On the! same date he was one of those appointed by the ! Court of Commissioners to keep a house of | entertainment. A convenient sign was to be set out at the most perspicuous place of said house to give notice to strangers.

1650, Aug. 23. He having complained concern-i ing the remainder of $7. 10%. that an Indian , named Quiasuckquoanch owed him. being £5. i 10z., the court warned said Indian that if be do it not the court will take a speedy course to force bim to do right, which will prove trouble- some and chargable.
Perhaps Benjamin Griffin, who was one of those who bad 5.000 acres granted (1677, Oct. 31), to be called East Greenwich, was a son of Robert. This Benjamin was resident at Newport in 1677.

The two cows to remain in possession of son Thomas Paine till my grandson Thomas Mecarty is of age, at which time the latter to have a cow. To daughter Mercy Westcott, a feather bed. To grandsons Paulsgrave and John Williams, Joseph Mecarly, and Robert Sands, all rest of estate.
The will was exhibited by Edward Pelham and Anna Bennett, nearest of kin.

1715, Jul. 4. Israel Harding of Newport, calling himself son of John, deceased, sold land in Provi- dence to James Brown, of Providence. In another deed in same year Israel soll land in Providence to Jabez Brown, which had been owned by said Israel's honored grandfather Stephen Harding, deceased.
There was a John Hardin, who was the third pastor of Second Baptist Church at Newport. His wife was Sarah Butcher, and his children's names were: Mary, Elizabeth, Amey, Hannah and Israel. He died in 1200, and might be considered identical with the above John, but for the fact that Morgan Edwards ( who gives the foregoing account), declares that he came from Kent, in old England, by way of Boston to Newport.

1697. Ratable estate 112 acres pasture, 315 acres tilled land, 5 acres mowing, 4 cows, heifer, 4 small swine.
1694, Dec 18. Inventory was presented by widow Deborah, who desired administration, but having no bondsman, referred to next meeting, &c.
1696, Mar. 3. The widow having lately changed ber condition by marriage with Moses Bartlett, administration was given to her and her now husband on former husband's estate, till next meeting, they to give account and bond.
1608, Apr. 12. Administration on his estate was finally given to Moses Bartlett and wife Deborab, and the children committed to their care.
1711, Jan. 13. Moses Bartlett deeded land to son-in-law (i. e. stepson) John Harding. (The next year John sold land to his brother Stephen.)

1680, Apr. 2. Newport. In a letter from Samuel Hubbard (1691, May 14), of Newport, to Isaac Wells in Jamaica, Le says : " A ship came from Virginia, bither 2d day of April, 1690, twenty- six souls, five of them baptized, brother ffargel. a smith, and his wife. brother Henry Key and bis wife, Hope Covey."
1682, Jan. 29. Mr. Hubbard, in a letter of this date to Jobin Thornton, of Providence, about the troubles in the church from some who cime from Virginia, and also about singing of psalms in public, &c., says: " Brother Christopher Hargili was chief in it, but I think we may see| God's hand in it, his declining is made manitest. for he is fallen into his old sin of drunkenness," &c The church it seems sent for him but he care not and was refused fellowship till he manifested repentance.
1687, Dec. 14. He and Samuci Stapleton were asked in court why they kept not their shops shut on the first day of this instant December, it being a day set apart by his excellency the ! Governor and Council for thanksgiving and praise. His answer was that his boy opened the shop, and what work his son did was on his owa account, and that he was laine or else he did not know but tunt hunself might have wrought

He and wife Bridget deeded to son Abraham, all homestead estate, not hereto- fore given, including house, &e., and at their death be to have entire possession, and " to take a special care to sre after the estate of his father and mother that they fall not into any strait or wants, but will lawfully and faithfully! provide for them such things as they cannot! provide for themselves, as may be for their comfort and support in their old age, and as ! persons of their rank and quality, both in sick- ness and in health," &c.
1693, Jan. 15. Ile deeded to son Abraham, 8 acres, specifying that he had not time to sign it in the lifetime of bis son, but yet now docs so.

1644. He had a grant of 4 acres.
1650, May 23. He and five others were appointed to make and mend all arms presented by inbab- itants of any of the towns.
1662, Dec. 2. Ile leased for seven years, to son John, bis dwelling house, with all lands belong- ing thereto, at £5 yearly, payable Mar. 20. in wheat, pease, Indian coru or oats.
