65. WILLIAM2 FOSTER, son of Reginald1 of Ipswich, married 15: 3 mo. 1661, Mary, daughter of William Jackson (97). He was admitted to Rowley Church, 23 Feb., 1675, and dismissed, 27 Dec., 1702, to the church in Boxford (Ch. R.). His homestead was in that part of Rowley now Boxford. He died 17 May, 1713 (Boxford R.).


His will, dated 3 Sept., 1711, mentions himself as of Boxford and 78 years old ; five sons, Jonathan, William, Timothy, Samuel and David, to have land in Ipswich, "which I had of my father Foster"; wife (unnamed) and her son Joseph; daughters Mary Kilbourne, Judith Platts and Hannah Rix (Essex Probate).


By deed, dated 11 Feb., 1723-4, Jonathan Foster, Timothy Foster and Samuel Foster of Boxford, William Foster of Andover, David Fos- ter of Haverhill, Mary Kilburn and John Platts of Rowley, Theophilus Rix and Hannah Rix, his wife, of Wenham, all within the County of Essex, convey to John Perkins of Andover, about five acres of meadow in Andover and Salem (Essex Deeds, 43: 279).

until the Byfield Church was established, to which church he and his wife were dismissed, 10 Nov., 1706. He married in Newbury, 10 Nov., 1685, Anna, or Hannah, daughter of Duncan Stewart (188). She died before Dec., 1691 (Essex Deeds, 38: 65). He married (2) soon after 17 Dec., 1691, Ann, daughter of John Wicom (217-3). He died 26 Mar., 1715, aged 53 years (G. S. Byfield).


His contract of marriage with Ann Wicom is dated 17 Dec., 1691, and mentions that he "hath two children by his former wife," and that if these children trouble Ann he will put them out (Essex Deeds, 38: 65).

He died 21 Oct., 1741 (G. S.). His will, dated 5 Oct., 1741, men- tions wife, Jane; "My four children," Nathan, Solomon, Mark and Moses (Essex Probate, 324: 583). His widow, Jane, married (2) Doctor Eliphalet Kilbourne (106-19).

68. JOHN1 GAGE signed the covenant of the First Church, Boston, 27 Aug., 1630; was of Ipswich, 1633; was of Rowley before 7: 10 mo. 1661, when he was chosen one of the "overseers for pentuckit sid" (Rowley R., Vol. 1: 118). His home was in that part of Rowley now Bradford. He was about 50 years old, 1659 (Essex Ct. Files).


His wife, Amy, died in Ipswich,- June, 1658. He married (2) in Ipswich, 7 Nov., 1658, Sarah Keyes, widow of Robert Keyes of Water- town. He died in Bradford, 24 Mar., 1672-3. His will, mentions wife, Sarah; sons Samuel, Daniel, Nathaniel, Jonathan, and Josiah Gage; "my grandson to have an equal share with each of them" (Essex Probate).


"Sara Gage widow dyed July 7th 1681" (Newbury R.). The inven- tory of her estate was taken 14 July, 1681; endorsed thereon is the order of the Ipswich Court, Sept., 1681, for the division of her estate, "to the three daughters viz: the wifes of Wm. Smith, John French, & Samuell Buswell" (Essex Probate, 10506). See Samuel Buswell (33) and Stephen Pearson (140-12).

Elizabeth Gage; brothers Daniel Gage, Nathaniel Gage and Josiah Gage; Town of Bradford, 40 shillings, "to promote the in- terest of Christ" (Essex Deeds, 4 Ips .: '57). No male issue sur- vived him.

GAGE


69. LIEUT. THOMAS2 GAGE, son of Thomas1 and Hannah or Joanna (Knight) Gage of Yarmouth, and later of Harwich, was a blacksmith, and of Beverly, with wife, Sarah, in 1680. She died there 7 Dec., 1694, aged about 40 years. He, being then of Beverly, married (2) in Rowley, 11 June, 1695, Elizabeth, widow of Ezekiel Mighill (127-4). He resided in Rowley after 1695. Lieut. Thomas Gage died in the army "at Port Royal, - Aug. 1707" (Ch. R.), said to have been "killed by a great shot in his tent," 13 Aug., 1707.


His will, dated 21 Apr., 1707, mentions wife, Elizabeth; son Thomas to have the land at "Simondyes" which he now improves; son William to have the homestead and be executor; daughter Sarah; daughter Mary, wife of Nathaniel Jewett; daughter Joanna; daughter Susan- nah; daughter Elizabeth (Essex Probate, 309: 258). His widow, Elizabeth, died 14 July, 1737.


He petitioned the Essex Co. Ct., held at Ipswich 31 Mar., 1691, for administration, saying :--- "My brother Adam Gage went out a souldier for Cannada & there was slaine in their Maj: service & hath left a widow & not any child & neither house & land or any household good considerable, but hath severall debts" (Clerk of Courts Office, Salem, Mass.).

70. BENJAMIN2 GOODRIDGE, son of William1 of Watertown* (Sav- age), was born in Watertown, 11: 2 mo. 1642 (Bond) ; married in Newbury, 8 Sept., 1663, Mary (should be Deborah, Mary married John Kimball), daughter of Francis and Jane (Wilson) Jordan of Ipswich. Her mother, Jane Jordan, in her will, dated 10 Dec., 1689, mentions children of Deborah, late wife of Benjamin Goodridge, Benjamin, Joseph, Daniel and Josiah Goodridge (Essex Probate, 303: 140). She died in Newbury, 28 Nov., 1676. He married (2) in Newbury, 16 Nov., 1678, Sarah Croad.


