* The "History and Genealogy of the Perley Family," by M. V. B. Perley, 1906, has Thomas Perley, son of Allen of Ipswich, married 8 July, 1667, to Lydia Peabody, daughter of Lieut. Francis Peabody of Topsfield. The original Rowley record is as follows: "anno 1667 Thomas Pearley & Lidiah Horsley married July ye eight day." Thomas Howlet, Jr., ** the first husband of Lydia Peabody did not die until Dec., 1667. The settlement of his estate and the will of his father, Ensign Thomas Howlet, dated 1 Nov., 1677, show that he was survived by his widow, Lydia, and his two daughters: Mary, who married Thomas Hazen (85-4), and Alice, who married Isaac Cummings.

EARLY SETTLERS OF ROWLEY, MASSACHUSETTS
Mr. Phillips' ecclesiasticism led him into conflict with the civil law, as shown by the Essex County Court Record of Apr., 1679-"Whereas a complaint hath been preferred to this Court by Ezekiel Northend and others subscribers to this complaint against Rev. Samuel Phillips for that the sª Phillips did in open congregation in Rowley the last Lords day rendered the sª and divers others as false witnesses in respect to some testimony they had given unto the Maj. Gen11 Denison, charging the said Mr Phillips with high reflection upon authority ; this Court having considered the complaint, evidence and answers made cannot but adjudge the sª Mr Phillips to have spoken concerning the said witnesses unadvisedly and very injuriously, to their great reproach and discouraging of witnesses in cases of like nature which ought not to be permitted, do therefore sentence the sd Mr Phillips for the sd offence to pay a fine of 5 pounds and the costs of complainants and witnesses and fees."
His homestead, which he purchased, 16 Mar., 1664, of Susannah Lume, was the lot laid out to Nicholas Jackson (98).
