THE PLANTING OF A NEW ENGLAND TOWN

it was purchased in 1639. Hunsley Hill was named for Hunsley in Rowley Parish, England.

Such in brief is the record of the planting of a New England town of the early days. There is something fine and substantial in this plant- ing. The building of homes in the wilderness, the setting up of town government, the founding of the public school, the organization of a church

"unforced, uncalled to brook ritual restraints,"

all point to a desire for an intelligent, upright, law-abiding com- munity.

Whatever New England is today, or ever may be, one thing is certain, we owe more to the Puritan who laid the foundation and built so much of English law and liberty into the superstructure, than to all other forces combined.

The answer to any criticism of the Puritan is New England.

Early Settlers of Rowley, Massachusetts

ABBOTT ABBOT

1. GEORGE1 ABBOTT had a two-acre house lot registered in the first survey, 1643. No record of his death nor that of his wife is found. He died after 30: 1 mo. 1647, and before 30 Aug., 1647. 30: 1 mo. (Mar.) 1647, the Court gives consent to the town of Rowley to put forth Thomas Abbott, Jr., "sone of George Abott of Rowley," to be an apprentice to John Boynton. Case to be referred to next court, in order that the boy's father have opportunity to object (Essex, 'Ips. Ct. R.).

The inventory of his estate, taken 30 Aug., 1647, mentions thirty books; total estate £95-2s-8d (Essex Deeds, 1 Ips .: 61). Administra- tion granted 28: 7 mo. 1647, to Mark Symonds of Ipswich. His will was referred to Salem Court, 11 Nov., 1647, by the General Court. The Salem Quarterly Court Record of 28: 10 mo. 1647 mentions the nun- cupative will of George Abbott of Rowley sent from General Court. Ordered that it shall stand, and after paying legacies to the children, the remainder shall remain in the hands of Marke Simons of Ipswich, according to the will, to be disposed of to the children, who are to choose their guardians. Humphrey Reyner and Thomas Mighill were chosen, 28: 1 mo. 1648, guardians of George Abbot, Nehemiah Abbot, and Thomas Abbot, Jr., children of George Abbot, late of Rowley, de- ceased; the overplus is to be left in the hands of Marke Symonds, executor of George Abbot (Essex, Ips. Ct. R.).

In a deed to Daniel Harris, dated 25: 6 mo. 1652, Nehemiah Abbott describes the land conveyed as "given to me by the last will and testa- ment of my father, George Abbott" (Essex Deeds, 2 Ips .: 165, 309). 28 Mar., 1654, Mr. Reyner presented Nehemiah Abbott and Thomas Abbott, Jr., who acknowledged that they had received satisfaction from Mr. Humphrey Reyner and Thomas Mighill, guardians to the children of George Abbott, for their portions; Thomas Abbott, Sr., and Nehe- miah Abbott testified that their brother, George Abbott, has satisfac- tion also. The guardians were discharged (Essex, Ips. Ct. R.).

Value of estate, £234-15s. In a paper on file with the will, entitled "The Debts of Thomas Abatt," the last item is as follows :- "It to Thomas Abot brother to the deceased ...... 5-0-0" (Essex Probate). His widow, Dorothy, m. (2) Edward Chapman of Ipswich, who d. 18 Apr., 1678, and (3) 13 Nov., 1678, Archelaus

ACY ACIE

2. WILLIAM1 ACY came from Eppleworth, near Hull, England (Lea) ; had a two-acre house lot bounded on the north side and east end by the street, 1643; freeman, 31: 1 mo. 1646. He brought with him his wife, Margaret, whose maiden name was Haiton. They were married at Kirk Ella, England, 25 Mar., 1620 (Lea). She was buried 12 Feb., 1674-5. He held many town offices. The date of his death is not recorded. He was about 90 years old, 1682 (Ct. Files).

His will, dated 22 Apr., 1689, proved 30 Sept., 1690, mentions him- self as "very aged"; grandchildren John Brown, Nathaniel Brown and Ebenezer Brown; "grandchild Beriah Brown's daughter, Sarah Brown"; son John Acy's three daughters, Elizabeth, Hannah and Margaret ; grandson John Brown, with whom he is at present, sole executor (Essex Ct. Files, 49 : 93).

Savage says he had a son Joseph baptized in Boston, 1657. We find no mention of Joseph in Rowley Records, and William was an officer of Rowley that year.

Children brought with them to Rowley :

2-1. RUTH,2 bp. at Kirk Ella, 14 Mar., 1621 (Lea) ; m. John Palmer (135).

H., 5 June, 1676, Hannah, daughter of Henry Green of Hampton (Registry of Deeds, Exeter, N. H.). She was dismissed, Sept., 1677, from the church in Hampton to the church in Rowley (Ch. R.).

* Some doubt has been expressed as to Thomas Abbott (1-4) being the son of George Abbott (1) solely because George Abbott (1) appears to have two sons named Thomas alive at the same time. Hon. Samuel Symonds of Ipswich (1637), Deputy-Governor of Massachusetts, "a gentleman of Ancient family" had two sons named Samuel living at the same time. Samuel Symonds, Jr., of Ipswich, in his will dated 22 Nov., 1653, proved 28 Mar., 1654, mentions among other brothers, "I give unto my brother Samuell Symonds 20s." and in another item "I give unto my brother Samuel all my bookes" (Essex Deeds, 1 Ips .: 162). This brother, Samuel Symonds, was graduated at Harvard College, 1663, and died 1669, un- married.
