Trained at San Diego, Cal .; Kelly Field, Tex .; Post Field, Okla .; and Emerson Field, S. C. Appointed Command- ing Officer of 276th Aero Squadron. Killed in airplane accident January 7, 1919 near Fayetteville, N. C. Buried in Greenhill Cemetery, Bedford, Ind. "Pope Field," N. C., is named in honor of Lieutenant Pope.

Son of Mr. and Mrs. Josephus Smith; born November 4, 1896, Peerless, Lawrence County, Ind. Laborer. Entered service August 27, 1918, Bedford, Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned to 24th Company, 6th Training Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade. Died of pneumonia October 7, 1918, Camp Sherman, Ohio. Buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Peerless, Lawrence County, Ind.


SPOONMORE, ELMER PRIVATE Son of William and Elizabeth Spoonmore (deceased); born October 4, 1895, Trinity Springs, Martin County, Ind. Moved when quite young to Lawrence County, Ind. Farmer. At- tended Normal School, Danville, Ind. Entered service April 26, 1918, Bedford, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Overseas in July, 1918; assigned to Company E, 315th Engineers, 90th Division. Died October 31, 1918, from wounds received in action. Buried in American Cemetery, Souilly, Meuse, France, Grave No. 22, Sec. D.


TUCKER, CHESTER CLEMENT - FIREMAN, 2ND CLASS Son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Tucker; born January 17, 1897, Edgar County, Ill. Moved to Lawrence County, Ind. (Date not known). Farmer. Entered U.S. Navy in July, 1918. Sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Chicago, Ill. Later stationed on the Chattanooga. Died of diphtheria March 20, 1919, in Brooklyn Naval Hospital, N. Y. Buried in Harrodsburg Cemetery, Monroe County, Ind.

Son of John H. and Susan C. Anderson; born February 28, 1887, Windfall, Tipton County, Ind. Moved to Elwood, Madison County, in 1892. Carpenter. Entered service March 28, 1918, Elwood, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky .; assigned to 12th Company, 3rd Training Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Transferred to Company B, 111th Infantry, 28th Division. Went overseas in May, 1918. Killed in action July 18, 1918. (Place unknown).

Died October 10, 1918 in France. from wounds received in action. (Place of burial unknown).

Son of Randolph S. and Emma Williams Baker (deceased); born April 19, 1890, Williamsburg, Va. Came to Madison County, Ind. in 1912. Farmer. Entered service August 5, 1917, Circleville, Ohio. Sent to Camp Perry, Ohio; then to Camp Mills, N. Y. Assigned to Company F, 166th Infantry, 42nd (Rainbow) Division, 83rd Brigade. Overseas in October, 1917. Killed in action July 29, 1918. Buried in American Cemetery, Seringes-et-Nesles, Aisne, France.


BARTHOLOMEW, BENJAMIN OLIVER - PRIVATE - Son of Stephen and Mary E. Bartholomew; born April 22, 1899, Lapel, Madison County, Ind. Laborer. Enlisted in Indiana National Guard, Company M, 4th Infantry, Anderson, Ind., July 2, 1917. Sent to Camp Shelby, Miss. Sailed for France June 12, 1918; assigned to Company C, 1st Field Signal Battalion. Died November 7, 1918 in Base Hospital No. 8, France. Body returned to U.S., and buried near his home. The American Legion Post, Lapel, Ind., named in his honor.


BERRY, LOTTIE MAY RED CROSS NURSE Daughter of William R. (deceased) and Ida Berry (Miller); born October 27, 1888, Dunreith, Henry County, Ind. Moved to Madison County in 1890. Graduated from Deaconess Hos- pital, Indianapolis in 1913. Enlisted in Medical Corps June, 1917, Indianapolis; assigned to Base Hospital No. 32. Re- mained with this unit until her death December 30, 1917 of pneumonia, in Naval Hospital No. 1, France. Buried in Brest, France. Reported as the first American Red Cross Nurse to give her life on foreign soil.
