Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky .; assigned to 10th Vompany, 3rd Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Trans- ferred to Camp Upton, N. Y .; assigned to Company E, 112th Infantry, 28th Division. Embarked May 7, 1918. Killed July 21, 1918, in the battle of Chateau-Thierry. Buried in French Military Cemetery, Aisne, France.
PERSONETTE, HUGH WESSEL - APPRENTICE SEAMAN Son of Fred and Lillian Personette; born July 27, 1900, Greenfield, Hancock County, Ind. Moved to Wayne County in 1909. Laborer. Entered service July 31, 1918, Indian- apolis, Ind. Sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Ill., where he contracted influenza and died September 25, 1918. Buried, Greenfield, Hancock County, Ind.
PHILLIPS, OLIVER P. - SERGEANT
Son of Perry and Martha Phillips; born August 8, 1891, Whitesboro, Tex. Moved to Richmond, Ind. in 1906. Em- ploye Starr Piano Company. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army April 24, 1917, Richmond, Ind. Sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo .; transferred to Ft. Monroe, Va .; assigned to Battery F, 74th Artillery, Coast Artillery Corps. Embarked September 23, 1918. Contracted pneumonia while on board transport, and died October 1, 1918. Given military funeral and buried at sea.
POWELL, ALSON SERGEANT Son of Ty and Louise Powell; born April 15, 1894, Estill County, Ky. Moved to Wayne County, Ind. in 1913. Car- penter. Enlisted in Ohio National Guard July 12, 1917, Cincinnati, Ohio. Trained at Columbus Barracks, Ohio, EI Paso, Tex .; Camp Sherman, Ohio; and Camp Lee, Va. Assigned to Company E, 148th Infantry, 37th Division. Embarked June 22, 1918. Killed in action October 31, 1918, Elsene. Belgium. Buried where he fell. Cited for bravery under fire.
RAY, HARRY MORTON - CORPORAL Son of Frank and Alice Ray; born October 21, 1888, Rich- mond, Ind. Coremaker. Entered service September 21, 1917, Richmond, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky .; transferred to Camp Forrest, Ga. Embarked April 9, 1918; assigned to Com- pany H, 6th Infantry, 5th Division. Killed in action October 14, 1918, near Romagne. Buried in Argonne-American Ceme- tery, Romagne, France. Cited for bravery in action. Sur- vived by widow, Mary B. Ray, Richmond, Ind. American Legion Post, Richmond, Ind., named in his honor.

Son of John B. and Ella Saunders; born June 16, 1893, Richmond, Wayne County, Ind. Electrician. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army May 16, 1917, Indianapolis, Ind. Sent to Camp Baker, Tex .; assigned to Company B, 8th Mounted Engineers. Transferred to Ft. Bliss, Tex., where he died of pneumonia May 24, 1918. Buried in Earlham Cemetery, Richmond, Ind.

Son of Henry and Ella Sharp; born November 29, 1893, East Germantown, Wayne County, Ind. Railroad employe. Enlisted in Company M, 4th Infantry, Indiana National Guard, August 12, 1917, Anderson, Ind. Sent to Camp Shelby, Miss .; assigned to Company C, 139th Machine Gun Battalion; then to Replacement Draft. Went overseas June 12, 1918. Assigned to Company A, 6th Engineers. Killed in action October 19, 1918. Buried in Argonne-American Cemetery, Romagne, France.
SHEFFER, CHELCIE OREN - PRIVATE Son of Amos C. and Luella Sheffer; born November 24, 1897, Wayne County, Ind. Assembler at Wayne Works. Entered service June 15, 1918, Indianapolis, Ind. Sent to Ft. Benja- min Harrison, Ind .; transferred to Camp Hancock, Ga .; assigned to 13th Company, Development Group. Contracted broncho- pneumonia and died in base hospital, Camp Hancock, January 7, 1919. Buried in Earlham Cemetery, Richmond, Ind.

Drowned when the Otranto was torpedoed by a German submarine two miles off the Scottish Coast. Buried in Kilchoman Cemetery, Kilcho- man, Islay, Argyll, Scotland.
