SANDERS OR SAUNDERS.


I. JOHN SANDERS, of Ipswich, 1634, freeman, May 25, 1636, or May 13, 1640 (one of-the name at each of these dates), was of Hamp- ton, 1643, when he sold his house-lot to Henry Dow and probably went to Newbury, as he was there in 1645. In 1649 he was again in Hamp- ton.

SANDERSON OR SAUNDERSON.


I. ROBERT SAUNDERSON received a grant of eighty acres of land in Hampton, Dec , 1639. This included a house-lot, which he sold to Francis Swaine. A Robert Sanderson, perhaps the same, was of . Watertown, 1642.

SARGENT.


I. WILLIAM SARGENT was one of twelve men, who began a settlement at Ipswich, Mass., in 1633. He soon after went to Newbury, and in 1638 was one of the grantees of Hampton. He appears to have lived here only a short time, at the commencement, and then to have gone to that part of Salisbury now Merrimack, where he spent the remainder of his days. He died about 1675.

JOHN SARGENT, fisherman, was of the Isles of Shoals in 1658 ; at Winter Harbor in 1660; at Great Island in 1677. With Bryan Pen- dleton and others, he had a new plantation granted, May 12, 1675, above Saco. In 1684 he was representative to the Mass. Gen. As- sembly. He had children :

He was prominent in public affairs and was highly esteemed. He married, first, Oct. 16. 1711, Dorothy, daughter of Dr. Humphrey Bradstreet, of Newbury, Mass. (born Dec. 10, 1692 ; died in Hampton Dec. 11, 1743) ; second, 1749, Sarah, widow of John Winslow, of Boston, and daughter of Joshua Pierce (born Apr. 30, 1697 ; died Aug. 25, 1771). Children, all born in Hampton :

VI. SAMUEL P. SARGENT, of Salem, N. H., married Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel Cutts (1) ; settled in Hampton, where Sylvanus B. Coffin formerly lived. No children. Mr. Sargent was a soldier in the Civil war. (See Perkins Post-Chap. XVII. )


Jacob Sargent, of Cheshire, and Alice Edmunds, of Hampton Falls, were married Oct. 28, 1756.


SAYWARD.


I. HENRY SAYWARD received a grant of a windmill lot in 1642 (Chap. XxXI) ; twelve acres in the north field, previous to 1644 ; one share of the Commons, 1646 ; was of Strawberry Bank, 1650 ; planter, of Sagamore Creek. 1652. He went to York, and then receiving a grant of land from the town of Wells, on condition of his building a mill on what he afterwards called Mousam River, removed thither. His wife's name was Mary. Their son : Joseph, b. Nov. 16, 1655.


II. ROBERT SAYWARD received one share of the Commons, 1646.


SEAWARD.


I. JOHN M. SEAWARD, of Portsmouth, came to Hampton between Mar., 1822, and Apr., 1824. He kept a store, was librarian of the "old library," and active in town affairs. His wife was Patty, daugh- ter of Peter Mason, of New Durham, and sister of John Mason (10). They removed to Natick, Mass., in May, 1845. Their children : Martha, b. in Portsmouth, Dec., 1816; lives with her brother, John M. Susan, b. in Portsmouth, July, 1819.

SHAW.


ROGER SHAW, the progenitor of the Shaw families of Hampton, was of Cambridge, Mass., in 1636; was made freeman, 1638; came to Hampton, about 1647, where he bought the right of Jolin Cross to cer- tain tracts of land, and also received some grants from the town. He settled where Simeon Shaw now lives, the present house being a few rods easterly of the site occupied by the earlier families.


Mr. Shaw was a large landholder, and an influential man. He was a selectman in 1649 and 1654; a constable also in the latter year ; a commissioner for small canses in 1651; and he represented the town in the General Court in 1651, 1652 and 1653.


I. ROGER SHAW, born in England ; married, first, Anne - second, Susanna, widow of William Tilton (1). She died Jan. 28, 1655. He died May 29, 1661. He is known to have had seven chil- dren, which, for convenience, are arranged as follows :

SAMUEL SHAW, Deacon, son of Joseph (2), married, first, Esther [Batchelder, daughter of Nathaniel (3) ?], who died Jan. 24, 1715, aged about fifty years ; second, June 1, 1716, Mary, daughter of John Tuck (3) ; lived on the homestead, at Hampton Falls. In 1706 he was chosen a deacon of the first church, and at the forma- tion of the Falls church, held the same office there. His will, proved Dec. 4, 1723, mentions but two children, Elizabeth, then unmar- ried, and his only son, Samuel, who was to be "brought up to good learning till he is fit to be put to college." V. CALEB SHAW, son of Joseph (2), married Elizabeth, daughter of Timothy Hilliard (2) ; lived in Hampton Falls, where the births of all his children are recorded. If he ever lived on Sargent's Island (p. 514), it was but temporarily. He was a mariner; in 1714, was master of the sloop, Mayflower ; drowned at sea. Children :

IX. EBENEZER SHAW, son of Caleb (5), married Nov., 1738, Anna Philbrick ; lived on Sargent's Island, where he had his home about twenty years ;' engaged in coasting and fishing. In 1762, re- moved with his family to the vicinity of Sebago Lake, in Maine, and settled within the limits of the present town of Standish, where he died. His widow died Dec. 12, 1804, aged nearly eighty-four years. At that time her descendants numbered two hundred one, viz. : nine children; eighty two grandchildren; one hundred nine great grandchildren, and one of the fifth generation. Mr. Shaw's children were all born in Hampton; all except Margaret settled in Standish. Children :

June 17, 1874, aged 87 yrs., leaving his records to his son, Thomas Shaw, of the same town. Anna, wife of Thomas Shaw, d. May 18, 1808, aged 57 yrs. , IIe m., 2d, Nov. 20, 1809, Susanna Thomas. He d. Oct. 20, 1838. Ten ch.
