Mr. Richard Bellingham, of Boston, caused much trouble by the suits he brought in order to obtain possession of William's estate. The fol- lowing deposition was part of the evidence submitted at the trial of these suits: "the deposition of Richard longhorne aged about forty five this deponant wittneseth that . . . Mr. Richard Bellingham and this deponant beeing discorseing to geyther about a young gentlman called as he supposeth Samson Eaton who was akine to Mr William Belling- ham now deceased the said Mr Richard seemed to be much afected in that the young Gentleman was disapoynted of his end in comeing ouer the said Mr Richard in ty mated to this deponant that he the said Mr Richard thought that if the aboue young Gentleman had come before the deceas of the said Mr William in all liklly hood he had obtained it. and he the fore said young man missing the tyme (Mr Richard add this in the discours) my brother gaue it to my son Samuel Bellingham and further deponant saith not." BELLINGHAM


15. SAMUEL2 BELLINGHAM, nephew of William (14), and son of Richard1 of Boston; Harvard College, 1642; was here with his wife, Lucy, a short time. He conveyed all his estate in Rowley to Joseph Jewett (101), by deed, dated 23 July, 1650 (Essex Deeds, 1 Ips. : 219).


BENNETT BENNET


16. DR. DAVID1 BENNETT. At a legal meeting held 21 Feb., 1672, the Town of Rowley granted him three acres of land to build upon. On this grant he built his house and it was his home through life. Of his

first wife we find no mention. From 1672, he was, so far as known, the only physician practicing in Rowley, until his son, William, was able to assist him. He married (2) 29 Apr., 1672, Mary, widow of John Cheney of Newbury. She was daughter of Francis Plumer of Newbury (Coffin), and was buried 27 Sept., 1682. He married (3) 14 Feb., 1682-3, Widow Rebecca Buller, who died 26 Mar., 1712. She was daughter of Roger Spencer of Saco (Savage). Her sister, Mary, was wife of Sir William Phips.


Dr. Bennett was in the Canada Expedition, 1690 (Mass. Archives, 37: 46). He died 4 Feb., 1718-9, aged 103 years (G. S.). His will, dated 21 Jan., 1717-8, mentions son, Spencer Bennet, to have all the land in the marsh-field; son, William Bennet, to have all the great swamp lot; daughter, Sarah Decker, 20s .; daughter, Elizabeth Scott, all movables and all the housing set on land of son-in-law, John Scott (Essex Probate, 312 : 492-3).

Division of his real estate ordered, 16 Apr., 1733; one third set off to Widow Jemima Bennet, alias Todd; two thirds settled on "David Bennet the eldest son," he paying "the rest of the children their proportion": David, the eldest, two shares; Rebecca, Mary, William, Spencer, Jeremiah, Moses, Phillip, Jemima, each one share.

19. JOHN1 BOND was in Rowley with his wife, Esther (Hester), 1661, when he gave a deed describing himself "of Rowley." In 1661, he purchased of the town, Nelson Island, for £20. The sale was on condition that no house be placed thereon. He married in Newbury, 15 Aug., 1649, Hester Blakely; moved to Haverhill, and died there, 3 Dec., 1674 (Hoyt). His will, dated 31 Oct., 1674, mentions himself as of Haverhill; wife Hester; son Joseph to be executor; daughters Mary, Abigail, and Hester who was then Chase (Essex Probate). His widow, Esther, married (2) in Haverhill, 5 May, 1675, John Williams of Haverhill.

BOYNTON


21. WILLIAM1 BOYNTON, "tailor," freeman 13 May, 1640; had an acre and half house lot on Bradford Street, next to his brother John's lot, 1643. He was about 56 years old, 1662. He brought with him to Rowley his wife, Elizabeth.


By deed, dated 6 Jan., 1654, Dr. John Clarke, with his wife, Martha, of Boston, for £40 sterling, conveys to William Boynton of Rowley, planter, "all those pcells of vpland & meddowing lying in Newberry Towneship in New England aforesaid on the South Side of the said Newberry river in the neck of land Called woodbridg poynt containeing one hundred Acrees be it more or lesse & lying in two parts or pcells that is to say Tenn acres thereof more or lesse of marsh land lying betwixt the lands of Mr. Henry Shewell on the east side the lands of Mr. Richard Dumer on the south & west side & the falls or Newberry river on the north side And the rest of the said lands lying betwixt lands of the said Henry Shewell on the west & the said Newberry river on the North & east side & the lands of the said Richard Dumer on the south side together with all the woods underwoods trees timber standing growing lying & bein in & upon the said pmisses & all wayes waters water-courses easments mines Comons right of Comon commodities" &c. Possession was given and received, 25 Jan., 1654 (Essex Deeds, 1 Ips .: 206). This was unimproved land at eight shillings an acre. This land he conveyed to his son, Joshua, in 1673. The ninety acre parcel is divided into three farms, now (1932) owned by Buckley, Green, and Burns.


He was schoolmaster in Rowley for a long time and probably the first person regularly employed as such. At a legal meeting of the town of Rowley, held 3: 12 mo. 1656, it was agreed that William Boyn- ton should have five pounds lent him out of the church's stock towards the building of an end to his house, upon condition that if he keep the school seven years this five pounds is to be void but in case he leave the school before seven years be out the said house end is to be priced by two indifferent men and one-half of the price of the said house end so priced shall the said William Boynton return to the church again. At a legal meeting of the town of Rowley, held the 16 of Jan., 1673, it was agreed and voted that William Boynton should have two pounds twelve shillings for his service to the town in "Ringing the meetting hous bell and sweeping the meetting hous."


