STEWARD STEWART STUART

Contributed by George S. Stewart, Newton Highlands, Mass.

188. DUNCAN1 STEWART came to Rowley from Newbury, not earlier than 1689, in which year his name first appears on Rowley Record. He married, early in 1654, Anne Winchurst, both then of Ipswich, and both in service of George Hadley (Essex Ct. Files, 2: 130). They moved to Newbury in 1659, and for thirty years occupied a farm on that part of the Dummer estate now a portion of the Caldwell farm in the Byfield Parish and near the Rowley line. His name is on the New- bury tax-list of Aug., 1688 (Reg. 32: 157) and in the Rowley list of 1691, when he was assessed £2.

By deed, dated 20 Feb., 1698-9, "Dunckin Steward of Rowley planter" sells Capt. Stephen Greenleaf of Newbury, the rate lot and right in undivided lands of Newbury belonging to "his son Charles Steward, late of Newbury, deceased" (Essex Deeds, 16: 17). He was among those "inhabitants of Rowley living northwest of Rye Plain bridge and Long Hill," 16 Mar., 1702-3, whose minister's rates were abated. James, John, Samuel, and Ebenezer Stewart signed an agreement, 17 Mar., 1713-4, for the maintenance of "their aged and honoured parents, Dun- can and Ann Stewart" who, since 1707, had resided with their son John Stewart (Suffolk Ct. Files, 19265).

Duncan Stewart died in Rowley, 30 Aug., 1717, "aged 'tis tho't abot 100 yrs" (Ch. R.). He deposed, in 1698, that he was about 75 years old (Suffolk Ct. Files). His widow, Ann, was admitted, 17 Sept., 1721, to Rowley Church, "tho't to be nearer a 100 y" 90 years" (Ch. R.). She died 9 July, 1729 (Ch. R.).

By deed, dated 16 Apr., 1718, James Stewart of Boxford, John Stewart of Rowley, Samuel Stewart of Wells, and Ebenezer Stewart of Rowley, "being ye only surviving brothers of Charles Stewart, late of Newbury, dec'd" confirm to Capt. Stephen Greenleaf the land and rights of said Charles, in Newbury, which "our Hond Father Dunkin Stewart, late of Rowley, dec'd was pleased in his lifetime to sell," &c. (Essex Deeds, 37: 230).

No evidence whatever has been found to show that Duncan Stewart or any of his sons ever engaged in shipbuilding or owned a shipyard as stated in Gage's History of Rowley, p. 318.
