In politics, he was a Republican, and was a leader in his party, shaping many of the nominations for public office in New Hampshire, and always refusing to be a candidate himself, although pressed to run for Congress several times.
He always took great interest in Hampton ; and during the later years of his life, in company with the late General Gilman Marston, would annually, on the Fourth of July, visit many of the older people of the town, relating reminiscences of boyhood life, the incidents of which, he always cherished with pleasure.

HISTORY OF HAMPTON.
MARSTON.
Among the early settlers, who received grants of land, were Robert and William Marston, whose relationship to each other, if any ex- isted, is not known.
ROBERT MARSTON's house-lot, seven acres more or less, bounded by Robert Page's on the west, and a common way on the east, abutting upon the Meeting-house Green toward the south and the common to- ward the north, was the same that is now owned by Jeremiah Marston. In 1641 Robert received three acres of meadow "neere the Boares head." June 30, 1643, another house-lot of five acres was granted to him, which seems to have been obtained for Simon Marston, who was probably his son. This was the present De Lancey place, separated from his former lot only by the "common way." Towards the close of that year, Robert Marston died. In 1644 William Moulton, who lived at Robert Page's (next lot west of Marston's) and married his daughter not far from this time, obtained "ten acres of upland in the North playne Bought of Rob : Masten haier-Symont Masten by name," and other land, including both the house-lots granted to Robert Mars- ton. As there is nothing more on record regarding Simon, it is likely that he went away or died. William Moulton settled on the easterly lot (De Lancey), and afterwards sold the other to Richard Knight, who had a gristmill at the Landing for a number of years, but event- ually removed to York, Me. Oct. 5, 1653, Knight sold it to Thomas · Marston, son of William Sen., and thence it descended in direct line, through Ephraim, Jeremiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Jeremiah, to the pres- ent Jeremiah.
