LAMPREY.

HENRY LAMPREY, born in England about 1616, came to America, with his wife, Julien, or Gillyen, as it is written in the Town Records ; lived several years in Boston, and about 1660 removed to Hampton. He is said to have been a cooper, by trade. He died Aug. 7, 1700, aged eighty-four years, according to a deposition in 1666, in which he calls himself fifty years old. His wife died May 10, 1670.

A pretty story (of the truth of which there is little doubt) has been handed down from generation to generation, that this little wife received for her marriage dowry a scale, containing her weight (one hundred twelve pounds) in gold. The chest which held the treas- ure is still preserved, being now owned by the children of the late Morris Lamprey, Esq., of St. Paul, Minn.

I. HENRY LAMPREY and his wife, Gillyen, had children :

Henry, b. ab. 1641; m. July 24, 1686, Elizabeth Mitchell; lived in Stratham ; was a signer of a petition from the inhabitants to the Gov. and Council in 1709, asking to be incorporated as a town. Perhaps this is the Henry who was of Exeter, in 1666. The H. Records give the birth of but one ch .: Mary, b. Aug., 1692.

Daniel. There is a tradition that he never married, but remained on the homestead and had for a housekeeper "a kinswoman," to whom he gave the easterly half of his house-lot, which she afterwards sold to (John?) Knowles. But it is found that Daniel Lamprey was allowed from the treas- ury of the province, in 1711, "his debenter, for money paid Roger Swaine, for entertaining his son, being sick in the [military] service, fifteen shil- lings," and from an account, in 1710, it appears that the name of the son was Benjamin. (Prov. Pap., III : 422, 469.)

For the same reason he buried some of his money, much of which was in silver dol- lars. Some money, thus concealed, was found after his death.

MRS. RUTH (LAMPREY) CADLE.

Though the family of Samuel Lamprey went to Orford before the

birth of the youngest child, Ruth, yet Hampton cannot afford to re- linquish her claim on one whose life was so fruitful in grand results.

While she was a member of Union Academy, in Canaan, Governor Lowe, of Iowa, wrote Governor Slade, of New Hampshire, who was president of "The Society for the Promotion of Education at the West," to send a teacher to Bloomington (now Muscatine), Iowa. Furnished with certificates, one of which, signed by Edmund Toppan, Esquire, testified to her success as a teacher in Hampton, Ruth Lamprey answered the summons ; taught for two years; fearlessly stood by the abolitionist and the slave; and gained strength and influence for the momentous future. Then she married.

Her husband, Deacon Cadle, was like-minded with herself. When the cholera epidemic raged through the Mississippi valley, in 1852, both labored incessantly, and often so nearly alone that, with their own hands, they nursed and laid out the victims by the hundred. But it was during the war that Mrs. Cadle's wonderful talents as organizer and executive were impressed upon the state of Iowa and its soldiery. She helped make the uniforms for the first two companies enlisted ; organized and presided over the Soldiers' Aid Society of Muscatine County, - a society that not only made bandages and lint and delicate cookery for the hospitals, but planted and raised for the Iowa soldiers a steamboat load of potatoes, probably ten thousand bushels ; and largely through her influence, did other works on as grand a scale. She was one of the prime movers and managers in the great Sanitary Fair, in Muscatine, that netted over twenty-five thousand dollars for the Sanitary Commission ; was one of the corporators of the Iowa Soldiers' Orphans' Home, since made a state institution; and to her, more than to any other, was due the erection of the first soldiers' monument in the state.

The same spirit of philanthropy characterized all her later years.
