38. SYMON2 CHAPMAN was a son of Edward1 and Mary (Sy- monds) Chapman of Ipswich, where he was born about 1643-4. He moved to Rowley and married 21 Mar., 1666, Mary, daughter of John and Mary Brewer of Ipswich. She died in Ipswich, 23 Feb., 1724. He removed to Ipswich about 1679, and died there 25 Aug., 1735.


In a deposition, Simon Chapman of Ipswich, aged 90 years, says that about 1679 he left Rowley, where he had for 10 years before lived in possession of the estate, formerly of Thomas Abbott, senior, home- stead of 2 acres, bounded easterly by highway, southerly by Henry Ryley, westerly on a brook, northerly by Rich. Longhorne. "I im- proved for the term of Ten years as above said under my mother-in- law who was formerly the wife of Thomas Abbott sen". of Rowley." Sworn to at Ipswich, 1 Apr., 1734 (Essex Deeds, 66: 281).

39. JAMES3 CHUTE was the only son of James2 of Ipswich, who was son of Lionel1 Chute who died in Ipswich, 1645, leaving a will, dated 4: 7 mo. 1644, proved 7 : 9 mo. 1645, wherein is mentioned wife, Rose, and son, James (Essex Deeds, 1 Ips. : 15).

He was born in Ipswich, about 1648; married in Ipswich, 10 Nov., 1673 (Ct. R.), Mary, oldest child of Thomas Wood (220) of Rowley. She, as "Mr. Jewts (Chute's) wife" (unnamed) was admitted to Row- ley Church, - Apr., 1695 (Ch. R.). Mary Chute was dismissed, 13 Oct., 1706, from Rowley Church to the church in Byfield Parish (Ch. R.).


He was administrator of his father's estate, 3: 9 mo. 1691 (Essex Probate, 304: 397). In a deed to John Wainwright, dated 20 Dec., 1692, he mentions his "late Father James Chute deceased, yt he is the only son, heir & administrator unto" and conveys his homestead in Ipswich to Wainwright (Essex Deeds, 5 Ips .: 551).


By deed, dated 18 Jan., 1692-3, his brother, Joseph Jewett of Row- ley, conveys to James Chewte of Ipswich, husbandman, 128 acres in Rowley, bounded on one side by the Newbury line, on the other side "by ye plane called Ry plane" (Essex Deeds, 30 : 176). He soon moved to Rowley making this land his homestead. By deed, dated 17 Jan., 1708-9, James Chute of Rowley conveys to son Lionel Chute, as his share or "portion of my estate or my fathers by any entail or aliena- tion whatsoever," about 30 acres of the farm "I bought of Capt. Joseph Jewett" (Essex Deeds, 28: 34).


By deed, dated 14 Feb., 1715-16, he conveys his homestead of 90 acres, bought of Joseph Jewett as above, to his son, James Chute, to enjoy one-half at once and the other half not "untill my death and the death of his mother" (Essex Deeds, 30: 168). In this deed he mentions "land which I sold to my son Andrew Stickney and . . . land I gave my son Lionell Chewte."


By deed, dated 12 June, 1729, James Chute, Sr., of Rowley, con- veys to his daughter, Elizabeth, wife of Henry Lunt, land in Rowley to hold for her life, then to her children which she had by "her late husband Andrew Stickne late of Rowley, deceased." Also mentions "my grandson Amos Stickney" (Essex Deeds, 43: 125).


No record of the death of James Chute nor of the death of his wife, Mary, is found.

JAMES4 CHUTE (James 39; James of Ipswich; Lionel of Ipswich), born in Ipswich, 13 June, 1686; married in Rowley, 26 Jan., 1715-6, Mary, daughter of Daniel and Mary (Dresser 58-7) Thurston (199) of Newbury. She died 12 Aug., 1760, aged 67 years. "She was a very useful woman as a midwife, & as she lived desired, so died much lamented" (Byfield Ch. R.). He married (2) 30 Mar., 1761, Sarah (Hale), widow of Joseph Pearson (140-16). She died 9 May, 1762, aged 69 years.


Her will, dated 4 May, 1762, mentions husband; son-in-law Daniel Chute (Chewte) and daughter-in-law Ruth Searle; son-in-law Capt. John Pearson; niece Hannah Little; cousins John Frazer and Jesse Frazer, sons of John Frazer; granddaughter-in-law Judith Chute; son- in-law Capt. John Pearson, residuary legatee and executor (Essex Pro- bate, 339: 9).


He married (3) (int. 30 Oct., 1762) Hannah Chase of Newbury. He was chosen deacon of the Byfield Church, 20 June, 1744, and died 31 Jan., 1769 (G. S. Byfield). His widow, Hannah, died 6 Dec., 1776, "nearly" 82 years (G. S. Byfield).

His will, dated 3 Sept., 1793, mentions wife, Hannah; son James to have the farm in Rowley near Byfield meeting-house, "that was given by my Hond Father, deceased"; son David; son Daniel; daugh- ters Mary Colman and Hannah Parish; granddaughters Susanna Col- man and Judith Thurston; sons James and David, executors (Essex Probate, 372 : 365). His widow, Hannah, died 28 Apr., 1812, in the 90th year of her age (G. S. Byfield).

He resided in Boxford from 1781 until about 1791, then removed to Rowley where he was chosen deacon of the Byfield Church, 7 Mar., 1795. He died 28 Apr., 1825, in Madison, Indiana (Chute Gen.).

His will, dated 29 Aug., 1836, mentions himself as of Rowley; wife, Ruth : daughter Sophia Chute to have property in trust to support son Daniel Chute; daughter Sally Poor to have her portion free from control of her husband; daughters Judith Clark and Hannah Peabody; son-in- law James Peabody, executor (Essex Probate, 412: 353). His widow, Ruth, died in Georgetown, 15 Feb., 1847.

41. RICHARD CLARKE married - 6 mo. 1643, Alice -; the second couple married in Rowley. We find no record of their deaths. He bought the house lot of Thomas Elithorp (63), on Bradford Street. His will, dated 7 Feb., 1673-4, proved 31 Mar., 1674, mentions only son, John, and daughter Esther Hopkinson, and that he has but small estate (Essex Probate).
