1637. Jun. G. He was presented by the Grand! Jury for shooting a wolf dog of Colonel En- dicutt's in the yard of the latter, and was Gned [ £5, for the offence, but saberquently the line) was remitted. The name of " Swerte Core" was given to an inlet near his residence.


1637. Providence, This year be had s grant of land here, and after his death his widow received a grant. She returned to Salein and had a grant this same year of land; in that place also.


After the marriage of Mrs. Sweet to Ezekiel Hoftimen, he changed the name of her daughter Meribah to Renewed, and the daughter inarricd under this latter name.


1639. Jul. 1. His widow, now the wife of | Exckiel Holliman, is allowed to in a letter of this date from Rev. Hugu Peters, unt Salem, to the church at Dorchester.


He says that she and certain others had " the great censure passed upon them in this our church," and that " they wholly refused to bear the church, denying it and all the churches in the Bay to be true churches," &c.

1677 Will-made at Newport. He named his wife Elizabeth, and children, John, Daniel, James, Henry, Richard, Benjamin, William, Jeremiah, and a daughter.


1634. Sep. IN. Elizabeth Wilson, widow, aged forty-five years or thereabouts, deposed that her first husband John Sweet, being a Warwick man, first fault his dwelling house on Potowomit Neck and procured leave of the Narragansett Sachems to set down his unil and dam in Potowumut River. Her husband and herself kept possession praceably of said house and land and mill for several years antil forced off by the late Indian war, and after the war was over she and her children returned and kept possession of summe place.

1686, Nov. 8. Kings Town. He decded to eldest son Philip, of Prudence Island. all right of lands in Providence "as my father John Sweet. deceased, was one of the first purchasers thereof."


1686, Nov. 8. He and now wife Mary, deeded to son Benoni, certain land in Mashantatack, at death of said James and wife. On the same date be deeded to son James, of Prudence Island, and Valentine of Kings Town, land in Mashantatack. He deeded aiso to his son Samuel and daughter Mary Sweet, " both remaining with me."

1663 The Assembly granted him a divorce from his wife Ann.


1665. Jul. 24. An ante-nuptial agreement was made between him and Joan Brhers, of Taunton. He agreed to give her land he had bought of Richard Morris, Daniel Wilcox and William! Wilbur, and also a house, all to be hets and her heirs born of this marriage. He gave her beside a bed and half the household goods, but | if she die without issue the estate given her was to revert to Peter Tallman's chest son, viz:| Peter, Jr., and if the latter die without i-suel then to Peter Tallman Senior's eldest daughter, ! viz : Mary and her heirs. To Joan, absolutely | as a " free gift of donation " he gave three good cows aud a good breeding mare.


1674, Jun. 7. Having broken a law of M.Lssa- chusetts prohibiting the receipt of land from Indians by deeds of gift, he was imprisoned, i but on giving up the deeds he was at this date released.


1575, Oct. 20. He brought suit against Rebecca ! 'Sadler, wife of Thomas. for breach of peace and threatening his family.

1683, Sep. 18. He was on a jury at Portsmouth, in the case of a ruan found dead and banging by the bead by a neckcloth fastened to the bougu of a cherry tree. Verdict : "That we do Dot find but that the said than sail to be named John Crags, was absolutely the only actor of his own death."
