Moved with parents to Madison, Ind. shortly before declaration of war against Germany. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army November 14, 1916. Sent to Ft. Ringgold, Tex. Overseas in June, 1917; assigned to Company B, 28th Infantry, 1st Division. Killed in action July 21, 1918, Soisson, France.

Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army during the Spanish American War; decorated for bravery for carrying James Creelman, war correspondent, off the battlefield under fire, after Creelman had been wounded. Assigned to Quartermaster's Department, West Point, N. Y. during World War. Accidentally drowned at West Point, October 3, 1918. Buried in Fairview Cemetery, Switzerland County, Ind.
STOOPS, HOWARD - PRIVATE, S.A.T.C. Son of Samuel and Ruth Stoops; born August 15, 1896, near Florence, Switzerland County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service October 15, 1918, Vevay, Ind. Sent to Winona Lake, Ind. for vocational training; assigned to Student Army Training Corps. Stricken with influenza, he died October 31, 1918, at Winona Lake. Buried in Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Ind.
WILLIAMSON, W. HAMPTON PRIVATE Son of Ephraim and Laura Williamson; born July 12, 1892, near Patriot, Switzerland County, Ind. Engineer. Entered service October 6, 1917, Vevay, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Assigned to the 12th Service Company, Signal Corps, Meteorological Section, and sent to Cincinnati, Ohio. Over- seas in July, 1918. Gassed, while making an observation tour of the Argonne Sector in November, 1918; contracted pneu- monia, and died November 27, 1918. The American Legion Post, Patriot, Ind., named in his honor.
WOLF, ELBERT PRIVATE Son of John and Emma J. Wolf; born September 7, 1895, near Brooksburg, Ind. Farmer. Entered service August 28, 1918, Vevay. Sent to Camp Custer, Mich .; assigned to 16th Company, 4th Training Battalion, 160th Depot Brigade. Transferred to Company F, 10th Infantry. Died of pneumonia October 19, 1918, Camp Custer. Buried near Moorefield, Switzerland County, Ind. Survived by widow, Mabel Gray Wolf.
