HISTORY OF HAMPTON.

early in Hampton. Robert is. thought to have been living in Boston in 1638, when our town was settled ; while John, if born, must have been a boy, in the island home of his parents.

Two individuals of the name, not apparently connected with either family, were also living here at an early period. From the mention of both among the people concerned in the witchcraft trials. it seems probable that they may have been brother and sister. These were Nathaniel and Ann Smith.

The Salisbury Court Records contain the following, dated Apr. 10, 1677: "Nathaniel Smith being given to Dea. Wm Godfrey & his wife Margerie as their own & they having kept him from a child, Dea. God- frey being now dead & his widow having married John Marian, the court order that Smith shall continue & abide wth the sd Marion & wife until he comes to ye age of one & twenty yeare & shall do them faithful service."

Nathaniel Smith, "aged about twenty years," was one of the wit- nesess in the trial of Goody Fuller, for murdering John Godfrey's child by witchcraft (p. 85). His deposition was taken July 14, 1680. On the thirty-first of the same month, an inquest was held on his dead body, and the verdict rendered was: "We found him in a canoe at the landing place, with his face bloody ; and we, washing and search- ing him, do judge that water was the cause of his death, by drown- ing."

Ann Smith was alleged to be a victim of Goody Cole's wiles (p. 80). The year that Goody Cole died, Ann Smith, probably the same Ann, married Israel Clifford (4).

Henry Smith is also mentioned (p. 363).

I. ROBERT SMITH, born about 1611, was of Exeter, and a signer of the Combination, in 1639. He settled in Hampton as early as 1657, his homestead being where Joseph Johnson now lives. He was by trade, a tailor. Susanna, his wife, was killed by lightning, June 12, 1680. He died Aug. 30, 1706. We find no record of his chil- dren's births, and the following list may not be complete, nor ar- ranged in order of age. Children :
