HISTORY OF HAMPTON.
England, and settled first in Dover. The first notice of him on record, however, is in Portsmouth, where a house-lot was granted him in 1656. It was probably in the spring of 1666 that he settled, without permission of the town, on land belonging to Hampton, on Jocelyn's Neck, now a part of Rye. He was, about a year and a half afterward, admitted as an inhabitant, by vote of the town. He married about 1652, Elizabeth, daughter of William Berry. He was killed by Indians, Aug. 26, 1696, aged, as is supposed, about seventy years. His widow was living in Feb. 1707.
The tragedy of Captain Locke's death occurred during King William's war, when men went armed, to their daily work. It is said that, having stood his gun against a rock, he was reaping grain, when several Indians crept stealthily up behind and shot him with his own weapon. Supposing liim dead, they rushed upon him, for his scalp, when he revived, struck out with his sickle and cut off the nose of one of the Indians. Years afterward, a son of his met a noseless Indian in Portsmouth ; the recognition was mutual ; but whether vengeance followed, we are not informed. The following incomplete, and, as the compiler remarks, in some particulars probably erroneous record of his children is from THE BOOK OF THE LOCKES, by John G. Locke. Children :
