THE SAMBORNE FAMILY IN ENGLAND.

BY V. C. SANBORN, CHICAGO, ILL.

The name Samborne, spelt also Sambourne and Sandbourne, is found in England as the name of a place and as a family name. As the name of a place : (A) In Warwickshire ; - a hamlet a few miles from Alcester, of which Dusdale says: "Of this place, having its original denomination from that little sandy brook, nigh unto which it stands, I find very ancient mention, viz., in anno DCCXIV, it being then (inter aliis) given to the monks of Evesham, by Egwin, Bishop of Worcester, upon the foundation thereof." (B) In Wor- cestershire ; in the parish of Kiddeminster. (C) In Yorkshire ; mentioned in Bawden's Doomsday for Yorkshire : " In Sabura (Sanburn) there are three carucates : Ralph Paganel holds it. The canons say they themselves had it in the time of Edward." (A caru- cate is about 100 acres). (D) The name Sombourn exists also in Hampshire - possibly an allied name.

As a family name : If the name of this family were taken from their lands, that fact would be indicated in old records prior to 1300; but none such yet appear, except that, in 1211, the Wiltshire " Placite "

speak of a Julian de Saudeburne, which may be a mistake for Sande- burne. The next mention of the name is in 1333, Robert de Sam- bourne being that year incumbent in Somersetshire. After 1350 the name appears more frequently and there are several pedigrees in the Heralds' Visitations. There appear to have been two branches of the family : - one, settled at Sunning, in Oxfordshire ; the other, at Timsbury, in Somersetshire. [See Gen. Reg., July, 1885.]

The arms of the Samborne families are the same, viz. : Argent, a chevron sable between three mullets gules, pierced or. Three crests are given : 1. Samborne,- a dexter hand holding a sheaf of arrows, all ppr. 2. Samborne of Moulsford, Berks., a bull's head holding in the month three ears of wheat, all ppr. 3. Samborne of Timsbury House, a mullet gules, pierced or.

The following pedigree is compiled from various sources, and brings the family down to the generation following that of John (?) Samborne, the father of the three American emigrants.

I. WILLIAM SAMBOURNE, of Sunning, Oxfordshire, born about 1390; married Anne, daughter and heir of Sir William Lushell, Kt. Children : William (2), born about 1420. John (3?), born about 1425. (I have given Jolin and William as brothers, although no proof has yet been found of this.)

XV. JOHN SAMBORNE, supposed to be the father of the first three American Sambournes - described in the London Visitation of 1687, as a merchant, with his brother Richard (13). The Sambornes in England were very few, in 1620, and indeed, no branches have been traced, except those given above.

John Samborne was born about 1590, and probably removed to London with his two brothers by 1615; but the family ties were in Dorsetshire, the next county to Hampshire, where lived Rev. Stephen Bachiler, whose daughter married the father of the first three Ameri- can Sambornes. In 1630-31 we find her a widow, living in the Strand, in London ( Waters' Gleanings).

SANBORN.

John, William and Stephen Sanborn, brothers, were grandsons of Mr. Steven Bachiler, the first pastor of the church in Hampton. Ac-

1 The State Papers between 1650 and 1660 contain frequent references to these brothers, who were merchants in France and loyalists who aided in the Restoration. Thomas was in Morlaix and John, in Rouen and Caen. Clarendon's State Papers contain letters which passed between the Lord Chancellor and John Samborne, who appears to have been high in favor with the conrt. "Petition, dated July, 1660, of Thomas and John Samborne, mer- chants, for the nomination of one of them as commissioner in the Excise Office. They have done great service in the late war, in relieving persons of quality and others related to His Majesty; they have had several commissions from the late and present king; supplied munitions. etc., to the value of £25,000; were banished and sold their inheritance, for fear of sequestration. On the king's escape from Worcester and landing in Ronen, John Sam- borne was the only person to whom he trusted the secret of his arrival," etc., etc. [Cal. State Papers, 1660.]

944

HISTORY OF HAMPTON.

cording to tradition, their father died in England, leaving these sons and their mother to the care of Mr. Bachiler, her father, and they all came to New England with him in 1632, and about six years later, to Hampton. Such is probably the general belief; but no evidence is found that the mother of these young men ever came to America. It seems pretty evident that her home was not in Hampton at the time of " seating the meeting house," in the early part of 1651, as no seat was then provided for her; and her name is not found in the recorded list of deaths in the town ; nor is any allusion made to her in any of the old papers examined.

The three brothers named were here and all of them in possession of house-lots as early as 1644. Their names are all on a tax-list of 1653, and all held town offices. Stephen, however, did not make Hampton his permanent home. In 1655 he resigned the office of selectman several months before the expiration of his term, for the purpose, it is said, of accompanying his grandfather Bachiler in his return to England. The date of leaving New England is not known.

John Sanborn, one of the immigrants, received for a house-lot, partly by grant from the town, and partly by gift from his grand- father, Mr. Bachiler, four acres of land, which appears to have been a part of what constituted the homestead, in later years, of Dea. Alvin Emery. His house is said to have stood a few rods further west than the one now on the lot.

William's house-lot is described in the Town Records, as follows : " 1. Impr five acres of upland for a house lott : and three quarters of an acre of ground aded to the south end therof : layeing together between the grownd of John Browns toward the east, & the grownd of Aquila Chases, sometimes Steven Sanborns in prt : & grownd of William fifilds sometimes the afore[sayd] Stenen Samborns in prt toward the west; abutting upon a commonway toword the north ; & a certaine swamp toword the south : more or lesse as it is layd out." This is now John A. Philbrick's homestead.

Stephen's house-lot, sometime before 1644, was on the westerly side of his brother William's; but at that date, it appears to have passed out of his possession. In 1653, he was probably living near his brother John.
