HISTORY OF HAMPTON.

HOWARD .- HAYWARD.

I. WILLIAM HOWARD, Lieutenant, born about 1609, was admitted freeman, 1640 ; 1642, appointed a trial justice for small causes ; rep- resentative 1641 to 1645; received five shares of the commons, 1646.

In March, 1643, "part of the Brethren and most of the inhabitants of Hampton" sent a petition to the General Court at Boston, com- plaining "that he was established for a lief tenant over us without our knowledge or desires & hath so continued about the space of 3 years," and asking his removal for specified "defects." The court did not find the charges substantiated, but allowed the petitioners another training officer temporarily, in the hope that "after a while their spirits may close again."

Elizabeth Hoyt, of Hamp- ton Falls, married Edward Macklaughlin, of Dover, July 11, 1743.

HUNTON, now written HUNTOON.

D. T. V. Huntoon, of New York, author of The Huntoon Genealogy, supposes that William Hunton, the first of the name in this country, was a brother of Philip Hunton, a distinguished non-conformist minis- ter and author, of London, born in Andover, County Hampshire, 1598 ; graduated at Oxford, 1626; died 1682.

William Hunton received a grant of land in Hampton as follows : "The 24 : 2 mo. 1643 [Apr. 24, 1643] Granted to Will : Hunton 2 akers & { of upland adjoyning to Jefery Myngyes towords the northi- west & Tho : Levitts towords the south east ; one end abutteing upon the wigwas [wigwam] Lotts : & the other upon the comon towards the north-east -more or less as it layd out. Voted." This is all that is found on the records, implying that William Hunton was in Hampton. A record of the lots of land owned by the people here was made in 1644, when the foregoing lot had been alienated, as ap- pears in describing the lots of Samuel Getchell. [See Getchell.] Nothing is known with certainty of William Hunton's family, but it is supposed that Philip, the ancestor of the Huntoons of New England, was his son.

HISTORY OF HAMPTON.

Philip Hunton married Betsey Hall, of Exeter, and lived for a time in that town, where, in 1697, there was granted to "phillip huntune thirty acres of land joining to a piece of swamp, had formerly." Another grant was made in 1699. About 1703, he removed to Kings- ton, his wife having probably died in Exeter. He married, second, Hannah -. In 1707, he, with seven other men and their families, deserted the town, through fear of Indians ; but they were ordered back (p. 235). The same day that Col. Winthrop Hilton was killed, July 22, 1710, as Philip Hunton and his son Samuel were at work in a field, they were surprised by Indians, who mortally wounded the son and took the father, and one Jacob Gilman, captive, and sold them to the French, in Canada. They purchased their freedom, by building a saw-mill, said to have been the first erected in Canada, and returned home after two years.

"Mary Hussey, vidua," between whom no relationship is shown by the records. Their homes were on opposite sides of the Meeting- honse Green. It has been stated and it is generally believed that they were mother and son. This is probable enough, though proof seems to be lacking.

In the apportionment of house-lots in 1640, Widow Mary Hussey received five acres, bounded north by other five acres of Mary IIus- sey, east by the house-lot of William Marston, south by the Meeting- house Green and west by the house-lot of Philemon Dalton. This was very nearly where the town-house now stands.

"Widow Mary Hussey, 5 : 2 mo ; 1648, sells to John Woodin three lots of land (fifteen acres), of which ten aeres between Philemon Dal- ton and William Marston, to hold jointly with her during her natural life, and after her death to belong wholly to him and his heirs and as- signs forever." Woodin sold this property to Thomas Coleman in 1657, and the same year the latter sold to Joseph Merry. Merry's attorneys sold to Benjamin Church ; Church sold to Francis Jenness, in 1672 ; and in 1674 Jenness sold to John Smith, the tailor.

Early in 1650 seats were assigned in the meeting-house to "ould mistris hinsse" and "her dafter husse." No daughter is named on the records. Widow Mary Hussey died "16 : 4 mo [June 16] : 1660."

Assuming that Mary Hussey was the widow of John Hussey, of Dorking, several queries arise. Is there any significance in the simi- larity of the names, Wood and Woodin? Were they originally one, and was John Woodin a relative? Was Theodate Hussey, wife or daughter of Christopher (whichever of them was the survivor in 1650), or his elder daughter, Mary, the "dafter husse," to whom a seat was assigned in the meeting-house? When Thomas Coleman bought the place, had Widow Hussey gone over to the "Falls side," to spend her last years with her son Christopher ?.
