GODFREY.

I. When WILLIAM GODFREY, the first of the name in Hampton, came to New England is unknown. He lived awhile in Dedham, Mass., and several years in Watertown; was made freeman in 1640. In May, 1648, he bought of Samuel Getchell (then of Salisbury), five acres for a house-lot, between the lots of Thomas Leavitt and Giles Fuller (on the Exeter road), also other land. There were two deeds recorded, of the same date, conveying the same property ; in one of which, Godfrey was said to be of Watertown, and in the other, of Hampton. On the 18th of May, 1649, being then of Watertown, he bonght of William Payne, of Ipswich, for £55, forty-four acres of land in Hampton, together with one share of the Great Ox-Common, and two shares of all other commons. On one lot of fifteen acres, there was a dwelling house, to which he appears to have removed his family soon afterward. His house was on the west side of the "country road," a little distance south of the residence of Christopher G. Toppan. In 1654 he was a selectman, but was not often employed
