COLVIN, NOBLE THOMAS PRIVATE Son of Albert M. and Mary Elizabeth Colvin; born July 8, 1885, Frankfort, Ky. Moved to Clark County, Ind., in 1894. Laborer. Entered service August 9, 1918, Jeffersonville, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Transferred to Camp Gordon, Ga .; assigned to 3rd Company, Development Battalion. While home attending the funeral of one of his brothers, he was stricken with influenza. Ordered to the Hospital, Camp Taylor, Ky., and died October 21, 1918. Buried in Walnut Ridge Cemetery, near Jeffersonville, Ind.

BROWN, WILLIAM PRIVATE


Son of Mr. and Mrs. Simpson Brown; born August 22, 1890, Jackson Township, Clay County, Ind. Employe of U. S. Navy Department, Washington, D. C. for six years. Prior to entering service had been in the employ of U. S. Agricultural Department, Portland, Ore., where he entered service June 28, 1918. Sent to Camp Meade, Md .; assigned to 8th Company, 2nd Training Battalion, 154th Depot Brigade. Died of influenza October 2, 1918, Camp Meade, Md. Buried in Lutheran Cemetery, Centerpoint, Clay County, Ind.


BUSSING, THOMAS L. - PRIVATE


Son of Clement and Margaret Bussing; born October 3, 1890, Effingham, Ill. Moved with parents to Terre Haute, Ind., in 1909, and in 1911 moved to Brazil, Ind. Entered service March 29, 1918, Brazil. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky .; assigned to 6th Company, 2nd Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Later assigned to Company A, 112th Infantry, and went overseas in May, 1918. Died August 29, 1918, from wounds received in battle of St. Mihiel.


CARPENTER, WALTER W. - PRIVATE Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Carpenter; (date of birth un- known). Called into service in August, 1917, Brazil, Ind., and was sent to Camp Taylor, Ky., with the first contingent of Clay County men. Transferred to Camp Pike, Ark .; assigned to Company C, 346th Infantry. Transferred to Company E, 47th Infantry and went overseas in May, 1918; attached to 4th Division. Killed in action August 10, 1918. (Place unknown)

COOKSEY, HARRY E. PRIVATE Son of George and Anna Cooksey; born May 4, 1895 near Brazil, Ind. Farmer. Entered service September 18, 1917, Greenville, Ill., and was sent to Camp Dodge, Ia. Assigned to Company F, 347th Infantry. Transferred to Camp Pike, Ark. Stricken with pneumonia, he died January 2, 1918, Camp Pike, Ark. Buried in Brazil, Ind.


DAUGHERTY, JOHN PRIVATE Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Daugherty; born August 2, 1893, Carbon, Clay County, Ind. Entered service June 26, 1918, Brazil, Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned to 7th Company, 2nd Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade. Embarked for overseas September 3, 1918; assigned to Company K, 334th Infantry. Died of pneumonia October 22, 1918. (Place unknown).

DAY, LEWIS AQUILLA PRIVATE


Son of Finley Aquilla (deceased) and Emma Rice Day; born October 3, 1893, Bowling Green, Clay County, Ind. In May, 1916 he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces, 3rd Company, 4th Battalion. Went overseas in December, 1916; trained at Camp Saree, England until April, 1917. Killed in action September 30, 1917, following the battle of Cambrai. Buried in Drummond British Cemetery, north of Denain, France, Plot 3, Row B, Grave 2.


DIERDORF, FRED WALTER PRIVATE


Son of William and Caroline Dierdorf; born February 7, 1892, Centerpoint, Clay County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service September 20, 1917, Brazil, Ind. ยท Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky .; assigned to Company L, 152nd Infantry. Transferred to Camp Shelby, Miss .; went overseas in June, 1918; assigned to Company H, 166th Infantry, Fort-second (Rainbow) Division. Died August 1, 1918, from wounds received in the battle of Seringes-et-Nesles.


DUNCAN, JAMES M. 1ST LIEUTENANT Son of John Mason and Glenn Phillips Duncan; born January 28, 1893, Cloverland, Clay County, Ind. Served with the 1st Illinois Cavalry on the Mexican Border in 1916. Entered First Officers Training Camp, Ft. Sheridan, Ill., in May, 1917. Received Lieutenant's Commission and went overseas in Sep- tember, 1917; assigned to Company B, 9th Infantry. Killed in action July 18, 1918, Soissons. The only commissioned officer from Clay County killed in action on foreign battlefields.


FROST, ELVIN A. PRIVATE


Son of M. L. and Esther E. Frost; born February 6, 1895, Harmony, Clay County, Ind. Lived in Clay County until 1916, when he moved with his parents to Clearmont, Wyo. to settle on a homestead claim. Enlisted in Oregon National Guard April 9, 1917, Portland, Ore. Went overseas, and was transferred to Company A, 1st Brigade, Machine Gun Bat- talion, 1st Division. Killed in action June 7, 1918 near Can- tigny, France. Cited (posthumously) for gallantry in action and meritorious services.


GRIFFY, CLAUDE M. PRIVATE


Son of John and Mattie Maxwell Griffy; born February 21, 1897, Brazil, Ind. Employe of Pennsylvania Railroad. En- listed in U.S. Regular Army April 15, 1917, and was sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Embarked for overseas, June 14, 1917; attached to Company A, 18th Infantry, 1st Division. Participated in battles of Soissons, Chateau-Thierry, Metz, and Verdun. Killed in action November 6, 1918, Argonne Forest.

GRIGSBY, M. OSCAR - SERGEANT


Son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Grigsby; born December 7, 1894, near Otter Creek, Van Buren Township, Clay County, Ind. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army May 3, 1915, and served with Company B, 14th Infantry. After completing his first enlist- ment, he re-enlisted October 21, 1918, and was sent to Camp Eustis, Va. While home on furlough he contracted pneu- monia and died February 10, 1919. Buried in Benwood Cemetery, near his home.


HARRIS, ROBERT BARNETT PRIVATE Son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Harris; born June 6, 1899 Brazil, Ind. Enlisted in Company H, Indiana National Guard, 1st Regiment (Company H, 151st Infantry) April 19, 1917, Terre Haute, Ind. Sent to Camp Shelby, Miss. Went over- seas in October 1918; assigned to Company B, 113th Ammuni- tion Train, 38th Division. Died of heart trouble November 15, 1918, British Hospital No. 2, Le Havre, France.
