He and Henry Tibbitts were empowered to take care that & certain highway in Kings Town, be forthwith laid open for use and benefit of inhabitants.


1691. Feb. 9. He makes complaint that Edward Dyer and Eli-ba Dyer bis brother, both non-residents, lid contrary to all law upon the third of this instant, February, center and take possession of my farm at Aquidueset, &c., and in a most flagrant mauner put themselves in possession of my cellar (my house of fate being burned by casualty), and that in forcing open myt door, it being at that time locked and the key in my pocket, and that not- withstanding my prohibition which they take no notice of : and do there- fore by these presents protest against the said Edward and Elisha Dyer, for all damages that may accrue thereby. He further protested and warned them that they would have to answer for it when the law should take! place.


In his family bible he recor led the death of his father Samuel (1681, Apr. 25), his brother John (1092. Apr .- 42 years), his mother 11701. Apr. 24- "aged four score year- the time Queen was crowned ") and his brother Samuel (1703, Jul. 1 :- 42 years, " drowned at ye New River a dishnog "). He also gives the date of his own birth in London, and his marriage and births of his childieu.

Nov. 20, at €4. per annum, and all hereafter found due which should have been for my yearly support and maintenance.


She was buried in Newport, where the gravestone may still be seen.


. 1736. May 15. A deposition was made by Elisha Dyer, of North Kingstown, that when he was in London, the widow of Samuel Vernon, desired him to bring her husband's legacy of a gold ring to his brother Daniel Vernon, but i he refused it by reason he was not coming directly to New England and she sent it by John Scott to the sunt Daniel Vergon and he received it according to this deponent's knowledge.


1736, May 23. Deposition of Daniel Updike, of Newport, aged about 42 years, who swith that about the year 1715, one Daniel Vernon died at the de- ponent's father's house in North Kingstown after having lived for many years preceding sud tim : at said piace as a Tutor to the deponeat's and to his father's other children, &e. He further testifies that Daniel Vernon showed him a seal ring, being a cornehan stone cut with three wheat sueaves, the armas borne by the fumiy of Vernou, which was (as he said) his said, brother Samuel's. Also testifies that a French bible be bim produced; printed at Rochelle 1616, was the bible of the sail Daniel Veruon, and that i the handwriting on the bac's side of a leaf in said bible (giving an account ! of Daniel Vernon's father, &.), way handwriting of sand Daniel Vernon. He also testified that he knew Samaet Veruon, of Newport, to be luwfal son and leir of Daniel, &c.


At same date Katharine Uplike testitiod that Daniel Updike died at her father's house in 1715, &c.


These depositions were in ule in or ler that Samuel Vernon, of Newport, son of Daniel, deceased, might get title to warehouse property in London on the Thames, &c., which had been injured by dre, and which he possessed himself of on the death of his father and his father's sister, by going to London, where be disjumed of the estate.

He was appointed by the Assembly with two others as a committee to treat with the proprietors of the Great Purchase (granted out of the vacant lands in Narragansett), and consider of some way and means whereby the differences relating to the gore of land in controversy may be settled. The committee were subsequently voted £9, for their time and trouble in the affair.


The same year he and the Governor were appointed a committee to have care and oversight of the . people and goods that should be suspected to have come from Boston, where the small pox prevailed.'

1747. He was a member of Redwood Library at time of its being chartered.


1758. At about this time he had eight of his resseis captured.


1771 He was appointed by the A -- embly on a committee to prepare a letter to bis Majesty's Secretary of State, in regard to a bill then pending in the House of Commons, affecting the listing interests of Rhode Island merchants in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, &c. He strongly espoused the cause of the Americans in the Revolutionary period, and advanced sums to the government.


1777. May G. He was cheted by Congress one of the Continental Navy Board, and was President of that bound during its existence.


1778. Okt. #1. In a letter of this date written to Josiah Hewes, be estimates his losses at £12,000 sterling besides bis real estate at Newport. Never- theless be expresel himself as content " il we wablish our rights and privileges upon a firm and lasting basis," &c. He was one of the founders of the Newport Bank.
