Edmund Johnson's home lot was given by him to his two sons, Peter and James, the latter having the eastern part, which came down to the late John Johnson by heirship and is now George A. Jolinson's (of another family), by purchase. James Johnson's house stood a few rods south of the one now on the lot. C. T. Libbey, Esq., of Portland, says : He probably learned his trade of Henry Sayward, in Hampton, and removed with him to York, as one of his workmen. In 1669, he is described as of York, in

a grant of land to "Henry Sayward, James Johnson and Thomas Patty." A document signed by him Dec. 23, 1670, gives his resi- dence again as Hampton. May 28, 1683, James Johnson, of Hamp- ton, bought ten acres of land at Spruce Creek; and Apr. 5, 1685, James Johnson, of Hampton, mill-wright, bought of John Shapleigh, of Kittery, one-fourth of a mill on Spruce Creek. Oct. 26, 1699, Enoch Hutchins, of Kittery, deeded property to "Mr. James Johnson, of the same place, millwright." June 25, 1700, other parties deeded to the same. His death is entered on the town records of Hampton and he probably died here. He left no will, but his heirs made a division deed of the property, according to his known wishes. His son Samuel re- ceived all his Kittery lands ; his homestead, lands in Hampton and personal property went to the other children. His widow died Jan., 1718. Children :

Christopher Toppan, which went on a fishing voyage to the Grand Bank in the summer of 1768, and never returned, vessel and all the crew being lost. Ilis widow married, second, Abner Sanborn (42). XIV. EZRA JOHNSON, son of Elisha (11), married Dec. 5, 1780, Ruth, daughter of Ephraim Marston (33) ; lived on the homestead, near his father's, on the site of George A. Johnson's house. Mr. Johnson, better known as "Captain Ezra," led a seafaring life, as master of his vessel. He was a noted mariner and considered an authority on the art of navigation. During the Revolution, he was a prize-master, and while out with one of his vessels was chased by a British sixty- four-gun frigate. He used his superior knowledge of the coast to good advantage ; for, seeing that the frigate was gaining on him, he led her on to Cash's Ledge, south of Mt. Desert, where she stuck fast till lifted by the tide, while his vessel, being of lighter draft, escaped. Children :

wards owned by Robert Marston, then Simon Marston, then William Moulton (the DeLancey place). He obtained also, at some time, tlie house-lot first assigned to Samuel Greenfield. This last, Jones sold to William English (Hotel Whittier lot).


Susanna, daughter of Thomas and "Aby" Jones, was baptized in Hampton, Oct. 29, 1639.


A Thomas Jones was of Kittery, Me., in 1652.


A Thomas Jones died in Gloucester, Mass., in 1671.


JOPLIN.


I. ABBOTT LAWRENCE JOPLIN, landlord, carpenter, born in Law- rence, Mass., Feb. 18, 1848, was one of the proprietors of the Ocean House, at the beach ; and since it was. burned, in 1885, has worked at his trade. He married at Lawrence, Dee. 5, 1868, Ellen Augusta Soper, born in Freeman, Me., Nov. 25, 1847. Their children, except the last two, were born in Lawrence, viz. :

IV. ROBERT S. KENNISTON, son of Ebenezer (3), born 1836 ; mar- ried Apr. 27, 1856, Sarah J. Richardson, of Gilmanton. He was then living in Hampton. Their daughter (name not recorded), born in Hampton, Jan. 23, 1858. He married, second, Rose Willoughby, and lived in Pittsfield, N. H., where he died, Oct. 7, 1876.

I. THOMAS KIMBALL, about whom nothing is known from the town records and who probably lived here but a few years, had a wife, Mary, and children :

KING.


I. THOMAS KING, carpenter, was one of the young men who re- ceived lots of land. He was of Exeter, Sept. 20, 1644, when he sold his lot in Hampton to Anthony Taylor (1).


KNIGHT.


I. RICHARD KNIGHT, miller, carpenter, lived at the Landing, where he built his grist-mill. In 1640 he framed the second meeting-house. There is no record of his family. He removed to York, Me., perhaps about the time he sold his home in Hampton, 1 though it is not unlikely

that he lived first for a time on his Marston purchase. (See begin- ning of Marston geneal.) The sale to Christopher Lawson is thus recorded (Suffolk Deeds, I : 68) :


"Richard Knight of Hampton granted vnto Christopher Lawson of Boston a dwelling house scituate at the landing place in Hampton, one Mill wth the appurtenances, one parcell of meddow ground lyeing betweene the trench & the mill, one peece of meddow grownd from the mill trench & ditch Seaven Acrs & halfe adjoyneing to the house, twelve Acres & halfe of vpland in the east field next adjoyning to John Brownes house lott. ffifty Acres of vpland at Gouges wigwam & ten Acres of meddow grownd adjoyneing to the same. And fourty Acres of vpland in the west field adjoyning to William Haywards land on the east & William Fifield on the west. And this was by an absolute deed of sale dated the 5 (3) 1645. II. JOSEPH KNIGHT'S wife, Elizabeth, died Nov. 26, 1791, aged twenty-seven years, three months. The stone at her grave is still plainly legible.


KNOWLES.


I. JOHN KNOWLES, mariner, married July 10, 1660, Jemima, daugh- ter of Francis and Isabella (Bland) Asten (1), of Hampton. A few years later, Mar. 25, 1666, he bought of Giles Fifield, who had been a resident of Hampton but was then of Charlestown, Mass., "one dwelling-house and house-lot," containing ten acres, together with six acres of marsh; the house and lot -being in Hampton "between ye ground of Jnº Garland on ye West : a common way on ye East ; another common way on ye South ; and common on ye North ; also two shares of commonage." This homestead has ever since been, wholly or in part, in possession of his descendants, and is now owned by Eldredge A. Knowles, of the seventh generation.


John Knowles was blind during the last ten years of his life. He died Dec. 5, 1705. Children :

XIII. DAVID KNOWLES, Esquire, son of Lieut. Amos (10), married at Wenham, Mass., June 8, 1852, Eunice, daughter of Samuel Co- nant, of that town. She was born in Lynn, Aug. 3, 1821. They lived several years on the Knowles homestead, but eventually removed to Newburyport, where Mr. Knowles died. His widow makes her home with her son, Charles W. Children :
