1700, May 4. He was allowed 910, for his dishnursements and charges in pursuance of his intended voyage for England as agent of the Colony, the Assembly having decided to keep but one agent there, viz : Jouleel Brenton, who was already there.


1702, May 6. He and John Holmes, were empowered by Assembly to lease and settle the ferries in this Colony, that are not by law already setiled.


1702, Sep. 17. He was appointed on a committee to draw up an address to her Majesty, relating to the militia, &c., a demand having been made on Rhode Island, by Colonel Dudley, Governor of Massachusetts, for the whole militia of Rhode Island,


1703. Feb. 2. He was appointed sole agent to Engiand, to appear for the upholdling and continuing the Letters Patent, granted us by his Majesty Charles II. as well as for any other differences. He was to bare for the first year all neerwary expenses, charges for passage, &c., and for his reasonable accommodation unul his arrival in England. For his own noe, besides the aforesaid charges, be was to have £100. and 560 per annum, each year thereafter. If he should be taken in going or coming from England, the charge and cost of bis redemption was to be pant by the colony.


1703, Apr. The Assembly finding no occasion for the present to send an agent to England, the mutter was referred to the meeting in May.


1703, May 13. He and other commissioners signed an agreement with the Connecticut commissioners for the settlement of boundaries between the two Colonies. (The question had caused in the words of the Assembly "a long, tedious and extensive debate.")

1732, May. In the case of Jaunes Shetfield, shipwright, against Samuel Sheffield, mariner, a para- graph from the will of Nathaniel Sheffield was brought in as evidence. To son Samuel, he gave conditionally a lot of land in Newport, with house. &c., and half of 1.000 acres in Narragansett, A gun with my name cograved on it, a carbine and sword, all on condition that he pay my wife 26. yearly for life if she demand it, and UND, to my daughter Sarah Fitch, and 960 to grandaughter Ruth Goukd, daughter of Daniel Goukl and Ruth, his wife. Samuel was also to pay Paul Richarda, of New York, £124, before 1731. Nov. 30. said sum being due from said son Samuel, the testator being jointly bound to pay it.


The deposition of Paul Richards, declared that Samuci Sheffield, now of New York, told him that he had sold his brother James, that part of land that his father bequeathed him.


The executors of Nathaniel Shetfield's will were his widow Catharine and son James.


He and his two wives and children Ruth, James and Mary, were buried in the Clinton Burial Ground.

1710, Aug. 14. Licensed to keep public house.


1712, Aug. 2. In a deposition at this date he calls himself aged forty years or thereabouts.


1735, Apr. 4. He and wife Rachel sold Anthony Sprague, of Smithfield, 80 acres in Scituate, for £800.


1753, Apr. 12. He dieeded son Abraham, as a gift, 60 rods of salt meadow, situated at landing place cove in the lands of Pawtuset.


1754, Jan. 14. He deeded son Philip, mansion house farm, &c., where I now dwell, the son having three days before signed an obligation "to keep and maintain my ancient father Nehemiah Sheldon as a dutiful son ought to do by a father during the term of his natural life." (Both papers were recorded 1754, Feb. 22.)


It is assumed that Mary Sheldon (who married 1721. Dec. 18, William Rhodes), Rachel Sheldon (who married 1728, Mar. 6, Fernot Packer), and Welthian Sheldon (who married, 1731, Jun. 6, John Wil- liams), must have been daughters of Nehemiah Sheldon.

1641, Dec. 7. He and William Brown complained against James Lasford in an action of trespass. They attached four goals and a lamb in thej bands of Samuel Eddy and Joshua Pratt, | amounting to 33s., and several other sums in| other persons' hands


1666, Dec. 10. Portsmouth. He deeded Thomas Hazard a quarter of a share in Misquamicut and also paid him 920, receiving in exchange therefor 30 acres in Portsmouth, and house, orchard, &c., all to belong to Thomas Hazard for life, and at decrase of Thomas Hazard to be for Thomas Sheriff and wife Martha for their lives, and at death of both of them to go to el son John Sheriff and heirs, and for want of issue of John to go to 31 son Caleb Sheriff, &c. 1675, Jun. 11. Inventory, 52th, 12x., viz : house and laud £15, a hors: and mare 27, 2 cows, 3 calves, Jewes, 5 lambe, & shoats, a feather bed. 6 pillows, 2 bolsters, 6 blankets, ring, flock bed, 56 pounds pewter, warming pan, silver drum cup, looking glass, &c.


Her 2d husband, Thomas Hazard made a decla- ration (just after her first husband's death Hif). May 23) : " This is to satisfy all men, whom it may anyway concern, whereis there is a promis of matrimony betwist Thomas Hazard and Martha Sheriff, yet I the forsaid Thomas Hav ard ! do lake the said Martha Sheriff for her own per- son. without having anything to do with her catate or with anything that is here," &e.
