EXPLANATION.
In the following genealogies, numerals in parenthesis, after names, refer to the same numbers in Roman characters, denoting heads of families of the same surname, thus : Judith, dau. of Samuel Batchel- der (7) m. Nathan Blake (10) means-Judith, whose father was Sam- uel, of the seventh Batchelder family, married Nathan, father of the tenth Blake family, as here numbered. Birth, death and fact of mar- riage are given in the record of children of the several families. Date of marriage and particulars of home and life are carried forward to the record of the same children, as heads of families of the next gen- eration. The numbering refers backward as well as forward, and a little attention in the ontset, to the simple system employed, will enable the general reader to find the place of any person in the gene- alogies with perfect ease. The family indexes display the whole arrangement of the large families, each at a single view. The abbre- viations b., bp., m., unm., and d. denote respectively-born, bap- tized, married, unmarried and died. H., No. H., H. F., N. P., K., and Ki., denote respectively-Hampton, North Hampton, Hampton Falls, Newburyport, Kensington and Kingston.
If errors are found, let it be remembered that town and church rec- ords, family records and cemetery inscriptions often disagree, and perfect accuracy is then hard to obtain.

His eldest son, John, also dea- con, died 1754, aged seventy-nine years ; had four sons, of whom the eldest, John, captain, died 1793, aged eighty-nine years. He had five sons, of whom the third, Abiel, deacon, Esquire, married Dorcas Abbot, settled in Wilton and had ten children, of whom the second was Jacob, the Hampton Falls minister.

Mr. Abbot himself became a Unitarian. He was dismissed, Oct. 23, 1827, and removed to Wind- ham, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was drowned by the upsetting of his boat, Nov. 2, 1834, as he was returning from pub- lic worship across a pond between the meeting-house and his home. Children :

I. REV. STEPHEN BACHILER was the progenitor of all the Hampton families of this name, the first pastor of the church and minister of the town. He was born in England in 1561; came to this country, 1632 ; founded the town of Hampton in 1638, and built his first home here, where Mr. Isaac Emery now lives. He had then a second wife, named Helena. (It is thought that her last name was Mercer.) Mr. Bachiler had children, grown up and married long before he migrated to America. Of these, only one, Mrs. Hussey, is known to have come to Hampton. There came also, grandsons, the Sanborns (1) (2) (3) and Nathaniel Bachiler, or Batchelder, as he was accustomed to write his name, and as it is now commonly written. Mr. Bachiler's wife, Helena, died -- , and he married, third, probably about 1648, Mary
After a residence of more than twenty years in America, he returned to England, where he died at Hackney, in 1660, in the one hundredth year of his age. [See Chap. xix.]

HISTORY OF HAMPTON.
came to Hampton early in life ; married, first, Deborah, daughter of John Smith, of Martha's Vineyard, sister of John (2) [and niece of Ruth Dalton (1)?], Dec. 10, 1656. She died Mar. 8, 1676 ; married, second, Oct. 31, 1676, Mary Wyman, of Woburn, Mass., widow of John Wyman and daughter of Rev. Thomas Carter [and cousin of his first wife?]; third, Oct. 23, 1689, Elizabeth, widow of John Knill, who survived him. He died suddenly, Jan. 17, 1710, aged about eighty years.
The following anecdote is told of him : When, after the death of his first wife, he had determined to marry again, he resolved to be governed in his choice by the direction in which his staff, held per- pendicularly over the floor, should fall, when dropped from his hand. The experiment being tried, the staff fell towards the southwest, and in that direction he bent his steps. Having travelled as far as Wo- burn, he called on the widow Wyman, and offered her his hand, stat- ing that he was going to Boston, and would call for her answer, on his return.
Mr. Batchelder settled first on the house-lot now in possession of Joseph Snider ; but later in life, where Walter J. Palmer now lives. He was twice, at least, chosen constable; was one of the selectmen nine years. Children :
