TUCK.
The name, Tuek, was in early manuscripts written variously, Tuek, Theke, Tewk, Took-indicating that the modern names, Tuck, Tooke, and Tewk had a common origin. Perhaps also, the family of Tuxbury,

(formerly written Tewksbury), still surviving in Hampton. in the name Williams, might trace their ancestry to the borough of Tewk or Tuck, in England,
I. ROBERT TUCK came to New England from Gorlston, county Suffolk, England, in 1636, or a little earlier. He lived a short time in Watertown, and probably, also, in Salem ; was one of the grantees and first settlers of Hampton; lived on Rand's hill and kept the "ordinary" (page 72) ; was selectman four years and town clerk three years. He died Oct. 4, 1664. His wife, Joanna, died Feb. 14, 1674. Their children, all born in England, were :

In October of the same year, Samuel Sherburne, having bought the Tuck place on Rand's hill, was licensed to keep the public house. Deacon Tuck's home- stead was betweeen Christopher G. Toppan's and the lot on which the railroad station stands. His house was near the southeast cor- ner of the Perry garden. He owned and cultivated a considerable quantity of land. He was, however, a carpenter by trade, and after 1686, a miller (Chap. XXXI, Tuck's Mills). He was highly esteemed by his townsmen ; was selectman ten years ; town clerk, fifteen years ; deacon of the church more than twenty-seven years. He was a dili- gent reader of the Bible ; and read it through in course, no less than twelve times, between Feb. 13, 1677, and May 21, 1715, as appears from his diary. After the first reading is the following entry :
"The 13th day of February, 1677, I began to Reade ye Bible through and I Read it all through from ye 1st chapter of Gennesis to ye last chapter of Revelations : by ye 18th day of December,
John Tueke."

He succeeded his father as deacon, and held the office nearly thirty-nine years ; was selectman eight years ; represent- ative five years. Like many another good man, he had his eccen- tricities. Having inherited the gristmill on Nilus Brook, he was himself the miller. The mill was about two and a half miles from his home as the roads then were. He owned a white horse, said to have grown old in his service, which he took to mill with him day after day, not to ride, but as a pack-horse, to carry on its back the bags of corn and grain, which he took and delivered gratuitously for his customers. There were times, however, when he would not thus accommodate,

nor even deign to notice any one as he passed to his mill. When the "odd fit" was on him, he seemed oblivious of everything around, and then the people asked no favors. It is traditional, that women, wish- ing to send grain to mill, were accustomed to go to their doors and watch his approach, being able to tell by his gait whether or not he had a "Tuck spell." If he had, they shut their doors without a word ; if not, they easily obtained a favor. Children :
