He was a soldier* of the Revolution, serving in the same company with James Jewett (101-144) and Jacob Pickard (145-96) in Col. Nathaniel Wade's Regiment at West Point at the time of Arnold's treason, and was one of those who rowed Arnold to the British man- of-war, "Vulture."

141. JOHN3 PERLEY, son of Samuel2 and Ruth (Trumble 204-4) Perley), of Ipswich, and grandson of Allen1 of the same, was born 28 Sept., 1669; married 13 July, 1698, Jane, daughter of Lieut. John Dresser (58-1). They lived in Ipswich, where their children were born.

142. SAMUEL3 PERLEY, son of Samuel2 and Ruth (Trumble 204-4) Perley of Ipswich, and grandson of Allen1 of the same, was born 28 May, 1667; married 28 Mar., 1694, Abigail, daughter of Isaac Cum- mings of Topsfield.


He moved to Rowley about the time of his marriage. His homestead was very near the boundary line between Rowley and Boxford. She died 2 Jan., 1725-6. He died 24 Oct., 1746.

1667, Lydia Horsley* probably sister of Joseph Horsley (93). They joined Rowley Church, 23 Feb., 1675, "Tho Pearly" and his wife (un- named) were dismissed, 27 Dec., 1702, to the church in Boxford.


It is probable that he had a second wife, Lydia (Peabody) Howlet, widow of Thomas Howlet, Jr. By deed, dated 8 Jan., 1677, Thomas Pearly and his wife Lydia, both of Rowley, sell to William Peabody of Topsfield, land in Boxford, part of the Dr. Crosby farm, "according to the agreement, which my father Pabody and my Brother John Pearly and myselfe did agree should be my share" (Essex Deeds, 4 Ips. : 157). A deed dated 8 Jan., 1677, shows that Thomas Perley of Rowley with wife, Lydia, was brother to John Perley of Newbury, with wife, Marah (Mary) (Essex Deeds, 4 Ips .: 156).

PHILLIPS


144. REV. SAMUEL2 PHILLIPS, son of the Rev. George1 of Water- town, was born in England, 1625, at Boxted in Essex (Savage) ; Har- vard College, 1650; ordained, June 1651, colleague with the Rev. Eze- kiel Rogers, as second minister of Rowley; married - Oct., 1651 (Gage) Sarah, daughter of Samuel Appletont of Ipswich. He died 22 Apr., 1696. His widow, Sarah, died 15 July, 1714. (Monument).


His will, dated 30 Mar., 1696, mentions, among others, wife, Sarah, who has life use of most of the estate; eldest son, Samuel, a double portion ; son George ; grandsons Samuel, son of son Samuel, and Elipha- let, son of daughter Payson; sons of Capt. William Bond to have two- thirds of the lot of land in Watertown "my uncle Howard gave me" (Essex Probate, 305-166).


The estate was finally settled 22 Jan., 1717-8; the parties then in interest were: Samuel Phillips and his wife, Sarah; George Phillips; Edward Payson and his wife, Elizabeth; John Bartlett and his wife, Dorcas; Samuel Payson and his wife, Mary; Thomas Kimball and his wife, Elizabeth; Mary Greenough; Nathaniell Mighill and his wife, Priscilla; Jonathan Woodman and his wife, Sarah (Essex Probate, 312 : 247). The last seven were representatives of Sarah Phillips, the oldest daughter, who died 10 Feb., 1706-7. The many distinguished men in Massachusetts, who have for generations made the name of Phillips illustrious, are his descendants.
