GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL.
X. PAINE WINGATE CHASE. In the year 1826 the Academy sus- tained a heavy loss in the death of its preceptor, Paine Wingate Chase. As an instructor of youth, Mr. Chase was excelled by few. To a commanding and manly deportment he added a sound and vigorous mind. Having himself a thorough knowledge of the studies which he was called to teach, and devoting a large share of his atten- tion to the duties of his station, he was enabled to communicate instruction to others with clearness and facility.
He was born at Litchfield, N. H., and educated at Yale College, where he graduated in 1821. He took charge of Hampton Academy in February, 1825, and continued nearly two years. At a time when the friends of the institution were anticipating much from his labors and fidelity, death unexpectedly put an end to his career. After having performed the duties of the day, he died suddenly, on Saturday evening, November 4, 1826, aged thirty-three years. Upright and honorable in all his dealings and exemplary in his conduct as a christian, he was beloved and respected while he lived and lamented when he died.

His house lot, on what is now the Perry estate, was (probably soon after) bought of Christopher Lawson, a real estate dealer, of Boston and Exeter, by Henry Green, who was admitted freeman the same day as
