93. JOSEPH1 HORSLEY is mentioned, 17 Feb., 1668, in connection with a lot of land in Rowlev, and later as "in ye war" (Rowley R.). He married 6 Apr., 1671, Mary, widow of Mighill Cressey (47) ; died 30 Mar., 1699. She died 7 May, 1707. See Mighill Cressey (47), note.
By deed, dated 11 Mar., 1669-70, Samuel Stickney conveyed to Joseph Horsley, "bachelor," of Rowley, for £40, one acre and one half of land with buildings, orchard and fruit trees thereon, bounded east on the street, south on land and household of Edward Hazen, west on a swamp of said Hazen, north on a house lot once belonging to John Trumble, deceased; said parcel was first laid out to Thomas Leaver but sold to said Stickney by William Acy (Essex Deeds, 4 Ips .: 450). This lot is the southerly portion of the homestead of the late George B. Blodgette.
By deed, dated 30 May, 1699, Mary Horsley, and Elizabeth Horsley, daughter of said Mary, both of Rowley, "being heirs to ye Estate of Joseph Horsley of Rowley, deceased sell to Michael (Mighill) Cressey son of said Mary & brother to said Elizabeth, all the housing & lands with all ye profits & priviledges thereunto belonging wch was Joseph Horsley's in Rowley." HOWARD
94. JOHN HOWARD was living in Rowley, 2 Nov., 1677, and was then in Daniel Wicom's tithing-man's district. Later he moved into George Kilbourne's district. At a town meeting, 19 June, 1684, he was chosen to "Ring the meeting house bell vpon Saboth dayes lecture dayes and other publick meting dayes and to sweep the meeting house and to Ring the nine of clocke bell at night," at a yearly pay of four pounds. His name appears on the Rowley tax-list of 1691.
HUNTER
95. ROBERT1 HUNTER, freeman 7 Oct., 1640, had a two-acre house lot, 1643. He brought with him his wife, Mary. He was buried 5: 6 mo. 1647.
His will, dated 5: 6 mo. 1647, mentions wife, Mary, to have life use of house and lands; remainder over to Abel Langley, if he shall "settle here & carry well towards his Dame"; otherwise for the use of the poor of Rowley. To Richard Clark, John Dresser, John Burbank, William Jackson, Jane Grant, Sisley Wood, Margaret Crosse, Thomas Elethorp, Edward Sawyer, Thomas Tenney, each ten shillings. To William Stickney, twenty shillings and "all my workiday clothes." To Mrs. Shove, forty shillings, "which I desire may be for helping her sonne when he is to goe to Cambridg." 96. WILLIAM2 HUTCHINS, son of John1 of Newbury, owned land, in 1670, on which he lived, in that part of Rowley called Merrimack Village, afterward Bradford (Rowley R. 1: 207). He is mentioned, 1671-2, as son-in-law, in the will of Thomas Hardy. He married in Haverhill, 1 July, 1661, Sarah, daughter of Thomas Hardy (76). She died in Bradford, 19 Sept., 1684.

JACKSON
97. WILLIAM1 JACKSON had an acre and half house lot on Brad- ford Street, 1643. He brought with him his wife, Joan, who was buried 20 Nov., 1680. 11 June, 1668, he, "husbandman" of Rowley, gives to his son, James How, Jr., land. in the "Village" (now Boxford) (Essex Deeds, 3 Ips.). He was buried 5 May, 1688. His deed of gift to his children, in effect a will, dated 6 Dec., 1680, mentions him- self as "being aged and decreped in body & haveing lately buryed his deare wife"; John Jackson, "my only son according to what I prom- ised when he matched with Brother Poore his daughter"; John, son of son John, "that child which he had by Elizabeth his late wife"; eldest daughter, Elizabeth ; daughter Mary Foster; "son John Trumble, and daughter Deborah, his wife" (Essex Deeds, 4 Ips. : 398).

He died 23 Feb. 1718-9; or it may have been his son who died at that time.

JEWETT
100. DEA. MAXIMILIAN1 JEWETT was the second son of Edward and Mary (Taylor) Jewett* of Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. He came to Rowley, Mass., with the Rev. Ezekiel Rogers, 1639 ; freeman, 13 May, 1640; had a two-acre house lot, 1643, on Brad- ford Street. He was a leading man in town affairs, and representa- tive in the General Court many times; was one of the first two deacons of the Rowley Church, ordained 3 Dec., 1639. He brought with him wife Ann, who was buried 9 Nov., 1667. He married (2) 30 Aug., 1671, Ellen, widow of John Boynton (22). He died 19 Oct., 1684.
* Edward Jewett of Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, clothier, married, in Bradford, 1 Oct., 1604, Mary, daughter of William Taylor. His will, dated 2 Feb., 1614, proved by his widow, 12 July, 1615, mentions wife, Mary, executrix; sons William, Maximilian, Joseph; daughter Sarah, and father-in-law William Taylor.

"Re- becca Jewet, wife of Ensign Joseph Jewet, who lay long in a sad dis- consolate condition, but was (we hope) lifted into joy, Decembr 27, 1729" (Ch. R.). He married (2) in Bradford, 20 Jan., 1731-2, Mary, widow of Nathaniel Gage (68-4). The record of his death, entered in Rowley Church Record by the Rev. Jedidiah Jewett (100-65), is as follows: "1735 My Grandfather Joseph Jewet, in the 81 year of his age, Oct. 29." The town record, made long after, has the year 1729. His home was in that part of Byfield Parish, Rowley, set off and incorporated as Georgetown, 1838. His death is not recorded in Rowley. Administra- tion granted, 1730, to his widow, Sarah (Essex Probate, 318: 39). His real estate was divided, 23 Mar., 1730-1; to Widow Sarah; eldest son, Seth; son Jeremiah, a minor; daughters Hannah Tenney, Eliza- beth Brown, Sarah Pickard, Faith, Hepsebah, a minor, Ann, a minor (Essex Probate, 319: 26).
His widow, Sarah, married (2) Capt. Samuel Pickard (145-6). Children born in Rowley :

He married (2) (int. 28 Sept., 1723) Sarah Trask of Beverly. She died 3 Dec., 1724, in her 49th year (G. S.). He married (3) 23 Nov., 1725, Widow Lydia (Thurston 199-1) Rogers. She died 7 Sept., 1754 (G. S.), 14 Sept., 1754 (Ch. R.).
He died 14 Jan., 1771 (G. S.). His will, dated 21 Nov., 1767, men- tions son Eliphalet to be executor and have the real estate; son David, deceased, "has had his share already, except twenty shillings, which I give to his six children" (unnamed) ; six children of son Eliphalet, Stephen, David, Priscilla, Phebe, Joanna, Sarah. "Item whereas I have heretofore given my daughter Phebe Cooper, decd., the full of her portion except fourteen pounds lawfull money which sum I give Priscilla Ross her only surviving child upon this condition viz. that she and her husband release remise and forever quit claim unto my said son Eliphalet Jewett his Heirs and assigns forever all such estate, Right, Title Interest or Demand that she now has or that may here- after accrue to her in or to any estate that was formerly Willm Laws late of sd Rowley decd by virtue of any Right my sd decd daughter had or ought to have in the said William's Estate or any part thereof" (Essex Probate, 346 : 511).

on Bradford Street. In Oct., 1733, he was assigned a share in "Narra- gansett No. One, on the right of his father Joseph Jewett." The record of his death, entered in the church record by the Rev. Jedidiah Jewett, is as follows: "1745 My Father Jonathan Jewet, July 26."
