Honorably discharged because of physical disability. Re- enlisted September 10, 1917, Parkersburg, W. Va. Sent to Camp Greene, N. C. Overseas in April, 1918; attached to 5th Division. Killed in action September 16, 1918, battle of St. Mihiel. Body to be returned to U.S., and buried in Soldier's Plot, City Cemetery, Muncie, Ind.


KIDD, VERNON MONROE


1ST LIEUTENANT, BRITISH ROYAL FLYING CORPS Son of Albert and Fannie Frazier Kidd; born December 6, 1896, Waco, Mo. Moved with parents to Yorktown, Delware County, Ind. in 1902. Electrician. After being rejected several times by U.S. recruiting officers, he enlisted in Canadian Flying Corps, in September, 1917. Sailed for England early in 1918. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Killed in airplane accident August 30, 1918, while teaching a recruit how to pilot his machine.

Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army April 16, 1917, Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Sent to Douglas, Ariz .; assigned to Company I, 18th Infantry. Overseas with the 1st Division in June, 1917. Served in Sommerville Sector. Died July 18, 1918, in Field Hospital No. 12 from wounds received in battle of Soissons. Buried in Grave 22, of American plot, French Cemetery, Commune of Pierrefonds, France.


ELLIS, BENJAMIN J. - HOSPITAL APPRENTICE, U.S.N.


Son of Ellsworth E. and Sophia W. Ellis; born March 9, 1897, Elon, Orange County, Ind. Later moved to Cuzco, Dubois County, Ind. Teacher. Entered U.S. Navy May 31, 1918; sent to Great Lakes Training Station, Chicago, Ill .; assigned to Company C-4, 6th Regiment, Camp Perry, Reserve Hospital Forces. Died of pneumonia September 24, 1918, Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Buried near Union Valley Church, Cuzco, Dubois County, Ind.


HARMEYER, FREDERICK WILLIAM AUGUST CORPORAL Son of Louis and Amelia Rebber Harmeyer; born September 5, 1890, Holland, Dubois County, Ind. Tailor. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army in April, 1917, in North Dakota. Assigned to Company H, 26th Infantry. Promoted to Corporal. Went overseas, and was reported missing in action July 19, 1918. Later reported killed in action on the same date. Buried "in France."

HAWKINS, CLARENCE - CORPORAL Son of Thomas and Melvina Hawkins; born August 17, 1898, Huntingburg, Dubois County, Ind. Miner. Enliste in U.S. Regular Army November 13, 1916, Columbus Barrack ;. Ohio. Assigned to Company C, 28th Infantry. Went over- seas with the First Division in June, 1917. Killed by bursting shell May 30, 1918, in Battle of Cantigny, when going over the top for the fourth time. Buried on battlefield where he fell. Recommended for citation for heroic conduct.


HUFF, HERBERT MONROE PRIVATE


Son of Albert and Emma Carter Huff; born January 15, 1896, near Birdseye, Dubois County, Ind. Farm laborer. Called into service June 25, 1918, Jasper, Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio. Transferred to Camp Mills, N. Y .; assigned to Company G, 335th Infantry. Went overseas in September. 1918. Stricken with influenza, he was taken to Red Cross Military Hospital No. 4, Mossley Hill, Liverpool, where he died of pneumonia November 3, 1918. Buried in Everton Cemetery, Liverpool, England.


HUMBERT, JOSEPH FRANK PRIVATE


Son of Henry and Mary Schepers Humbert (deceased); born June 3, 1893, Celestine, Dubois County, Ind. Farm laborer. Entered service June 23, 1918, and was sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Assigned to Battery E, 26th Field Artillery. Transferred to Camp McClellan, Ala .; assigned to 55th Com- pany, 9th Regiment. Died of influenza March 18, 1919, in Government Hospital, West Baden, Ind. Buried in S Raphaels Catholic Cemetery, Dubois, Ind.

Son of Fred W. and Sophia Lammers Hunefeld; born October 17, 1889, Holland, Dubois County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service August 25, 1918, Jasper, Ind. Sent to Camp Custer, Mich .; assigned to Quartermaster's Department, 320th Aux- iliary Remount Depot. Died of pneumonia October 26, 1918, Camp Custer, Mich. Buried in Holland Cemetery, Dubois County, Ind.


JOHN, FRANK KASPER PRIVATE


Son of Kasper and Helena Gutzwieler John; born March 15, 1894, Jasper, Ind. Farmer. Called into service May 27, 1918, Maquoketa, Iowa. Sent to Camp Dodge, lowa; assigned to Machine Gun Company, 352nd Regiment, 88th Division. Sailed from Camp Mills August 16, 1918. Died of pneumonia October 13, 1918, in France. Buried near Hericourt, Aisne, in the American-French Cemetery. Body to be returned to his home in Dubois County, Ind., for final interment.

KRODEL, GEORGEĮLEO COOK Son of Herman (deceased) and Veronica Gerber Krodel; born December 18, 1889, Jasper, Ind. Proprietor of restaurant. Called into service September 4, 1918, Jasper, Ind. Sent to Camp Grant, Ill .; assigned to Company D, 5th Limited Service Regiment. Promoted to Cook. Died of influenza October 3, 1918, Camp Grant, Ill. Buried in Jasper, Ind. The first Jasper County soldier to give up his life. Survived by widow, Agnes Brady Krodel, and one son, LeRoy Krodel, Chicago, Ill.


LANGE, ROBERT JOHN PRIVATE


Son of John and Margaret Witte Lange; born August 4, 1895, Ferdinand, Dubois County, Ind. Farmer. Called into service September 19, 1917, Jasper, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky .; assigned to Company G, 335th Infantry. Transferred to Camp Sevier, S. C .; assigned to Company F, 120th Infantry, 30th Division. Embarked from Boston Harbor May 14, 1918. Wounded in action near Ypres, and died August 24, 1918, in hospital, Bergues Nord, France. Body returned to U.S., and buried in St. Ferdinand's Cemetery, Dubois County, Ind.


LEAGUE, GEORGE WILLIAM PRIVATE


Son of Charles S. and Jennie Pherson League; born Septem- ber 27, 1897, Greenwood, Johnson County, Ind. When a mere boy he was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Brown, Duff, Dubois County, Ind. Farmer. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army February 9, 1917, Huntingburg, Ind. Sent to Columbus Barracks, Ohio; assigned to Machine Gun Company, 16th Regiment. Transferred to El Paso, Tex. Overseas June 12, 1917. Participated in numerous battles. Killed in action at Soissons, sometime between July 19 and 24, 1918.
