TOWLE.
Philip Towle, the patriarch of the Towle families, now numerous in New England and elsewhere, came to Hampton as early as 1657. He is said to have been of Irish extraction ; and the locality in Hamp- ton largely owned and settled by his posterity, was on that account, early called Ireland, a name it still retains. The time and place of his embarkation for America are unknown. Apr. 15, 1664, he bought, as is expressed in his deed, "one messuage, or dwelling house, with other out-housing therevnto belonging; as also a house Lott ad- joyning thereunto, containing by estimaccon seven acres and a halfe more or less (being formerly the house and land of Henry Ambrose) butting upon the highway leading to Exiter with one end, and with the other end upon the land of John Marian, lijng between the lands of the sayd John Marian on the west and the land of Jasper Blake east- erly." The house-lot here described has ever since remained in the Towle family, and is now John A. Towle's homestead. Before he settled down to farming, Mr. Towle probably led a sea-faring life, as in the deed he is styled "seaman." On one occasion, he and five others, "for taking tobacko neare ye meeting house in ye face of ye court, were fined, each of them, ten shillings according to law."
I. PHILIP TOWLE, married Nov. 19, 1657, Isabella, daughter of Francis Asten (1), her father having died about fifteen years earlier,
