MOULTON.

Among the grantees and first settlers of Hampton are found the · names of John and Thomas Moulton, whose relationship to each other is not known. They had assigned to them adjoining house-lots, and were neighbors more than fifteen years, till the latter sold his home- stead and other estate and removed to Maine. His house-lot was the one now owned and occupied by Walter J. Palmer.

John Moulton and Anne, his wife, were from Ormsby, in the county of Norfolk, England. They came to New England in the spring of 1637, having then five children, one son and four daughters. Another son, born afterward, was baptized at Newbury, Mass., and a daughter was born and baptized after their settlement in Hampton. His house- lot lay on the west side of that of Thomas, and was transmitted in his family down to Daniel Moulton, of the sixth generation, who sold the larger part of it in 1866, and the rest more than twenty years later.

Soon after the settlement of the town, we find, also, another of the name living here, viz. : William Moulton, the same, without doubt, that had, in 1637, come from Ormsby with the family of Robert Page, in the capacity of a servant, he being then twenty years old. He married, and lived near Mr. Page's residence, on the lot now owned by the DeLancey family. His descendants and those of John Moul- ton are numerous in this vicinity.

I. THOMAS MOULTON, born in England ; of Newbury, 1637; came to Hampton, 1638; removed to York, Me., about 1654. His wife's name was Martha. Children, as far as known :

Thomas, bp. Nov. 24, 1639. Daniel, bp. Feb. 13, 1641.

Mary, b. Jan. 25, 1651.

Hannah, b. June 19, 1655; [m. Samnel Tilton (2) ?].

II. JOHN MOULTON, born in England, about 1599 ; married Anne - ; immigrated, 1637 ; settled at Winnacunnet, 1638 ; freeman, - May 22, 1639 ; was chosen the first deputy or representative of the

town to the General Court at Boston, the next September. He died between Jan. 23, 1649, the date of his will, and Oct. 1, 1650, when it was proved, his age being about fifty years. Anne, his widow, died Apr. 12, 1668, aged sixty-eight years. Children :

Henry (4), b. ab. 1623; m. Sobriety Hilton ; d. Sept. 8, 1701.

Mary, b. in Eng. ; m. William Sanborn (3) ; d. Oct. 11, 1686.

Bridget, twins, b. in Eng., ab. 1634; both d., unm., Mar. 19, 1699.

John (5), bp. at Newbury, 1638 or '39; m. Lydia Taylor; d. 1705.

Ruth, bp. at H., Mar. 7, 1641; m. Peter Johnson (2); d. Sept. 7, 1718.

The twins, Jane and Bridget, for many years lived in a small house built for them by the roadside, near the site of Mr. Joseph Johnson's barn. Anecdotes illustrative of some peculiarities in their tempera- ment and character have been handed down by tradition. There is also preserved (N. H. Hist. Soc. Col. III : 122, ) a letter of Rev. Cot- ton Mather, to a gentleman of London, in 1716, wherein he says of them :

"At Hampton, a Town about Fifty miles from this place (Boston), there were Twin sisters, whose names were Bridget and Jane Moul- ton. The perpetual Harmony and Sympathy between the sisters was the observation of all the neighbourhood. They were never contented except they were together. If the one were desirous to go abroad, the other would be impatient of staying at home. If the one were merry, the other would be airy. If the one were troubled, the other would be chagrin [ed]. When one was for carding, the other was for spinning. For their Dispositions and Satisfaction there was a very strange Agreement betwixt them. The particulars wherein every body with pleasure and wonder saw how they were agreed, and how like your famous Twins of Hippocrates, which you tell us would Flere et Ridere simul [weep and laugh at the same time], were numberless. They lived a Virgin life, and in this good accord, reached about three- score years. Then Death after a short sickness arrested the one of them. The other grew full of pain, and bid her friends not be in a hurry about her sister's funeral for her's must accompany it. By dy- ing within a few hours after her sister, she answered their expecta- tions. Mr. John Cotton, the worthy minister of the place, preached a Funeral sermon for this occasion on those words, 2 Samuel 1 : 23, 'In their Death they were not divided.'"

III. WILLIAM MOULTON, born in England, about 1617; married Margaret, daughter of Robert Page (1) ; died Apr. 18, 1664. Their children :
