73. GEORGE HADLEY, from Ipswich, settled in that part of Rowley now Bradford, 17 Dec., 1655. He bought of William Wilde (218), the grantor's house, barn and lands in Rowley, near Haverhill (Essex Deeds, 1 Ips .: 497). 9 Oct., 1660, he gives a mortgage of his farm in Rowley to Thomas Dickinson (54), "which I purchased of William Wiles of Ipswich" (Essex Deeds, 2 Ips .: 14). In 1665, he was of Row- ley (Essex Deeds, 2 Ips .: 451).
HALE
74. "GOODM. (THOMAS3) HALE, JUNIOR," son of Thomas2 and grandson of Thomas1, both of Newbury, was born in Newbury, 11 Feb., 1658-9; married there, 16 May, 1682, Sarah, daughter of Ezekiel Northend (132).
He moved to Rowley about 1727, and died there 11 Apr., 1730 (G. S.). His widow, Sarah, died in Rowley, 26 Apr., 1732, aged 70 years (G. S.). Thomas3 was the ancestor of the Hales of Rowley. Their eleven children were born in Newbury.

75. THOMAS3 HAMMOND (Thomas2 of Watertown, William1 of Watertown), was born in Watertown, 11 July, 1656 (Bond) ; married

21 Aug., 1677, Elizabeth Noyes (Bond). She died in Watertown, 4 Apr., 1679 (Bond). He married (2) 6 Dec., 1679 (Bond), Sarah, daughter of John Pickard (145). She died in Ipswich, 16 Jan., 1712- 3 (G. S. Rowley). He married (3) (int. 16 Oct., 1713) Hannah, widow of Samuel Lancaster and daughter of Ensign Abel Platts (148- 2). She died 26 June, 1748 (Ch. R.).
His residence was Watertown until about 1699, when he moved to his farm in Ipswich, "joining the bounds of Rowley," and annexed to Rowley, 1785. This farm was the farm of his grandfather, John Cross,* whose only child, Hannah, was the mother of Thomas Ham- mond, who was her only child.
By deed, dated 13 June, 1713, he, "for love and affection," conveys to his two sons David and Nathaniel, all that farm he "now liveth on in Ipswich, bounded on the cartway which lyeth next ye line that parts Ipswich and Rowley on the northwesterly side and by Bradstreet's farm on the northeasterly side; by land of Gershom Nelson in part upon the southwesterly side and in part by land of John Pickard's heirs on the southerly side." - "Reserving to said parent & his heirs and assigns forever ye improvement, benefit & useage of said way as laid out next Rowley Line from the way said parent purchased of Jeremiah Nelson from said farm to Rowley towne (now Hammond Street) until it come to ye Country road leading from Ipswich to Row- ley (now Main Street) that is to say sd parents now Dwelling house & barn," 100 acres more or less (Essex Deeds, 25: 243).
Soon after 1713 he moved to another farm in Ipswich, a short dis- tance southwesterly from the Cross farm described above and there lived until his death. This farm is now (1932) in possession of heirs of John F. Bradstreet, descendants of his daughter Hannah (75-8). See Nathaniel Bradstreet (25-55).
By deed, dated 8 June, 1724, he conveyed this homestead to his two daughters, Hannah and Mary, both minors, to hold during their lives, then to their eldest sons; his other two daughters, Sarah Lambert and Elizabeth Jewett, to be paid ten pounds each. In the deed the farm is described as follows: "southeasterly upon land of Doct. Samuel Wallis, Junr, Jeremiah Jewett and Moses Davis; on ye eastwardly end by land of Jonathan Pickard; and norardly and norwest by land of the said Jonathan & also Francis Pickards, norwest and westwardly by ye divisional line between Ipswich & Rowley" (Essex Deeds, 45: 29).
He died on his farm in Ipswich Village, 26 Feb., 1724-5 (Ch. R.) (G. S. Rowley). Hammond Street, Rowley, was named for him.
* The will of John Cross of Ipswich, dated 1 Nov., 1650, and codicil, dated 30: 9 mo. 1650, and codicil, dated 18: 10 mo. 1650. proved 26: 1 mo. 1651, mentions wife, Ann, and his friend, William English, to be executors; daughter Hannah to have the farm, and if she leave no issue the property to go to town of Ipswich to help maintain a free school (Essex Deeds, 1 Ips .: 112). The farm was then in the hands of Thomas Elithorpe (63).
This daughter, Hannah Cross, was b. in Ipswich, 7 Apr., 1636; m. about 1655, Thomas2 Hammond of Watertown. He d. in Watertown, 10 Dec., 1655 (Bond). She d. in Watertown, 24 Mar., 1656-7 (Bond). By her will, dated 19 Mar., 1656-7, she gave her mother (Anna) one half the rent of the Cross farm in Ipswich (Bond). Widow Anna Cross d. in Watertown, 13 Nov., 1669 (Pope).

"I Thomas Hammond of Dunbarton in the County of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, of lawful age, testify depose and say, that I was born in June 1747 at a place then called Ipswich farms, now in the town of Rowley; from this place my father removed, as I have understood to a place in Rowley about half a quarter of a mile distant, when I was about eighteen months old, at this latter place I remained with my father till I was nearly fifteen years old, excepting one summer, this place adjoins on the farm where Mr Moses Brad- street now lives. I served my apprenticeship in Newburyport, and resided there afterward till April 1775; when my family removed to my former residence, and I went into the army, and returned to my family in the spring of 1776. I remained at said place with my family about one month; thence we removed to the distance of about three quarters of a mile, where we remained till January, 1777; then we removed into the State of New Hampshire, where I have lived till the present time. 76. THOMAS1 HARDY* settled very early in that part of Rowley afterward called Merrimack Village and later Bradford, where he acquired much land. The name of his wife is not recorded.
He died in Bradford, 4 Jan., 1677-8. His will, dated 4 Mar., 1671-2, when he was called of "Merrimack near Haverhill," with a "Postscript" dated 12 Dec., 1677, proved 26 Mar., 1678, mentions himself as aged about 72 years, in 1677; eldest son, Thomas, sons John, Joseph, Jacob and William; son-in-law William Hutchins; daughter Mary and her children unnamed; daughter Sarah (Essex Probate).

78. LEONARD1 HARRIMAN was probably of the first company and then a minor. His name appears of record in Rowley before 1649. He bought, in 1667, of John Todd (203), the house lot laid out to John Spofford (184), on Bradford Street. His wife was Margaret; she was buried 22 Oct., 1676. He died 6 (?) May, 1691. His will, dated 12 May, 1691, mentions himself as being infirm; son Matthew to have land in Haverhill; son Jonathan; daughters Hannah Boynton and Mary Harriman; and grandson Matthew, son of Matthew (Essex Probate, 304: 385).

He was of Haverhill and aged about 70 years, 8 May, 1722, when he gave a deposition concerning the bounds of land in Haverhill (Essex Deeds, 39: 153). His will, dated 12 June, 1734, mentions wife, Margaret; sons Leonard, Nathaniel, John, Samuel, and Jeremiah who is to have real estate and take care of his mother; daughters Margaret Boynton, Mary Nelson and Sarah Hazen (Essex Probate, 325 : 34). Widow Margaret died 25 Jan., 1754, "very aged."
