HISTORY OF HAMPTON.

JOHN MASON, the earliest known settler of the name in Hampton, was a deputy marshal in 1684 (p. 111). He probably left but one son, who seems not to have had a family here. IIis descendants in Hampton are through his eldest daughter. About thirty years later came Robert, from whom the Hampton Masons are descended. A dozen more years and Nathaniel appears, whose descendants here are in the female line. The relationship among these three men-and their origin are unknown. There was a Joseph Mason, a witness, at Hampton, in 1645 ; but whether or not he was a resident is not known and nothing further has been found concerning him.
