II. CHRISTOPHER HUSSEY, Deacon, Captain, probably son of John (1), was born in Dorking, England, in 1595 or 1596. Of his early education and employments we know nothing ; nor can we tell when his father died. With many of his countrymen, he was driven by re- ligions persecution to Holland, perhaps among the parishioners of Rev. Stephen Bachiler (1). It is said that when Christopher Hussey wished to marry that clergyman's daughter, Theodate, he, having de- termined to emigrate to America, would consent to the union only on condition that the young couple would emigrate also. The marriage took place in England, but whether before or after the sojourn in IIol- land is not known.

HISTORY OF HAMPTON.
Mr. Hussey, with his wife (and widowed mother?) arrived at Charlestown, Mass., it is supposed on the 23rd of July, 1630, in' the "William and Francis," which sailed from Southampton sometime in May. Two years later they welcomed to their home in Saugus (Lynn), Mrs. Hussey's father and some others of the family, with other friends and acquaintances from their native land. Rev. Mr. Bachiler, as we have seen, immediately established his church in Lynn. It is affirmed that on his first Sabbath there, he baptized four children ; that, being asked to baptize Thomas Newhall first, as he was the first white child born in Lynn, he refused, saying he would baptize his own child first - his grandson, Stephen Hussey, the second white child born in Lynn, then nearly two years old.
After the migratory movements noted in our Ecclesiastical History, we find Christopher Hussey and Widow Mary Hussey in Mr. Bach- iler's company at Hampton, as grantees of the town. Mr. Hns- sey was the first deacon of the church already established, and a prominent and influential man. His first home was on the site of Mr. Anthony Emery's, of more recent date, opposite that of his son Isaac Emery, of to-day ; but his farm (one of the "five farms") was on the Falls side of the town ; and thither he removed after a few years. "Capt. Hussey, 6 : 2mo [April 6]: 1650, sells to Stephen Sanborn and Samnel Fogg, their heirs, &c- all his houses and house-lots &c- in Hampton."
Deacon Hussey was a captain in the militia and a magistrate ; town-clerk, selectman and representative; and when New Hampshire was made a royal province, he was one of the councillors named in the royal commission.
His wife, Theodate (probably) died Oct. 20, 1649 (though it is possible thatit was his daughter Theodate, whose death at that date is recorded). He married, second, Dec. 9, 1658, Ann, widow of Jeffery Mingay (1), who died June 24, 1680. A few more years passed, and Captain Hussey, having rounded out ninety years in an honorable and distinguished carcer, died Mar. 6, 1686 ; "buried 8 March," as stated on the Town Records. Captain Henry Dow wrote in cipher in his diary for Monday, Mar. 8, that he was " at Captain Hussey's burial." It is therefore certain that he died in Hampton, and was not, as stated by Savage, cast away off the coast of Florida. Children :

JENNESS.
This name is often written JENNINGS on the early records, suggest- ing that Jenness and Jennings, now considered distinct names, may have been originally one. It is not known when Francis Jenness, the ancestor of the Hampton families, came nor whence he emigrated. There was a RICHARD JENNINGS, born in Ipswich, England, who came to this country in 1636 and returned in 1639. Possibly Francis was from the same place-possibly his son-though this is merely conjec- ture. Francis Jenness, born about 1634, is styled "seaman" and "baker." His name first appears on the Hampton records in 1670, when he married Hannah Swaine. It seems probable that he lived at the settlement for a time and moved up to what is now Rye in 1674, and that his land there was laid out to him the next year (p. 182). The following transactions are entered in detail on the old Norfolk County Records :
Feb. 6, 1672, Francis Jenness, of Hampton, bought of Benjamin Church, of Duxbury, the Widow Mary Hussey place, which on the 27th of the same month he reconveyed to Church, but probably only mort-

gaged it, since two years later it was still in his hands, and sold by him, as follows : "ffrancis Jenins of Hampton, Oct. 1, 1674, for £72, sells to John Smith (Tailor) his dwelling-house and house lot of 5 acres, & 5 acres more adjoining, bounded W. by land of Samuel Dal- ton ; E. by land of Wm Marston ; on the South abutting upon a com- mon way or land commonly called ye Ring, & on the North by land of Wm Marston & Tho : Page." This may have been about the time he settled on the land, already his, in the northeast part of the town, which has ever since been held in the Jenness name. A few days la- ter he conveyed a part of this Rye land to his two little children, Thomas and Hannah, as follows :
Francis Jenness, of Hampton, from love and affection, conveys to "my two children, Thomas and Hannah Jenness, 60 acres in the North Division lying neare to ye sea aboue ye long stony beach towards Pas- cataqua, being 3 shares lying together," two of them bought of Isaac Godfrey and one belonging to his house-lot, of which, Thomas to have 20 acres besides what had been made sure to him by a former deed ; and Hannah to have 40 acres after the death of the grantor's wife, Hannah Jenness. He makes his " father-in-law [his wife's step-fa- ther], Moses Cox, feefee in trust, " etc , Oct. 10, 1674.
The "former deed" referred to is as follows : "Moses Cox, of Hamp- ton, Dec. 30, 1672, for a valuable sum of money and other considera- tions, sells to Francis Jenness, of Hampton, and his son, Thomas Jen- ness, all his right, title and interest in a tract of land to be hereafter laid out (of about 50 acres), it being the right of two shares in the cow common in a late division of land called ye North Division, abut- ting upon Portsm° bounds towards the north & extending southward towards Hampton Meet& house - the 63 lot in number, bounded on the East by a grant to Edward Gove and on the West by a grant to Abraham Perkins."
It is said that when Francis Jenness went up to Rye, he cleared a piece of land by cutting down the forest and burning it over; then sowed wheat ; put up a gristmill and a bake-house ; reaped and ground his grain ; made bread; took it in a boat to Boston and sold it. This land is now owned by J. Disco and Sheridan Jenness ; and there is still a gristmill on the old site. (See Chap. XxXI-Rye Mills.)
I. FRANCIS JENNESS, born about 1634, settled in Hampton within the present limits of Rye. Ilis sons, John and Richard, and perhaps Hezekiah, lived in the same part of the town. He married, first, Feb. 15, 1670, Hannah, daughter of William Swaine (2) ; second, Feb. 4, 1701, widow Salome White, of Portsmouth. He died Ang. 27, 1716. Children :

I. EDMUND JOHNSON and his wife, Mary, were in Hampton in 1639. In June of the following year, he received from the town a house-lot and some other tracts of land ; and in 1646 three shares in the cow common. His house-lot included the homestead of the late John Johnson, and extended to the "Academy road," taking in the southern part of John A. Nudd's field, the house-lot of Nathaniel Johnson and the cemetery near it. Besides this was a small grant on the other side of the road-"abought thirtye rod which his house stand of [on] in the meeting house green layeing neere upon a square, Joyning up to a common way towords the east-otherwise the green goeth round abought it." [Laid out in September.] "Bro : Crosse wth 5 other brethren are appointed to sett out unto Edm : Johnson a little ground about his house, not prejudicing the beasts going to drinke in the Runne."
