SAWYER
165. THOMAS SAWYER had an acre and half house lot in the second division, about 1645. He moved to Lancaster, 1647, and was one of the first settlers there. He died 12 Sept., 1706, "about the 90 year of his age" (G. S. Lancaster). It is probable that he was a brother of Edward Sawyer (164).
SCALES
166. WILLIAM1 SCALES, freeman 13 May, 1640, had an acre and half house lot on Wethersfield Street, 1643. He had a wife, Ann, 1662, who was buried 26 Sept., 1682 (Ct. R.). He was buried 10 July, 1682. No probate nor deed of his estate found.

167. JOHN1 SCALES, probably brother of William (166), married Susannah, widow of John Jarratt (99). He was buried 12 Jan., 1683- 4. His will, dated 9 Jan., 1683-4, mentions daughter Susannah, wife of son-in-law Benjamin Scott, and their children, John, Joseph and Sarah Scott (Essex Probate, 304: 37). His widow, Susannah, was buried 13 June, 1683.

SCOTT
168. BENJAMIN1 SCOTT, with wife Margaret* (Stevenson), was in Rowley, 1651. Savage says he was first of Braintree, then of Cam- bridge. He had no land laid out to him until 11 May, 1664, when "it was granted and voated that Benjamin Scot should have what land could conveniently be spared betweene Edward Hasens and the end of Mrs. Rogers land leaveing sufficient way to the clay pits" (Rowley R. Book 1, p. 169).
His will, dated 6 June, 1671, proved 26 Sept., 1671, mentions wife (unnamed) ; son Benjamin; son John; daughter Mary Scott (Essex Probate File, 24955).
His widow, Margaret, was executed in Salem, 22 Sept., 1692, as guilty of "certain detestable arts called Witchcraft and Sorceries," and was the only one so executed from Rowley.

By deed, dated 31 Mar., 1759, for £321-6s-8d, he conveyed to Eliot Payson a parcel of land in Rowley, containing ten acres, with dwelling-house, barn, and other buildings thereon; bounded east by the brook, south and west by the highway, north in part by said Payson's land and in part by the Parish land (Essex Deeds, 97: 12). This was his homestead, and comprised the lots registered in 1643 to Mr. Edward Carlton (35) and Mr. Henry Sandys (163). He moved to Lancaster with his son-in-law, Aaron Dresser, and died there, 16 Nov., 1760 (G. S. Lancaster).

His estate was divided as follows: widow Anna Scott, one third; eldest son, Joseph Scott, 2 shares; Ebenezer Scott, Johanna Scott and Sarah Scott, 1 share each (Essex Probate, 305 : 42). His widow, Anna, married (2) Richard Syle (194).
By deed, dated 28 June, 1709, "Ebenezer Scot of Boston in the Coun- ty of Suffolk, Turner, Mr Richard Syle and Anna, his wife; Charles Allen, fisherman and Joanna his wife, of Ipswich in the County of Essex and Sarah Scott of Rowley, Spinster, in said County of Essex and all within the Province of Mass. Bay . . . whereas Joseph Scott of Rowley aforesaid, Taylor, deceased, died intestate and was at his death possest of a dwelling-house and barn situate in said town of Rowley which said Anna, his Relict, now wife of said Richard hath her thirds in . . * William1 Searle of Ipswich appears to have moved from Boston to Ipswich about 1663; he then had wife, Grace.
William Searle of Boston, "Joyner," by deed, dated 19 May, 1663, buys for &26, of Shoreborn Wilson of Ipswich, a dwelling-house in Ipswich "I bought of Robert Dutch" (Essex Deeds, 3 Ips .: 133).
He died in Ipswich, 16 Aug., 1667 (Ct. R.). His nuncupative will was proved in Court at Ipswich, 24 Sept., 1667, whereby his wife (unnamed) was to have his estate. 23 Feb., 1723, William Searl of Rowley gave bond as administrator de bonis non of the estate "of his grandfather, William Searles, late of Ipswich dec'd" (Essex Probate).

