Thomas, Ky. Sent to Ft. Brown, Tex .; assigned to Company M, 4th Infantry. Transferred to Camp Gettysburg, Pa .; then to Camp Greene, N. C. Sailed overseas May 3, 1918; 1918; assigned to headquarters Company, 59th Infantry, 4th Division. Died August 12, 1918, in Base Hospital, France, from wounds received in action. (Burial place not known).

Died of pneumonia October 20, 1918, Camp de Souge, near Bordeaux. Buried in Camp Cemetery No. 28, France

Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army May, 1917, Lafay- ette, Ind. Sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo .; assigned to Troop M, 21st Cavalry. Transferred to Camp Logan, Tex .; assigned to Battery F, 79th Field Artillery, 7th Division. Overseas August 18, 1918. Died of pneumonia September 17, 1918, Ploermel, France. Buried in American Cemetery, Grave No. 55, Camp Coctquidan, France.


NEWHOUSE, MORRIS BYRON PRIVATE Son of Albert G. and Lena Newhouse; born July 24, 1892, Lawrence, Marion County, Ind. Section hand. Entered service July 29, 1918, Nevada, Iowa. Sent to Camp Forrest, Ga. Transferred from there to Camp Devens, Mass. Assigned to Company D, 212th Engineers. Died of pneumonia Sep- tember 27, 1918, Camp Devens. Buried in Anderson Cemetery near Irvington, Marion County, Ind.


NOLEN, JOHN JORDAN - - AVIATOR Son of James and Anna Nolen born March 11, 1892, Cin- cinnati, Ohio. Moved to Indianapolis, Ind. in early life. Sec- retary, National Home Realty Company. Enlisted in Signal Corps, Aviation Service August 28, 1917, Dayton, Ohio. Train- ed at Camp Fairfield, Ohio; assigned to 19th Aero Squadron. Died September 18, 1917, from wounds received in automobile accident, Camp Fairfield, Dayton, Ohio. Buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis.

Educated in Butler College, and John Herron Art Institute. Student. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army May 4, 1917, In- dianapolis. Trained at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., Ft. Ethan Allen, Vt., and Camp Shelby, Miss. Overseas in April, 1918; assigned to Headquarters Company, 76th Field Artillery. Killed in action July 30, 1918, near Roncheres, France. Buried, south of Roncheres. Awarded Distinguished Service Cross for bravery in action.


O'BRIEN, JAMES FRANCIS SERGEANT-MAJOR Son of Michael J. and Mary I. O'Brien (deceased); born Jan- uary 13, 1894, Indianapolis, Ind. Clerk. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army August 6, 1914, Indianapolis. Assigned to Headquarters Company, Coast Artillery Corps, Ft. Hamilton, N. Y. Sailed for France June 10, 1918. Gassed in Meuse- Argonne Offensive. Returned to U.S. as casualty. Died of tuberculosis April 24, 1919, in Hospital No. 8, Otisville, N. Y. Buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Indianapolis. Survived by widow, Dorothy O'Brien, Ft. Worth, Tex.

O'CONNOR, FRANCIS JAMES PRIVATE Son of Hugh and Julia Flynn O'Connor; born April 3, 1898, Cincinnati, Ohio. Came to Indianapolis in 1900. Machinist. Entered service in May, 1918, Detroit, Mich. Trained at Camp Custer, Mich. Went overseas October, 1917; assigned to duty as Sharpshooter. Killed in action July 19, 1918, Chateau-Thierry, France. Buried at Chateau-Thierry.


PANKEY, RICHARD MILTON PRIVATE


Son of Lewis J. and Mary Pankey; born February 25, 1895, Fulton County, Ky. Moved to Marion County, Ind. in 1917. Farmer. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army in 1912. Received honorable discharge, Vancouver Barracks, Wash., March 21, 1916. Re-enlisted at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. April 4, 1917. Sent to Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind .; assigned to Company E, 10th Infantry. Transferred to Nitro, Va., where he died of pneumonia April 12, 1918. Buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, Walter Valley, Ky.


PARRY, MAXWELL O. IST LIEUTENANT Son of D. M. and Hessie Maxwell Parry; born December 28, 1887, Indianapolis, Ind. Educated in Culver Military Acad- emy, Harvard, and Yale Universities. Real estate. Enlisted in U.S. Air Service July, 1917, Indianapolis, Ind. Trained at Columbus, Ohio, Ft. Worth, Tex., and Deseronto, Canada. Overseas in January, 1918. Served in Royal Flying Corps. Decorated by French and American Governments. Downed three German planes. Reported missing in action July 23, 1918. Grave later loacated near Vaudeville, France. Ameri- can Legion Post No. 100, Indianapolis, named the Parry-Steph- enson Post. (See p. 423.)
