NANCY TOWLE, third child of Col. Philip, was of an ardent tem- perament, and when she was converted, in 1818, all her enthusiasm took the form of religious devotion. Having attended the Academy for some time, she became a teacher, but soon felt called to preach. She made her first attempt to speak from a text at a meeting in Stratham. According to her own account, she was frightened and made a failure of it, but persevered till she acquired more confidence.

In 1822 she "felt her mind strongly drawn toward the south ; and, with her Bible as her only companion, took stage for Gloucester and other towns in Rhode Island and Connecticut," where the " steeple- houses" of several denominations were thrown open to her. After making several such tours, in the course of which she often met with Harriet Livermore, she went (in 1828) into the British possessions -near Eastport and as far as St. John, holding revival meetings. At the latter city, she first began to think of crossing the ocean, and with this plan in view, went to Halifax, N. S., in December, and

after preaching there about six weeks, journeyed on to Lunenburg and Liverpool. Here the hoped-for opportunity came, "kind friends of these regions being pleased to defray the expense of the voyage." Miss Towle and one companion sailed in June, 1829, and after a passage of three weeks, were kindly received at the greater Liver- pool, on the other side.

In Ireland, they found rougher treatment-"Some of Dow's fol- lowers," the people said, and shut their " preaching-houses ; " though a few heard them gladly.

In this year 1829 Miss Towle visited famine-stricken London ; and returned the next year to America, landing in Philadelphia, and making a continuons preaching tour towards home, arriving in Hampton after an absence of three and a half years, and having travelled nearly fifteen thousand miles. But the next autumn she was on the wing again - this time to Ohio, to combat the Mormons, lately arisen. She attended their meetings, read the book of Mormon and denounced the apostle, Smith, to his face.

She went South the next year, visiting Richmond about the same time with Lorenzo Dow and Harriet Livermore. In May she received news of her brother Philip's death, in Charleston, S. C., and love drew her on, to visit his grave and erect a monument to his mem- Ory.

In 1833 Miss Towle published a small book, entitled : " VICISSI- TUDES ILLUSTRATED, in the Experience of Nancy Towle, in Europe and America." The same year she went to Montreal, and the year following, began the publication of " THE FEMALE RELIGIOUS ADVOCATE," in New York city. But this did not long survive.

Impressions of her foreign travels remained longest in memory and glorified the phantasms of her later years, when, her over-taxed system shattered, her useful labors closed, the still restless soul kept up the hopeful refrain : "The good ship is coming - we're going to-morrow."
