148-5. JAMES2 PLATTS (Samuel 148), born 11: 4 mo. 1661; mar- ried 10 Sept., 1691, Lydia, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Hutchin- son) Hale of Newbury. She was born in Newbury, 17 Apr., 1666, and died 25 Oct., 1740. In his deed, dated 15 Sept., 1737, he describes himself as an "oat meal maker" (Essex Deeds, 73: 276). He died 26 Aug., 1742 (Ch. R.). Administration granted 13 Sept., 1742 (Essex Probate, 323: 100). His homestead was the homestead of his father, on the southerly side of Main Street, nearly opposite the southerly end of Pleasant Street. His son Samuel (148-13) succeeded to the owner- ship of said homestead, leaving its use to his wife, Mary, with power to sell for support. She sold it by parcels to Moses Bradstreet (25-61) (Essex Deeds, 128: 231), who repaired the house about 1775. It remained in the ownership of Mr. Bradstreet's descendants until 1906, and is now (1932) after several transfers, owned by the Rowley His- torical Society. See Publications of the Rowley Hist. Soc., No. 2, for historical sketch of the house.

149. BENJAMIN3 PLUMMER, son of Joseph2 and grandson of Fran- cis1, both of Newbury, was born 23 Oct., 1656; moved to Rowley ; mar- ried 15 Jan., 1678-9, Ann, daughter of Thomas Wood (220). The Rowley record of marriages has this, "Mary" Wood, but in the birth record of every child below, the mother's name is either Ann, Anne, or Anna. She joined Rowley Church 8 June, 1690; he joined 2 Apr., 1693 ; both were dismissed, 13 Oct., 1706, "In ordr to their Imbodying in chh. order . . . at Rowlbery alias Byfield" (Rowley Ch. R.).


He married (2) 13 Sept., 1715, Elizabeth Felt. He died 8 July, 1724 (G. S. Byfield). His will, dated 17 Dec., 1722, mentions wife, Elizabeth ; sons Benjamin, Thomas and Nathan, "ye reason I confer no more upon him (Nathan) is because he has been a bad Husband, and Stuborn & Rebellious"; daughters Ann Wheeler, Mary Cheney and Martha Harriman; grandchild Elizabeth Plummer, daughter of son John, deceased, a minor; "other three grandchildren," daughters of daughter Sarah Brocklebank, deceased, Sarah, Mary and Martha (Essex Probate, 315: 119). Caleb Boynton, aged about 45 years, gave similar testimony (Essex Deeds, 13: 155).

PRIME


153. MARK1 PRIME was an early settler but not of the first com- pany, probably 1644. He brought with him his wife, Ann. She was buried 6 Sept., 1672. He was employed many years about "The Mills," later Glen Mills, under the owner, Mr. Thomas Nelson (130), and the lessee, John Pearson (140). He was buried 21 Dec., 1683. The house lot laid out for him, about 1645, was on the south side of William Acy's lot. His will, without date, proved 15 Apr., 1684, mentions son Samuel to have life use of all the estate; wife (unnamed) of son Sam-

In the settlement of his estate, 1697, mention is made of his children as follows :-- Samuel, 21 years old; Sarah, over 18 years; Mark, over 16 years; Ann, over 13 years; also of their deceased mother's thirds from her second husband, and her youngest child, Jonathan Bradstreet (Essex Probate, 22749). Widow Sarah Prime married (2) Capt. Moses Bradstreet (25-7).

His widow, Sarah, married (2) 7 Oct., 1718, Robert Rogers* of Rowley, as his second wife. Two children were born of this marriage: Joseph, bp. 17 Jan., 1719-20, and Jane, bp. 15 Oct., 1721. She died 20 Nov., 1722 (Essex Probate, 313: 584 and 321: 37). By deed, dated 25 Dec., 1741, Joshua Prime of Rowley, Josiah White with Sarah, his wife, of Wenham, and Churchill Knowlton, with Jane, his wife, of Wen- ham, for £27, convey to Joshua Jewett of Rowley "three fourths of a Cowright in East End Ox pasture in Rowley, which Right Descended to our Honoured mother Sarah Prime late of sd Rowley, Deceased as part of her portion in her Father Capt. Joseph Jewett Estate" (Essex Deeds, 89: 103).

* Robert Rogers of Rowley, a trooper in service at Dunstable, was wounded 3 July, 1706, by a "spear run into my breast"; treated at Billerica to the 15th of the month, thence to Rowley (Province Laws, 8: 797). He was son of John and Diana (Chiske) Rogers of Ipswich; born there 20 Feb., 1682 (Ct. R.); a sadler; died in Rowley, 18 Apr., 1723. See Daniel Thurston (199-1).

153-5. MARK3 PRIME (Samuel 153-1; Mark 153), baptized 13 Mar., 1680-1; married 10 Feb., 1702-3, Jane, daughter of Thomas Lambert (112-6). By deed, dated 4 Feb., 1700-1, he buys of James Tenney (195-5), a dwelling-house and about six acres of land in Rowley, bounded east by the street, northeasterly in part by Thomas Leaver's land and in part by land of "ye Swans," westerly by Joseph Kilbourne's land, southerly in part by land of the Acies and in part by land of the Hazens and others (Essex Deeds, 32: 5). This purchase included the original lots laid out to Thomas Tenney (195) and Robert Haseltine (83). He made this dwelling-house his home and died there, 7 Oct., 1722, in his 42nd year (G. S.). His widow, Jane, was living 27 June, 1729 (Essex Deeds, 56: 97).


He opened a store* on the Thomas Tenney (195) lot in 1707, which has been in operation by his descendants until the present time (1932).

He married (2) 31 May, 1750 (18 June, 1752 dup.), Bridget, daughter of Nathaniel Ham- mond (75-6). They moved to Sutton, about 1770. He died in Sutton, 26 July, 1770. His widow, Bridget, was dismissed, 26 May, 1771, from Rowley Church to the church in Sutton (Ch. R.). She married (2) 29 Dec., 1772, Nathaniel Carriel, Jr., of Sutton.

On the petition stating that Samuel Prime of Rowley, "having some estate fell to him by the late death of his Father and he being unable either to take care of himself or his estate," William Todd of Rowley was appointed, 26 Feb., 1771, his guardian. The inventory shows "Personal estate as settled in the Probate Office in the County of Worcester, as eldest son 2 shares £12-10-53 and 18 acres of Woodland lying in Sutton in the County of Worcester £37-6-0." The account of the guardian shows payment to "Bridget Prime, for Journey from Sutton to Worcester to advertise." (Essex Probate File, 22757.) He died 22 July, 1800, "at Dudley Lulls."