He died in Ipswich, 8 Dec., 1686. His widow, Elizabeth, died in Salisbury, 1687.

21-4. JOSHUA2 BOYNTON (William 21), "carpenter," born 10: 6 mo. 1646; married in Newbury, 9 Apr., 1678, Hannah Barnet or Bur- net .* She died in Newbury, 12 Jan., 1722-3. He married (2) 29 Nov., 1725, Mary, widow of Richard Syle (194), the schoolmaster. She died in Rowley, 28 July, 1727. He married (3) in Haverhill, 30 Oct., 1727, Mary, widow of John Boynton (22-2).


By deed, dated 7 Jan., 1673, his father conveys to him that land "I bought of Mr. John Clarke, that is lyeing and being in the Towneship of Newbury, in the neck of land sometimes called Steere Common, as it lyeth bounded, on the westerly end by land of Mr. Henry Sewalls, the southerly syde bounded by land of Mr. Richard Dumers from the South corner tree, that parts it and Mr Sewalls land and Mr Dummers, runing on a streight line easterly to a bound at the head of a creeke, and then that creeke being the bounds of it, vnto the River, on all parts elce bounded by the River." (Essex Deeds, 3 Ips. : 342).


On this farm he lived more than fifty years. He was of Rowley, 1725, of Bradford, 1729, and of Haverhill, 1733. In a deed to his son William, dated 10 Feb., 1728-9, he says he was a soldier under Major Appleton in the "warrs at Narragansett" (Essex Deeds, 92: 275). His will, dated 20 Dec., 1729, proved 12 Nov., 1736, mentions all the chil- dren as given below (Essex Probate, 320 : 315).

21-8. JOSHUA,3 b. 4 May, 1679; m. (int. 30 Apr., 1708) Mary Dole of Newbury ; she d. 26 Dec., 1777, aged 90 years. (Byfield Ch. R.). He lived on the above mentioned farm and d. there, 29 Oct., 1770 (G. S. Byfield). They had children born in Newbury.


21-9. JOHN, b. 15 July, 1683; "cooper." In 1743, he sold his farm in Newbury to Nathaniel Plummer, Jr. (Essex Deeds, 85: 66). He m. (int. 27 Nov., 1717) Jemima Woster of Bradford. They had seven children (Byfield Ch. R.).


21-10. ZACHARY, bp. 20 July, 1690 (Rowley Ch. R.) ; m. in Newbury, 15 Nov., 1715, Sarah Wicom (217-18). He was of "Coventry in the Co. of Windham, Colony of Conn.," 1733 (Essex Deeds, 65 : 253).

21-6. CALEB2 BOYNTON (William 21), "farmer," born 7: 2 mo. 1650; married in Newbury, 24 June, 1672, Mary Moores of Newbury. His home was in Ipswich, near the Rowley line, and he is styled "Ipswich Caleb Boynton" on Rowley Church Record. He joined Row- ley Church, 2 July, 1676, and died about 1695-6. He disposed of his real estate, by deeds to various persons, a few years before his death (Essex Deeds, 10: 85 and 11: 3).

He married (2) in Rowley, 11 Mar., 1719-20, Elizabeth Wood. He was captain in Col. Francis Wain- wright's First Regiment-Red-in service 1706 and 1707, Port Royal Expedition; town clerk, and representative many years. He and wife, Sarah, son Benoni and wife, Ann, were dismissed from Rowley Church to Groton, 4 Dec., 1715 (Ch. R.). He returned to Rowley before 1720, and died 16 Dec., 1730, aged 85 years (G. S.).

She was born in Newbury, 12 Sept., 1654, and died in Bradford, 1 Apr., 1717 (G. S. Bradford). He married (2) in Haverhill, 19 Feb., 1718- 9, Mary, widow of Simon Wainwright (205).


He sold to Andrew Stickney, 23 Oct., 1678, the homestead that was his father's, and moved to Bradford where he died 22 Dec., 1719. His will, made "under the infirmities of old age" 30 Oct., 1719, mentions wife Mary, and a marriage contract; eldest son, Ichabod; daughter Hannah Barnes; son Zechariah; grandchildren, oldest son of Ichabod (unnamed), and Joseph Barnes, son of daughter Hannah (Essex Pro- bate, 313 : 89).


His widow, Mary, married (4) Joshua Boynton (21-4).

22-18. ICHABOD,3 b. 19 Apr., 1677; m. in Bradford, 18 Feb., 1705-6, Eliza- beth Haseltine (83-27). He lived and died in Bradford, where the births of seven children are recorded. Her will, dated 1 Apr., 1758, proved 8 May. 1758, mentions son-in-law Samuel Sheppard; Abi- gail, wife of Ebenezer Middleton; Rachel, wife of Samuel Johnson (Essex Probate, 35 : 146).

In 1717, he sold his homestead to Samuel Todd (Essex Deeds, 38: 75), and was dismissed, 19 Nov., 1719, from Rowley Church to the church in Groton (Ch. R.).

His will, dated 22 Apr., 1752, mentions wife, Bridget; sons Nathan- iel, Benjamin, Abiel, Ephraim, and Zacheus; daughters Edna, wife of Samuel Brown, and Bridget, deceased, who married Jonathan Bailey, and left sons and daughters (Essex Probate, 333: 288). Before his decease he had disposed of all his real estate except one right in Cox- hall, County of York. His widow, Bridget, died 14 Oct., 1757.
