KURTZ, HERSCHELL HALL PRIVATE, S.A.T.C. Son of Edwin Morton and Mary Florence Kurtz; born April 25, 1897, North Salem, Hendricks County, Ind. Farmer. Enlisted in Student Army Training Corps September 16, 1918, Colorado Springs, Colo. He was immediately taken to the hospital with a severe cold, which developed into influenza, and died October 2, 1918, at that place. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Peacock; born January 31, 1898, Mocksville, N. C. Moved to Henry County, Ind., in early life. Mechanic. Entered service May 23, 1918, and sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Overseas in July, 1918; assigned to Company F, Headquarters Company, Medical Department. Died of pneumonia January 28, 1919, just before sailing for U.S. Body returned to U.S. in November, 1920, and buried in Newcastle, Ind. Survived by widow, Voleta Peacock, and two sons, Samuel B. and Charles H. Peacock.


PENCE, EUGENE RUNYAN SEAMAN, 2ND CLASS Son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Pence; born June 4, 1901, New- castle, Ind. Student. Enlisted in U.S. Navy July 22, 1918, Indianapolis, Ind. Sent to U.S. Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, Ill .; assigned to duty as Apprentice Seaman, U.S.N.R.F. Promoted to 2nd Class Seaman. Died of influenza September 25, 1918, Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Ill. Buried in Newcastle, Ind.


ROSS, CARL FOURQUREAN - PRIVATE Son of Amos and Williamanna Fourqurean Ross; born November 13, 1882, Delaware County, Ind. Employed as an ironworker in Newcastle, when he was called into service March 23, 1918. Sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo .; then to Washington, D. C .; assigned to Company H, 35th Engineers. Overseas in June, 1918. Killed accidentally by train February 8, 1919, Bordeaux, France, just before he was to sail for home. Buried in Cemetery of U.S. Army Hospital, Bordeaux, France.


SMITH, HOWARD REA 2ND LIEUTENANT Son of Edward and Mary Bonslog Smith; born January 9, 1888, Newcastle, Ind. Educated in University of Michigan. Enlisted in aviation service of U.S. Army in June, 1917, Cham- paign, Ill. Trained in Canada, and Kelly Field, Tex. Com- missioned 2nd Lieutenant. Sailed for England in January, 1918, with 28th Aero Squadron. Met death in accident May 27, 1918, Gervain, Scotland. Body returned to U.S., and buried in South Mound Cemetery, Newcastle, Ind. American Legion Post, Newcastle, Ind., named in his honor.


THOMAS, VERL THOMAS - - PRIVATE, U.S.M.C.


Son of Sylvester and Joanna Thomas; born February 19, 1897, New Lisbon, Henry County, Ind. Farmer. Enlisted in U.S. Marine Corps June 19, 1917, Newcastle, Ind. Sent to Quantico, Va .; assigned to 18th Company, 5th Regiment. Went overseas; killed in action June 12, 1918, Belleau Woods, France. Buried in American Cemetery, Belleau Woods, France. Awarded Croix de Guerre, (posthumously) for bravery in action. Received special mention in order from General Petain, and two American generals.

Son of David T. and Hattie Buck Wilson; born June 4, 1895, Tipton, Ind. Moved to Henry County in 1917. Farmer. Entered service June 24, 1918, Tipton, Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned to Company G, 333rd Infantry. Went overseas in September, 1918; assigned to Machine Gun Com- pany, 91st Division. Died November 11, 1918, from wounds received in action. Buried in American Military Cemetery, No. 1252, Grave 61, Waereghem, West Flanders.

ALLISON, ROY FRANK SERGEANT Son of Frank L. and Cora Winkler Allison; born November 23, 1899, Ogden, Henry County, Ind. Moved to Kokomo, Ind., in 1904. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army December 11, 1915, and was sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Assigned to Company K, 34th Infantry. Served on the Mexican Border in 1916. Went overseas in August, 1918, and was killed in action October 22, 1918. Survived by widow, Alberta Anderberg Allison.


BLANSETT, WILLIAM JOHNSON - CORPORAL Son of Mr. and Mrs. William Blansett; born in 1894 (exact date not known), Jasper, Tenn. Employed in Kokomo, Ind. at time of enlistment in U.S. Regular Army, early in the year, 1917. Sent to Ft. Thomas, Ky .; assigned to aviation branch of service, and sent to Kelly Field, Tex. Transferred to Wilbur Wright Field, Ohio. Later took a special course in gunnery. Died of influenza October 6, 1918, Dayton, Ohio. Buried in Jasper, Tenn.

Son of Albert F. and Mary A. Bohn; born January 23, 1893, Miami County, Ind. Living in Kokomo, Ind. at time he was called into service, September 4, 1918. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky .; assigned to 15th Company, 4th Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Died of pneumonia October 11, 1918, Base Hospital, Camp Taylor, Ky. Buried in Rankin Cemetery, Bunker Hill, Ind. Survived by widow, Pearl Bohn.


BOLES, HENRY P. - PRIVATE Son of John A. and Susie Boles; born December 21, 1876, West Lima, Wis. When quite young moved with parents to Kokomo, Ind. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army September 13, 1899, and served several years. Re-enlisted January 22, 1914, Jefferson Barracks, Mo .; assigned to Company D, 1st Infantry; later transferred to Supply Company, 1st Field Artillery. Died of pneumonia March 6, 1918, Ft. Sill, Okla. Buried in Kokomo, Ind.
