XXXIII. JONATHAN MOULTON, General, Esquire, son of Jacob (15), married, first, Feb. 22, 1749, Abigail, daughter of Benjamin Smith (9) ; second, Sept. 11, 1776, Sarah, daughter of Dr. Anthony Emery (1), she being then about thirty-six years old. He built the house near Rand's hill, still called the General Moulton house, now owned by the heirs of Jabez Towle (45). The militia rolls, with rec ord of his military promotion, cannot be found. He was Colonel Moulton all through the Revolutionary war. On the church records we find : John Washington, son of "Col." Jonathan Moulton, baptized 1783, and Nathaniel Thayer, son of "Gen'!" Jonathan Moulton, bap- tized 1787. By the latter title he is always known at the present day. (See page 278.) Children :

Jonathan Marston (12) ; lived on the Newell Towle place (now Charles W. Clements'). He represented the town in the Pro- vincial Assembly at Exeter during the Revolution ; was a member of the Committee of Safety; Justice of the Peace, in the early part of the war; elected Jan. 17, 1776, one of the justices of the Inferior Court. He had six children, all of whom died in childhood, five of them by the throat distemper. Being left childless, he made his nephew, John Mobbs Moulton, his heir. Children :

LXIV. WILLIAM MOULTON, fishmonger, married Lydia Ann (Kel- ley) Walker, of Stratham, widow of David Walker (born in Lee) ; lived in Stratham and at the North Beach in Hampton. She married, third, Josiah H. Davis, son of Elijah (6). By her first marriage, she had one daughter, Annie May Walker, born in Stratham, May 23, 1856 ; married, first, Daniel W. Elkins, son of David B. (14) ; second, Ang. 28, 1885, Ephraim Cole Cook, of Kittery, Me. Mr. and Mrs. Moulton had children :

I. WALTER NEAL, perhaps a descendant of Capt. Walter Neal, who shared with Darby Field the honor of discovering the White Mountains, settled in the north part of the town, now North Hamp- ton. Children :

Walter. It was prob. this Walter, whose wife, Rachel, was bp. in No. H., Oct. 15, 1780; and ch., Sophia, a month earlier.

Ebenezer, lived in No. H. Had ch. bp. there.


II. JOSEPHI NEAL, Captain, son of John, lawyer, of Portsmouth, born 1782 ; married Mar. 5, 1809, Polly, daughter of Maj. John Dearborn (29) ; lived on the Dearborn homestead ; died Sept. 1, 1840. He was a brother of Rev. James Armstrong Neal, settled in the min- istry in Greenland ; Moses L. Neal, lawyer, clerk of the N. H. House of Representatives thirteen years ; and John Prentice Neal, principal of a seminary in South Carolina. Capt. Joseph Neal was an educated gentleman, genial and kindly in his intercourse with the people. His death was caused by his horse becoming frightened at the railroad, when the first locomotive passed through Hampton in 1840. Children : John D. (3). Sophia M. Joseph S. Mary M. Minerva.


III. JOHN D. NEAL, son of Capt. Joseph (4), married Harriet, daughter of Col. Merrick Piper, of Stratham, and granddaughter of Ezra Johnson (14) ; built his house on a part of the homestead. Children :
