CROSSE.
I. JOHN CROSSE, one of the grantees of the town, was of Ipswich in 1635, and is supposed to have come here with the first settlers, in the fall of 1638. Certain it is, that he was here in 1639, in which year he was made freeman. His house-lot was the next easterly of Roger Shaw's, and after living on it a few years, he sold it, to- gether with other lands, to Thomas Ward, and probably returned to Ipswich, where he is said to have died in 1652. Mr. Crosse appears to have been a man of considerable ability, and, as such, was not un- noticed by the people. He represented the town in the General Court at both sessions in 1640, and at the spring session in 1641. In May of the latter year, he was appointed with two others, by the General Court, to appraise the live-stock in the town, for taxation ; and, in June following, one of the commissioners for small causes, which office he held some more than two years. Dec. 14, 1639, he had 250 acres granted to him by the town for a farm, and in the assignment of rights in the commons, he received two shares, besides his farm-lots. He was one of a very few men among the early inhabitants, who were styled Mr., which was then an honorary title. His wife's name was Ann. Their daughter Ann was baptized in Newbury, Oct. 9, 1638.

DALTON.
I. REV. TIMOTHY DALTON, associate pastor, or as he was styled, teacher of the church in Hampton, soon after its settlement, died in 1661, his widow, Ruth, in 1666, and their only child, Timothy, previ- ons to 1652, as stated at length in the Ecclesiastical Department of this work.
October 10, 1657, Mr. Dalton conveyed his farm, of three hundred acres, lying on the south side of Taylor's river, by separate deeds of gift, to three of his kinsmen, giving one hundred aeres to each. The grantees were Jasper Blake (1), Nathaniel Batchelder. (3), and Eman- uel Hilliard (1). It seems probable that Mr. Blake was his brother- in-law. The relationship of Batchelder and Hilliard is not so clear, but it is supposed that their wives were nieces of Mrs. Dalton. In an indenture in 1664, she terms Nathaniel Batchelder "my constituted heir ;" and makes provision for Elizabeth (Hilliard) Merry and her

three (Hilliard) children. She also gives a small sum to Mary, wife of William Fifield (1), and to Walter Roper (1), who were, perhaps, relatives. Mrs. Dalton gave the bulk of her property to Nathaniel Batchelder (3).
II. PHILEMON DALTON, brother of the minister, was the progenitor of all the Dalton families that have since lived here. He was several years younger than his brother, as appears from the record of his ex- amination, April 15, 1635, previous to embarking for New England. He was then forty-five years of age, and his wife, Dorothy, thirty-five ; so that he was born about 1590, and his wife, about 1600. They brought with them a son, named Samuel, then about six years old. hence born about 1629. He appears to have been their only child. Mr. Dalton was fatally injured by the fall of a tree, and died June 4, 1662. Dorothy, his widow, was afterward married to Godfrey Dear- born (1). Philemon Dalton's house-lot was nearly opposite the Cen- ter school-house.
III. SAMUEL DALTON, son of Philemon (2), married Mehetabel, daughter of Henry Palmer, of Haverhill, Mass. ; inherited the home- stead. He was a very influential man, and for thirty years or more, held offices of trust and transacted a great amount of business.
"In answer to the motion of the deputy of Hampton, Mr. Samnel Dalton is appointed and impowered to solemnize marriage of persons (one of whom is resident in that towne), being published according to lawe, and to administer oathes to witnesses as cases may require, & also commissionated to be an associate in the County Courts as the last yeare." ( Mass. Rec. ; May 15, 1672.)
