XV. ROBERT SMITH, physician, came from Salem, N. H. ; mar- ried Hannah, daughter of Abraham Marston (39) ; lived where Oli- ver Towle now lives ; afterwards, opposite John H. Fogg's ; was a public school teacher and singing master. His young wife died in 1840, leaving a son and a daughter. He removed from town after a few years, and married again.

I. JOHN SOUTHER married Hannah Reed in Boston, Jan. 11, 1661, as appears from the Boston Records, and their first child was born there. In 1666 he was living in Hampton. STOCKMAN.
I. MOODY STOCKMAN, son of Jonathan, of Salisbury, Mass., was born in Topsham, Me., Oct. 2, 1789 ; taught school in Hampton in 1814, and the next year became a trader in North Hampton. He married May 21, 1815, Clarissa, daughter of Capt. Jonathan Mars- ton (42). In 1816 he settled in Hampton, where he was a successful merchant till 1829, when he removed to Charlestown, Mass. (now Boston). His residence in Hampton is still sometimes called "The Stockman place" (now Oliver Towle's).
He was librarian of the "old library" nine years, from 1818; was one of the first permanent board of trustees of Hampton Academy ; and an influential citizen in educational and business affairs. While in Hampton Mr. Stockman invented an improved method of manufac- turing isinglass ; also, an improvement in Bicknell's gristmill.
He was in Capt. Philip Towle's company for the defense of Ports- mouth, in 1814. After removing from Hampton he resided in Charles- town till his death, July, 1841. Children :

I. RICHARD SWAYNE and his wife, Basselle, were residents of Hampton, soon after the town was settled, coming hither from Rowley, Mass. Their sons, William and Francis, preceded the par- ents in coming to America. "Entered as passengers in the Rebecca, John Hedges, master [6 Apr., 1635], William Swayne, 16, and Fran- cis Swayne, 14" years of age.

Richard Swayne's house-lot of ten acres lay next to Rev. Timothy Dalton's, and was bounded on the north by the road leading to the Falls. He appears to have been a man of considerable property ; was one of the proprietors of Nantucket, to which island he removed soon after 1660. His wife, Basselle, died July 15, 1657. He married, sec- ond, Sept. 15, 1658, Jane Barker.
The General Court enacted, Nov. 12, 1659 : "That Richard Swayne for his entertaining the Quakers shall pay as a fine the some of three pounds & be disfranchised." Children :

BENJAMIN SWETT, Captain, son of John Swett, of Newbury, was born in England as early as 1626 ; married Nov. 1, 1647, Hester or Esther, daughter of Nathaniel Weare, Sen., of Newbury ; removed to Hampton in 1662 or'63, and settled on the "Falls side." He was killed by Indians, June 29, 1677 (p. 223). His widow married, sec- ond, Mar. 31, 1678, Ens. Stephen Greenleaf, of Newbury. She died in Hampton Jan. 16, 1718, aged eighty-nine years.

VII. JOSEPH SWETT, son of -, married Hannah [Sayward ?]. He was probably the Joseph Swett, of Hampton, N. H., tanner, who bought of Edward Beale, one hundred fifty-six and one-half acres of land in York, Me., Jan. 31, 1718. On the York Town Rec- ords are entered the births of four children to Joseph and Hannah Swett, which are here numbered as belonging to Joseph (7). The first three are from the Hampton Town Records. On the above sup- position, there is an error in date of the third or fourth. Children : Mary, b. Mar. 5, 1715. Susanna, b. May 7, 1716.

I. ANTHONY TAYLOR, felt-maker, the first of the name in Hampton, was here soon after the settlement of the town. He had "five acres of upland and swamp granted unto him at two severall times; and five acres of upland and swamp Bought of Thomas Kyng - granted unto him likewise at two severall times ; Ten acres in all ; layeing be- tween the house lott of Wolter Roper toword the south ; and common ground wher the clay-pitts are, in prt : and the lott of Henery Green in prt : and a certayne swamp in prt toword the north : Abutting upon the meeting-house-green in prt and a common waye in prt toward the east : and upon another pri of the sayd swamp toword the west ; more or lesse as it is layd out." His house stood where Christopher G. Toppan now lives, though he lived, at first, on another lot, near the late Moses Towle's. His wife was Philippa (or Phillis?). He died Nov. 4, 1687, aged eighty years. She died Sept. 20, 1683. Their children :