orah, daughter of Edward Bragg of Ipswich, where she was born 22 Dec., 1658. She was admitted to Rowley Church, 23 June, 1695, as "Widdow Zearl" (Ch. R.). He moved to Rowley before 1690 and died in Rowley, 7 Apr., 1691, as shown by the inventory of his estate, returned 3: 9 mo. 1691, by Deborah Searle, the administratrix.
Edward Bragg, of Ipswich, made his will 26 Apr., 1705, in which he says, "having given my daughter Deborah Searl's children, my lands & bldgs. in the town of Rowley to be equally divided among such of them as shall live to the age of 21, I hereby confirm to them sª land wch I bo't of John Todd, late of Rowley, dec'd. the said Deborah hav- ing deceased since I conveyed sd land" (Essex Probate, 310: 78). Widow Deborah died in Rowley, 25 Mar., 1703. See Ephraim Nelson (130-25).

170-3. JOHN3 SEARLE (Samuel 170; William of Ipswich), born in Ipswich, 2 Nov., 1686; married 25 Nov., 1708, Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph Chaplin (37-2). She died 1 Mar., 1756 (Byfield Ch. R.). He married (2) in Bradford, 1 June, 1756, Bethiah Danforth of Brad- ford. She died 16 July, 1768, aged about 75 years (Byfield Ch. R.). He died 20 June, 1771, by a fall from his horse (Byfield Ch. R.).
His will, dated 25 July, 1768, mentions sons Samuel, Joseph, and William; daughters Elizabeth Little, Mary Brown, and Deborah Adams (Essex Probate, 347 : 232).

By deed, dated 30 Mar., 1732, John Harris and Grace, his wife, of Ipswich; William Searl and Jane, his wife; John Searl and Elizabeth, his wife; Ephraim Nelson and Mary, his wife, all of Rowley, for £16, sell Thomas Butler of Ipswich, a woodlot in Chebacco, Ipswich (Essex Deeds, 67: 233).
His widow, Grace, married (2) in Ipswich, 26 Oct., 1668, Thomas Dennis, who was formerly of Portsmouth, N. H., but then of Ipswich. The name of Thomas Dennis appears on the Rowley tax-list of 1691. Grace Dennis, wife of Mr. Thomas Dennis, died 24 Oct., 1686, aged 50 years (G. S. Ipswich).

Adm. granted, 23 Apr., 1691, to John Harris of Ipswich, who petitions for "Ad- ministration upon ye Estate of William Scearlles of Rowley deceased there beeing noe other relation living to begg ye same" (Essex Probate). The inventory, taken 2: 9 mo. 1691, showing estate of £8-18s and date of death as above, was returned to the Court at Ipswich 3: 9 mo. 1691, by John Harris, admr. He was a soldier in the Canada Expedition, 1690, and d. in or by reason of said service. His sister, Grace Harris, received the amount due him from town of Rowley.

170-5. DEA. WILLIAM3 SEARLE (Samuel 170; William of Ipswich), born 8 Sept., 1690; married (int. 3 Aug., 1723) Jane, daughter of Jeremiah Nelson (130-12). She died 30 Mar., 1778. Administration granted, 3 Apr., 1783, to her eldest son, Jeremiah Searle (Essex Pro- bate, 356 : 111). Her real estate was granted to son Jeremiah Searle, he paying Jane Jewett, William Searle, David Searle, Eunice Gardner, Lois Cogswell and Jonathan Searle their portions (Essex Probate, 356 : 201). He was chosen deacon of the Second Church in Rowley, 1732. He died 18 May, 1778.

R.). He married (2) (int. 28 Oct., 1775) Martha, widow of Dr. Benjamin Willet. 13 Nov., 1775, he sold to his son Samuel, one half his lands in Rowley, including one-eighth part of a grist mill owned in common with "My brother Joseph Searl and Nathaniel Ten- ney." In this deed he mentions his father, John Searl, as now deceased, and Dea. William Searl (Essex Deeds, 134: 239). He died, 1790 (By- field Ch. R.). His widow, Martha, died - Oct., 1796 (Byfield Ch.
