A letter was laid before the board from Col. Bayard to Mr. An- drew Hodge, dated at Trenton, 2 o'Clock yesterday afternoon, in- forming that General Howe was advancing at the Head of his Army towards Head Quarters at Princetown.


Whereupon Commodore Seymour was sent for and directed to order all the armed Boats to be dispatched to Trenton Immediately, to assist in removing the Stores & any other service that may be required.


Adjourned of 9 o'Clock, when the following members met :

An order was drawn on Mr. Nesbitt, in favour of Lieut't Hen- derson & Boyd, for Ten Thousand Dollars, for recruiting service for 12 Penn'a Regiment, to be charged to Colonel Wm. Cook. -

An order was drawn on Mr. Nesbitt in favour of Lieut. Wm. Moore of the 2nd Pen'a Reg't in Continental Service, to be charg'd to Col. DeHaas, for recruiting service.


Resolved, That an order be given to John Bray, or any other Constable, to impress a Close Carriage with Horses from James Pemberton, John Pemberton, Israel Pemberton, or Sam'l Emlen, jun'r, to remove General Roberdeau to Lancaster.


Mr. Nesbitt to pay John Litle for 273 lbs. of nails, £27 6 0, for the use of the Salt works on 'Tom's River.


Mr. Robert Towers was directed to send 3 or 4 Tons of Powder to the Committee of Lancaster, to be stored there.


Resolved, That the regulations lately adopted by this Council concerning Salt be no longer continued, and that all persons shall be at Liberty to import that Article, and sell it in such manner and such prices as they shall find voluntary Purchasers.

Resolved, That Six Honest and discreet men be appointed by this board to examine into the causes of the Commitment of Messrs. William Smith, Joseph Stansburry, and others, and if upon such examination it shall appear to them that they have been guilty of any practices tending to alienate the minds of the people from the present Government of this State, or any thing treasonable against the same, to certify such practices and things, and confirm the Com- mitments of the said Persons, or any of them, until discharged by this Council, or some other authority under the same, but if upon such examination, there shall not appear reasonable cause of Com- mitment of such persons to discharge them, or any of them, from their Confinement, on making and subscribing a decleration of Fi- delity and Allegiance to this State. In the mean time Mr. Robert Jewell is directed and authorized to keep Messrs. Wm. Smith, Joseph Stransburry, & others, in Custody untill so discharged.


The Council being informed by General Washington that he had given notice to the several Colonels of Bucks County Militia with- but delay to March their men to Head Quarters, and as it appears to this board, that the measures taken by the General is essentially necessary at this Critical time ; it is therefore

Mr. John Redman was directed to pay Samuel Miller £1240 7 7, being for wages & Rations of a Company of Foot, taken, Commanded by Van Swearengin, into pay of this State, by the late Assembly, from February to 11 August last, in the County of Westmoreland, for the defence of said County against the depre- dations threatned by the Indians.


As it is of great Consequence to the people to be informed of the situation of Public affairs, and there is no Press now in the City capable of giving such intelligence ; therefore


Resolved, That Mr. Dunlap's press and types be employed for that purpose, and as it is a time of more than usual Danger, this board will pay the value of them in case they should fall into the enemy's hands.


General Washington having applied to this board to give Major General Putnam all the Assistance in our Power toward throwing up Works of defence for this City, which are absolutely necessary, and as many of its Inhabitants have not taken up arms to defend it against the invasion with which it is now threatened, whose indis- pensable duty it is to Contribute in some way to the Common de- fence; therefore,


Resolved, That all able bodied men, inhabitants of this City and environs, do contribute their equal proportion of Labour, either by themselves or their Substitutes, towards raising the necessary works of defence ; the persons so employed to have the same pay and Rations as the Militia now in the field, and in case any person shall neglect or refuse to serve in his turn, the Commanding officer, or such person as he shall appoint for that purpose, is hereby authorized to Seize and make sale of the Goods and Chattels of the respective delin- quents, to the amount of such Sum as shall induce another person to perform the work in their Stead; And it is recommended to the General to call forth the inhabitants to this Service by regular rota- tion, in such manner as may most effectually promote the same.

Resolved, That the officers of Militia who can raise indiscrimi- nately, out of any Battalion or Battalions, a number of men to join General Washington's Army, are hereby fully authorized and em- powered so to do; and it is recommended to all the said Officers to use their best endeavours to forward this salutary business, agreeable' to the Resolves of the Honorable House of Assembly of yesterday, for which purpose they shall be paid all reasonable Expences.


Resolved, That Col. John Bull be empowered to employ a num- ber of Waggons to remove the Powder and other Military Stores from the New Powder Mills at French Creek and Norrington towards Lancaster, there to remain untill further orders, under the care of such persons as he shall appoint to Guard the same.

Resolved, That the Stores and Shops in this city be immediately opened by the owners, and goods sold as usual.


Messrs. Mease & Caldwell were requested to deliver to Capt. Wm. Potts Twenty-five Blankets, for the use of his men on board the armed Boat under his Command.


Mr. Redman was directed to pay Josiah Hewes £33 10 0, for 9 muskets delivered to Mr. Towers.


George Genter £8 5 0, for going Express, & attendance on with a Horse, to be charged to Congress.


Capt. John Jacobs £100, to bear expences of his Company in Guarding State Prisoners to Baltimore.


Geo. Genter £8 5 0, for riding Express & attendance, &ca., to be charged to Congress.


An order was drawn on Mr. Redman in fav'r of Jacob Lush for £50, to be charged to his acco't.


An order was drawn on Mr. Redman in fav'r of Doct'r Robt. Harris for £100, to be charged to his acco't.


An order was drawn on Mr. Redman in favour of Col. Evan Evans for 1000 Dollars, to pay his Battalion of Militia a month's wages advance, to be charged to his acco't.


Resolved, That Capt. John Redman, Paymaster, do proceed Im- mediately to the Quarters of the Pennsylvania Regiment now un- der the Command of Major Enion Williams, and pay off so much of what is due to the officers & men of said Regiment as the said Major shall think proper.


Resolved, That Doct'r Thomas Young be appointed to assist Doct'r Potts in taking care of sick soldiers of the army, for which he shall have the rank and pay of Senior Surgeon in the Conti- nental Hospital.
