WILLIAM1 STICKNEY and his wife, Elizabeth, were admitted to the First Church in Boston, 6: 11 mo. 1638, and dismissed, 24: 9 mo. 1639, "to ye gathering of a Church at Rowley if the Lord so please" (Boston First Ch. R.); freeman 7: 8 mo. 1640. He had an acre and half house lot on Wethersfield Street, 1643. He was buried 25 Jan., 1664-5. His will, dated 21 Jan., 1664, mentions himself as of Rowley ; wife, Elizabeth ; sons Samuel, Amos, John, Andrew, Thomas ; daughters Mary, Faith, and Mercy; wife, Elizabeth, executrix (Essex Probate). His widow, Elizabeth, was living 24 Sept., 1678 (Essex Deeds, 4: 228). The date of her death is not recorded. A granite monument to his memory was erected in Rowley Cemetery in 1865 by some of his descendants.

His widow, Prudence, died 26 Oct., 1716 (G. S. Bradford). Her will, dated 30 Aug., 1716, mentions son, John Gage, of Bradford; son Jona- than Stickney, as lately deceased ( Essex Probate, 311 : 452). BENJAMIN, b. 4 Apr., 1673; moved to Rowley before 1694, and lived with Daniel Tenney (195-6) on Long Hill Road, Byfield Parish. From 1699 to 1726 he purchased, of various owners, land at Long Hill, Byfield, and built a house on top of the hill in 1700. This was his home throughout the remainder of his life and his eleven children were born here, nearly all of whom married into Rowley families. He m. in Rowley, 16 Jan., 1700-1, Mary Palmer (134-5) ; she d. 1747, aged 74; bur. in Byfield. He m. (2) 2 Oct., 1750, Widow Mary Morrison; d. 5 Mar., 1756; bur. in Byfield. His widow, Mary, m. 15 Nov., 1757, Samuel Duty of Rowley.


His son Samuel,4 b. 4 Apr., 1708; m. Mary Brocklebank (29-28) ; m. (2) 6 June, 1733, Faith Platts (147-16). He built, in 1733, a cloth mill, and soon after, a sawmill, on the site of what has in later years been known as Dummer's sawmill. In 1735, he built a house near the mill, which was his home during the remainder of his life. He d. 4 Apr., 1778. See Stickney Gene- alogy.

192-1. THOMAS2 SUMNER (George 192), had an acre and half house lot on Bradford Street, registered 1643. He brought with him his wife, Abigail. He died without issue, before 31: 8 mo. 1643, when the "goods of Abigail, the late wife of Thomas Sumner, deceased," were appraised (Suffolk Probate). His widow, Abigail, married (2) Thomas Elithorp (63).


"Petition of Robert Coates Sr of Lynn and Jane Coates his wife and daughter of George Sumner who died by Small Pox some forty years since in Rowley, for administration of estate of Thomas Sumner her brother who married and died without issue, his wife is also dead she having married twice, and said Jane is only heir living, she being about ten years old when her father died. To the Court to be held 1st Tues-

SWAN


193. RICHARD1 SWAN, "husbandman," was admitted to the First Church in Boston, 6: 11 mo. 1638; dismissed to "ye gathering of a Church at Rowley, 24: 9 mo. 1639"; freeman 13 May, 1640. He had a two-acre house lot, 1643; brought with him wife Ann, who was buried 4 Apr., 1658. He married (2) 1 Mar., 1658-9, Ann, widow of John Trumble (204).


He was buried 14 May, 1678. His will, dated 25 Apr., 1678, men- tions wife, Ann; son Robert Swan; "Joseph Boynton my son-in-law and Sarah his wife"; "three children of my son-in-law and daughter Stickney"; "grandchild Richard Sutton"; "grandchild Richard Swan, son of my son Robert"; "my four dau's," Jane Wilson, Frances Quilter, Dorothy Chapman, and Mercy Warner (Essex Probate on file and Essex Deeds, 4 Ips. : 173-5).


His widow, Ann, was buried 23 July, 1678. Her will, dated 4 July, 1678, proved 24 Sept., 1678, mentions daughters Abigail Bailey and Mary Kilborn; sons Caleb, John and Jonathan Hopkinson and John Trumble. See Michael Hopkinson (91) and John Trumble (204).

193-1. ROBERT2 SWAN (Richard 193), born about 1626, probably in England; married Elizabeth, daughter of William Acy (2); was very early of Haverhill. He was a member of Rowley Church, until 9 May, 1675; residence, Haverhill, where his wife, Elizabeth, died 11 Aug., 1689 (G. S. Haverhill). He married (2) in Haverhill, 1 Apr., 1690, Widow Hannah Ross. He died 11 Feb., 1697-8 (Haverhill R.), in the 74th year of his age (G. S. Haverhill).


His will, dated 28 Sept., 1697, mentions wife, Hannah, and others. His real estate was divided, 21 Jan., 1724-5, into eleven equal shares (Essex Probate Files, 26896).

He was admitted to Rowley Church, 23 May, 1684. He was a soldier in the Canada Expedition, 1690, and died in service. Administration granted, 22 Apr., 1691, to his widow, Hannah (Essex Probate, 304: 375). His widow, Hannah, married (2) Thomas Jewett (100-11).

194. RICHARD1 SYLE was the schoolmaster in Rowley from about 1697 to the time of his death. He married (2) in Newbury, 31 Aug., 1697, Anna, widow of Joseph Scott (169). She died 25 Jan., 1715, in her 58th year (G. S.). He married (3) 28 Oct., 1719, Mary,* widow of Robert Greenough (72). He died 22 Feb., 1721-2. His will, dated 26 Mar., 1720, mentions wife, Mary; daughter Mary Benning- ton; daughter Elizabeth Feathergel; Margaret Joans; son John, who

His will, dated 9 Oct., 1725, mentions himself as of Newbury and a blockmaker; wife, Jane, to have all the estate during life; daughter Hannah to have remainder; trusty friend and brother-in-law, Richard Dole of Rowley, to be executor (Essex Probate). His widow, Jane, married (2) Tim- othy Palmer (134-20).

TENNEY


195. THOMAS1 TENNEY, brother of Dea. William (196), had an acre and half house lot, 1643. He brought with him his wife, Ann, who was mentioned as "sister" in the will of Dea. Thomas Mighill (127). She was buried 26: 7 mo. 1657. He married (2) 24 Feb., 1657-8, Elizabeth, widow of Francis Parrat (136). He was styled "ensign," and died in Bradford, 20 Feb., 1699-1700. In his deposition of 4 May, 1680, he gave his age as "about sixty-six years" (Essex Deeds, 4 Ips. : 329).