"Oct. 23, 1692. In that part of Rowley which is now in Byfield Parish, in Georgetown, a Mr. Goodrich and wife, and two daughters, were killed by Indians. He was shot while praying in his family, on Sabbath evening. Another daughter named Deborah, aged seven years, was taken captive, but redeemed the next spring at the expense of the Province. She died in Beverly, as appears by the records of the first church in that town. The entry is as follows: Buryed, Mar. 28, 1774, Deborah Duty, aged 88 years, a widow. Mr Goodrich, his wife, and

His widow, Margaret, married (2) John Hull of Newbury, and moved to New- bury with her children, Joseph, Jeremiah, Benjamin and Mary (Bond). John Hull died in Newbury, 1 Feb., 1669-70, and his widow, Margaret, died there, 3 Feb., 1682-3.


Her will, dated 4 Aug., 1681, mentions "son Jeremiah Goodridge to have 40s; dau. Mary Woodman; grandchild, "Emry"; grandchild Elizabeth Woodman; son Joseph Goodridge to have 5s; grandchild Benjamin Goodridge to have "my new bedd & new boulster, two feather Pilloes & one paire Sheetes, ye one cotton & ye other flaxx, one yellow Rugg & a paire of new woollen blanketts, and a new peuter chamber pott, to be deliverred him after my decease when hee comes to ye age of one & twenty years"; son Benjamin Goodridge to have the rest, residue and remainder of the estate and be executor (Essex Probate).

two daughters, were buried in one grave a few rods easterly of the house. The house is now owned by Captain Gorham P. Tenney, and was the late residence of Mr. Dudley Lull, deceased, father of said Tenney's wife" (Gage's Hist. of Rowley, 1840). See Matthew Duty (61-5).


The house in which Goodridge was killed was destroyed by fire soon after the murder (Essex Deeds, 9: 43 and 144).


Administration granted, 6 Dec., 1692, to Francis Wainwright (Essex Probate Files, 11222). By deed, dated 25 May, 1733, Joseph Good- ridge, yeoman, Daniel Goodridge, weaver, both of Newbury, Josiah Goodridge of "Barwick," county of York, Maine, Samuel Goodridge of Boxford and Matthew Duty, convey two lots of land in Newbury, "laid out to the Rate rights of Benjamin Goodridge, Senr & Junr." . . "It is understood before Signing & sealing that ye within named Samuel Goodridge & Matthew Duty & Deborah his wife doth not here sell any right or title to ye sd land yt belonged to sd Benja Junrs part of sª lands" (Essex Deeds, 77: 103).


By deed, dated 23 Dec., 1730, Josiah Goodridge of Berwick, County of York, Maine, conveys to Joseph Goodridge of Newbury, his right in a five acre woodlot in Newbury, laid out to the right of "Our Father Benjamin Goodridge late of Newbury Decd my Right being one Just fifth part of sª Lott" (Essex Deeds, 68: 236).


By deed, dated 10 Dec., 1734, Daniel Goodridge of Newbury and Josiah Goodridge of "Barwick," county of York, Maine, convey to "our Brother Joseph Goodridge of Newbury" all right, title and in- terest in land in Newbury "lately Laid out to ye rate right of Our Brother Benja Goodridge late of Newbury aforesd Decd" (Essex Deeds, 69 : 281).

71-1. JOHN2 GRANT (Thomas and Jane 71), born in England; married Mary - He died without issue, 18 Mar., 1696-7. Admin- istration granted 15 Apr., 1697, to his widow, Mary Grant. The sure- ties on her bond were Samuel Hunt of Billerica, and John Todd of Rowley.


On file in the case are depositions of Samuel Platts, aged 48 years; Henry Riley, aged 69 years; Ebenezer Wood, aged 24 years; Susannah Todd, aged 60 years; Ann Wood, aged 60 years; all dated in 1697, and of Joseph Bailey of Bradford, who says "in Rowley where I was born and brought up," dated 20 July 1698; and that of Samuel Stick- ney which is as follows: "I Sam" Stickney Sr of Bradford do testifie & say That I came over from England to New-England in the same ship wth Thomas Grant & Jane Grant his Wife, who brought over wth them Foure Children, by name John, Hannah, Frances, & Ann, whome I was well acquainted wth, & next or near neighbours unto in Rowley. And ye said John being deceased, I do affirm that the Sis- ters of John Grant above named, now by marriage known by ye names of Hannah Browne, Frances Keyes, & Ann Emerson are ye same yt came over wth their Father & Mother, & by them owned wth said John for their children." Sworn to 20 July, 1698 (Essex Probate Files, 11510).


His widow, Mary, died 16 Feb., 1697-8. Her will, dated 2 Feb., 1697-8, mentions Sister Susannah Todd, wife of John Todd (203) ; Sister Wood, wife of Thomas Wood (220), "who is to have one feather bed that Jeremiah* lyes on"; cousin John Todd to be executor (Essex Probate, 306 : 108).

72. ROBERT1 GREENOUGH married Martha (Epes of Ipswich ?). He married (2) 6 Mar., 1687-8, Sarah, widow of Stephen Mighill (127-8). She died at Taunton, 10 Feb., 1706-7 (Ch. R.). He mar- ried (3) (int. 29 Apr., 1710) Mary Daniel (51). He died 30 Mar., 1718 (Ch. R.). His will, dated 28 Mar., 1718, mentions son Daniel ; son Robert's heirs; daughter Mary Greenough; beloved wife, Mary; and son John Greenough (Essex Probate, 312: 282). His widow, Mary, married (2) Richard Syle (194).
