Capt. Bogart died in Hampton, Dec. 20, 1885, aged fifty-one years. His widow removed to Boston.

BOULTER.

Nathaniel Boulter had received a tract of land in Hampton and had sold it to William Howard previous to July 8, 1644, when, in answer to the question whether he "were an inhabiter of Hampton," it was decided as follows : "The townsmen do judge that he was an inhab- iter, and therefore approve and confirm the bargain between him and Howard." In 1645 he was living in Exeter. Not long after, perhaps about '47, he married Grace, daughter of Richard Swaine (1), and possibly returned to Hampton at that time.

HAMPTON COURT, 26th 7 mo : 1648 : "It is ordered by this court that Nathaniel Boulter is fined 10$ for a lye in open Court affirming a thing agt two witnesses."

"Nath1 Boulter being convicted the second time of drunkenness be- fore the worshippfull Mr Rich : Saltonstall is finde according to Law 20s."

GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL.

July 4, 1660, Boulter bought of John Barrett, "Ensigne of Wells in ye county of Yorke in New England" about 100 acres "lying up Taylor's River by the Indian Graves (called James Wall's farm) ;" and Sept. 4, he received from his father-in-law four acres, more or less, with all the orchard growing on it off the easterly part of his house-lot, "abutting on the meeting house green" [at Rand's hill]. Also, Swaine gave to Grace the rest of his house-lot, westward to the fence of the heirs of William Swaine, except a small parcel, about one acre, in the custody of Moses Coxe, to be kept fenced by him, he having married William Swaine's widow. This seems to have been preliminary to Rich- ard Swaine's removal to Nantucket. July 6, 1663, he conveyed to Boul- ter one-half his purchase there and gave him a power of attorney to do business in IIampton. Four years later, Nathaniel and Grace Boul- ter sold to Hannah and John Souther, minor children of John and Hannah Souther, a part of the Swaine land (one acre-the little par- cel fenced by Coxe), described as being bounded south by "another part of sd lot now taken by execution by Capt. James Pendleton," of Portsmouth. The same year Boulter sold to Daniel Dow two and a half acres of planting ground west of the Souther acre, together with one share of the cow common and one share of the Great Ox Com- mon. In 1673 Pendleton sold the homestead to Richard Oliver. Boul- ter seems to have been a man of ability but not altogether prosperous.

HISTORY OF HAMPTON.

BRABROOK.

I. JOHN BRABROOK (written also Bradbrook, Braybrook and Bra- brick). was of Watertown in 1640. He received a grant of land in Hampton the same year, but apparently remained where he was for a time, as he had sons born in Watertown: John, born 1642. Thomas, born 1643. He died in Newbury, June 28, 1662.

Rachel Brabrick, probably his daughter, m. John Fuller (3) ; d. Jan. 16, 1715, æ. 60 y.

BRACKETT.

I. ANTHONY BRACKETT, Captain, son of Anthony, of Portsmouth, lived in Falmouth (Portland), Me. On the 9th of August, 1676, some Indians killed one of his cows, and he complained to a chief, named Symon, who promised to bring the culprits to him. Two days later Symon appeared, early in the morning, at the head of a party, and said : "These are the Indians that killed the cow." Then they en- tered the house, seized the guns, and asked Capt. Brackett whether he would go into captivity, or be killed. He preferring captivity, the In- dians bound him, his wife and a negro, and carried them and five chil- dren away as prisoners. In November following, Captain and Mrs. Brackett, one child and the negro made their escape in a leaky canoe. The wife, Ann, died soon after, and the remainder of Capt. Brackett's life is identified with Hampton.

He married, second, Nov. 9, 1678, Susannah, daughter of Abraham Drake (3). The historian, Drake, says: "When Col. Church had the memorable fight with the Indians at Casco, Sept. 21, 1689, Capt. Brackett was killed. After this, his wife and children went to her father's at Hampton, but finally returned to their possessions." But their children's births are recorded in Hampton, as are the children of their son Zechariah, and the presumption is that during some of those years, the home was here. Mrs. Brackett became the wife of John Taylor (2), and died in 1719. Children of Anthony and Susanna Brackett :

James, b. Feb. 7, 1679.

Zipporah, b Sept. 28, 1680; m. Caleb Towle (5) ; d. Aug. 14, 1757.
