GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL.
July, 1561 (between the seventh of the month, the date of his will, and the twenty third, when it was presented for probate), leaving three children, Thomas, John and Edith, all minors, and two brothers, Wil- liam and Thomas.
Thomas Dow, son of John, of Tylner, was afterward of Runham, in the same county. His wife's name was Margaret. He had two sons, Henry and Christopher, and two daughters, one of whom mar- ried Stephen Farrar, and the other, - March. Christopher married and had nine children.
IIenry Dow, the elder son of Thomas, lived at Runham. His wife's name was Elizabeth. Their children were Thomas, Henry, Edward, Mary, Frances and William, who must all have been young, when the father died, Dec., 1612, or Jan., 1613. Henry, the second son, came to Ilampton.
I. HENRY Dow, the progenitor of the Dow families of Hampton and vicinity, was the second son of Henry and Elizabeth Dow, of Run- ham, Norfolk, England, where he was born about 1608. On the elev- enth day of February, 1631, he married Joane, widow of Roger Nudd, of Ormsby, in the same county. then lately deceased, leaving an infant son, Thomas (1). After six years' residence in Ormsby, Mr. Dow ap- plied for permission to emigrate to America, and having been exam- ined, was granted a license, Apr. 11, 1637, for himself and family, as follows : Henry Dow, husbandman, aged 29 years ; Joane, his wife, 30 years ; with four children, and one servant (Anne Manning, aged 17 years), "who are desirous to pass into New England, to inhabit."
Mr. Dow settled first in Watertown, Mass. Here his wife died, and was buried, June 20, 1640 ; and he married, second, in 1641, Margaret Cole, of Dedham, Mass. Here, probably, the fourth child mentioned in his emigration license, died. He removed to Hampton in the latter part of 1643 or early in 1644, having previously bought of John San- ders a dwelling house (where the late John J. Leavitt's store now stands), and several tracts of land for a farm. This homestead re- mained in possession of his lineal descendants till after the death of Olive Dow, of the sixth generation, daughter of John (22), in 1854, when it was sold and passed into other hands.
This was the Ilenry Dow who was selectman in 1651 ; deputy from Hampton to the General Court of Massachusetts in 1655 and '56 ; and appointed, with two others, in 1658, to examine and record all land grants and highways. This last work was interrupted by his death, Apr. 21, 1659. On the twenty-third of October, 1661, his widow married, second, Richard Kimball, of Ipswich. Children :

II. HENRY Dow, Captain, Esquire, son of Henry (1), being about twenty- five years of age when his father died, settled the estate, as executor of the will, and remained on the homestead, in charge of the farm, the other children being minors. Two months later, he married Hannah Page, who came with her parents from Ormsby, in the same ship with the Dow family. He continued to have some care of his farm ; had some shipping interest ; was part owner of a sawmill; and kept a store, as appears from an account-book, still preserved. He was a land-surveyor ; selectman ; town clerk ; was deputy to the Gen- eral Assembly, clerk of the House, speaker, pro tem. He was mar- shal of Norfolk county, from Abraham Drake's resignation, in 1673, till the close of the Massachusetts government in New Hampshire ; was deputy marshal, under royal government ; and in 1680 appointed marshal for a limited time.
On the eighth of October, 1686, Mr. Dow was "admitted and sworn as an attorney and paid his fee."
He was ensign of the Hampton company of militia, in 1689; and in 1692, captain, his commission being signed by Sir William Phipps, then governor of Massachusetts, with which the New Hampshire towns were temporarily connected. From this time, he was generally styled Capt. Henry Dow.
During the administrations of Andros and Dudley, Captain Dow was one of the justices of the court for New Hampshire. In 1695 he was justice of the Inferior Court of Common Pleas, and was re- appointed to the same office in April, 1697. He was senior justice in 1699, and held the office till his death in 1707. From 1702 till his .death, he was a mandamus councillor. In all his life, his character was marked by strict integrity and piety.
Captain Dow kept a diary, which is still preserved, containing, among other matter, a brief calendar of daily events, chiefly personal, from March, 1672, to May, 1696. It is significant, however, that two

leaves, covering the time from July, 1683, to January, 1684, are torn out. These may have contained notes of political actions, possibly of Mr. Weare's mission to England at this time, in which Captain Dow took an active part, which he thought prudent to destroy. The whole period recorded in Chap. V is included in the time of this diary, a specimen folio of which is here reproduced.1
From the little book itself the character and ocenpations of the man appear. Now he is abont his farm work or launching a vessel or sawing at cedar swamp mill or laboring at the public works ; now lie is collecting a province rate ; again we find him with the Assembly at Great Island or in consultation with Mr. Vaughan, Mr. Cutt, Captain Sherburne ; and now speeding to Haverhill, Newbury, Ips- wich, Boston, on some unknown errand. Once more, he is exercis- ing his company in military tactics ; and anon there comes an Indian alarm, and we find him at the garrison or with the soldiers outside his own town.
Henry Dow married, first, June 17, 1659, Hannah, daughter of Rob- ert Page (1), "one just in her generation ;"2 second, Nov. 10, 1704, widow Mary Green, danghter of Capt. Christopher Hussey (1), "a gracious gentlewoman," as styled by a Boston newspaper, after her death, at the great age of ninety-four. Children :

1 The diary is written largely in a unique cipher, the entire key to which has never been discovered, though a few characters have long been known, and since the beginning of 1892 the whole alphabet has been worked ont. Still, there are many arbitrary signs in the com- pact pages of the book, which have thus far baffled study, and the question whether or not this may throw light upon any secret actions of town or province in those stormy times is yet unsolved.
