SEWALL
171. HENRY1 SEWALL "was of Newbury, 1635, had lived, 1623, at Manchester, England, it is said, also that he was eldest son of Henry, Mayor of Coventry, and baptized 8 Apr., 1576 . . . he was dissatisfied with every body and thing, soon separated from his wife, Ellen, dis- turbed the church of Ipswich before he moved to Newbury" (Savage).
He married in Coventry, Anne Hunt (Diary of Samuel Sewall, Vol. 1, p. xvii).
He crossed the river to Rowley in 1646 and there resided through the remainder of his earthly pilgrimage. During the latter part of his life, he is said to have been occasionally a little deranged. This was prob- ably the cause of his being two or three times presented by the grand jury for various offences. The first instance was in December, 1650. The testimony was as follows :
"Mr. Showell was walking in the foremost seat in the meeting-house neare the pulpit and Mr. Rogers being present and ready to step into the place to begin prayer, said, Mr. Showell, cease your walking. Mr. S. answered, you should have come sooner, with more words to that pur- pose, but he not ceasing his walking, presently our pastor added these words, remember where you are, this is the house of God, to which Mr. S. answered with a lowd voyce I know how to behave in the house of God as well as you. Then our pastour said rather than that he disturb the congregation, putt him out, to which Mr. S. replyed, lett us see who dare. After this a brother spake unto Mr. Showell in a friendly way, but Mr. S. with a stearne countenance and threatning manner saide he would take a course with some of us and in many other words we do not now remember. Upon another Lord's day Mr. S. was walking, a part of the congregation being assembled. Mr. S. did exclaim thus with an audible voyce, looking up, good Lord, this day is spent I know not how, and nothing is yet done, expressing some trouble in other words" (Coffin's Hist. of Newbury, p. 61).
He died in Rowley and was buried the "first month 1656" (Rowley R.). The inventory of his estate, amounting to £339-17s-04d, taken by Joseph Jewett, Matthew Boyse and John Todd, was filed in court, 25 Mar., 1656. From him have descended, among others, three chief justices of our highest state court. His only child was Henry2 of New- bury.
