PERKINS.

A few months after the settlement of the town, there were living in Hampton, two men of the name of Perkins, with their families.

908

HISTORY OF HAMPTON.

According to tradition, these men, Abraham and Isaac, were broth- ers -- which is very probable, though we may not be able to verify it. They appear to have come at nearly the same time, and the house- lots, assigned to them by the town, adjoined each other, each con- taining five acres. Isaac's house was on nearly the site of the Bap- tist parsonage, and Abraham's between that and the corner lot west- ward, which then belonged to William English.

I. ABRAHAM PERKINS, born about 1613, was admitted freeman May 13, 1640. In January preceding, the town granted him eighty acres of land; and in 1646, three shares in the commons. He was often employed in business for others and for the town. His handwriting is remarkbly neat and legible, and is more modern in appearance than most of the old penmanship. He was marshal in 1654. He seems to have remained through life where he first settled. He died suddenly, Ang. 31, 1683, aged seventy years. His wife, Mary, died May 29, 1706, aged eighty-eight years. Their children :

Mary, bp. Dec. 15, 1639; m. Giles Fifield (2).

Abraham (6), b. Sept. 2, 1639. It has been claimed that he was the first white child born in H., but at least one other, Peter Johnson (2) was bp. earlier, and perhaps born here. He m. Elizabeth Sleeper; was killed by Indians, June 13, 1677 (p. 221).

Luke, b. 1641; m. 1663, wid. Hannah Cookery, dau. of Robert and Eliza- beth Long; lived in Charlestown, Ms. Their son, Luke, m. Martha, dau. of Lot Conant, of Plympton, Ms., and had a son, Mark, whose son, Isaac, was the father of Dr. Cyrus Perkins, professor in Dartmouth Col- lege and later a practising physician in New York city.

Humphrey (9), b. May 17, 1661; m. Martha Moulton; d. Jan. 7, 1712.

II. ISAAC PERKINS lived for more than ten years where he first settled. In June, 1652, Rev. Timothy Dalton sold to him, for fifty pounds, his farm (granted first to his son, who died,) lying next Salis- bury line (in Seabrook) ; and Perkins probably removed thither soon after. He died Nov., 1685. His wife's name was Susanna. Their children :
