STRAIN, BENJAMIN TURNER CORPORAL, U.S.M.C. Son of Samuel M. and Anna Turner Strain; born June 18, 1896, Newton, Kan. Moved to Greensburg, Ind. about 1912. Railroad employe. Enlisted in U.S. Marine Corps in June, 1917, St. Louis, Mo. Trained at Parris Island, S. C. Overseas in May, 1918; assigned to 45th Company, 5th Regiment. Killed in action June 6, 1918, Chateau-Thierry. On June 28, the Distinguished Service Cross was awarded him (posthu- mously) for extraordinary heroism in action.

Educated in Indiana University, and while a student, entered Second Officer's Train- ing Camp, Ft. Benjamin Harrison, 1917. Commissioned First Lieutenant. Assigned to Aviation Signal Corps, 277th Aero Squadron. Trained at Long Island. Died of influenza De- cember 7, 1918. Buried, St. Paul, Ind.

Sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Overseas in April, 1918; attached to Company D, 60th Infantry, 5th Division. Participated in battle of St. Mihiel, and Meuse- Argonne Offensive. Killed in action October 14, 1918, Cunel, France. Buried in Romagne; Grave No. 168, Sec. 60, Plot 4.

Son of David W. and Alberta Mae Clouse; born December 12, 1894, near Eaton, Delaware County, Ind. Telephone line- man. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army July 14, 1917, Ft. Harri- son, Ind. Sent to Camp Gordon, Ga .; assigned to Company G, 307th Field Signal Battalion. Overseas in May, 1918. Took part in the battle of St. Mihiel, and the Meuse-Argonne Drive. Killed in action October 8, 1918. Buried in American Military Cemetery, Chattel-Chehery, Ardennes, France.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Conner; born February 10, 1897, Dupont, Jefferson County, Ind. Machinist. Entered service December 10, 1917, Muncie, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky .; assigned to 623rd Aero Squadron. Went overseas July 31, 1918. Transferred to 310th Aero Squadron. Died of influenza October 10, 1918 Amesbury, England. Survived by widow, Cora Alice Conner, and one child, Wilma Earlene, Muncie, Ind.


DANFORD, SHARON MCKINLEY - - CORPORAL Son of William H. and Etta L. Danford; born July 28, 1894, Dawson, Shelby County, Ohio. Moved with parents to Muncie, Ind. in June 1900. Entered service December 3, 1917, Indian- apolis, Ind. Sent to Ft. Thomas, Ky. Overseas in April, 1918; assigned to Company D, 1st Army Supply Train. In service at St. Mihiel, and Verdun. While stationed in Toul Sector, he was killed in motor truck accident November 6, 1918. Buried just north of Toul, France.


DAVIS, IVAN C. PRIVATE


Son of Mathew and Rosetta E. Davis; born September 21, 1888, near the Delaware-Jay County line. Clerk in hardware store. Entered service June 7, 1918, Pawpaw, Mich. Sent to Camp Custer, Mich., where he died June 14, 1918, from effects of operation for abcess on the brain. Buried in Black's Ceme- tery, Delaware County, Ind. Survived by widow, Vera Adams Davis, and one son Norman Davis, Dayton, Ohio.


DEEMS, HARRY CORPORAL Son of William and Rosa Deems (Dill); born May 7, 1894, Kendallville, Noble County, Ind. Family moved to Muncie in 1897. Machinist. Entered service June 15, 1918, Indian- apolis Chamber of Commerce School. Sent to Camp Sheridan, Ala .; assigned to duty as Automobile Mechanic, 1st Casual Detachment. Drowned September 24, 1918, Montgomery, Ala. Buried in Beech Grove Cemetery, Muncie, Ind.

Son of Emmett E. and Elizabeth DeWitt; born December 18, 1895, Chicago, Ill. Later moved to Muncie, Ind., where he became advertising manager for the Muncie Star. Entered service November 14, 1917, in radio department of the U.S. Naval Reserves, Great Lakes Training Station, Chicago, Ill. Assigned to duty as third class radio operator. Sent to Har- vard University for training; then to New London, Conn. Drowned December 6, 1918, off Tangier, Morocco.


DILLON, FRANK PRIVATE


Son of John F. and Electa Neal Dillon; born July 6, 1889, Lawrence County, Ohio. Moved to Albany, Delaware County, Ind. in 1916. Mechanic. Entered service September 20, 1917, Muncie, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Overseas in May, 1918; assigned to Company K, 130th Infantry. Fought at Bois-de-cote, and Lemount. Died of pneumonia December 8, 1918, Commercy, France. Buried, Commercy, France. Sur- vived by widow, Marie Pursley Dillon, Muncie, Ind.


ELLIOTT, EDWARD WILLIAM - 1ST LIEUTENANT Son of Samuel A. and Myrtle Elliott; born September 9, 1895, Wapakoneta, Ohio. Living in Muncie, Ind., when he entered First Officers Training Camp, Ft. Harrison, Ind., May 15, 1917. Commissioned 1st Lieutenant. Assigned to 27th Aero Squadron. Transferred to Toronto, Canada; then to Camp Taliaferro, Tex. Overseas in March, 1918. Killed in an air battle, Chateau-Thierry, France, July 2, 1918. Survived by widow, Reba Thorpe Elliott, Muncie, Ind.


FEELY, JOSEPH REILLY PRIVATE -


Son of Thomas W. and Julia Dickerson Feely; born May 28, 1882, Daleville, Delaware County, Ind. Electrician. Enlisted in Canadian Army December 12, 1917, Indianapolis, Ind. Trained at East End Barracks, Hamilton, Ontario. Assigned to Company C, 20th Canadian Expeditionary Forces. Over- seas in March, 1918. Killed in action October 10, 1918, on Scheldt Canal. Survived by two children Gladys Irene, and Josephine Rudy Feely. Widow, Mary Collins Feely, deceased.


FORTNER, HERBERT DAVID PRIVATE


Son of Donald and Mary Fortner; born July 27, 1891, near Lexington, Ky. When only a few years of age, moved with parents to Muncie, Ind. Machinist. Entered service July 23, 1918. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky .; assigned to 299th Aero Squadron; sent to the Carnegie Technical Institute, Pittsburg, Pa. Died of influenza October 18, 1918, Pittsburg, Pa. · Buried in Beech Grove Cemetery, Muncie, Ind.
