4. GREENFIELD [6] PERRIN, son of Asa [5], b. Nov. 11, 1763, Woodstock, Conn .; d. June 2, 1854, Roy .; m. June 4, 1792, Northfield, Sally, dau. William and Tamasin (Cady) Ashcraft, b. Dec. 3, 1775, Woodstock, Conn .; d. June 18, 1842, Northfield. In 1786 Greenfield bought of Daniel Tullar 7 T. P., which has remained in the hands of his descendants until the present time, a period of 125 years. It is now owned by Mrs. Ellen I. (Perrin) Green. He brought his bride and her outfit on horseback from Northfield. Their twelve children were evenly divided between sons and daughters. A cut of Mr. Perrin in his old age is found in the group of the Perrin family. He had a strong nature, proof against all ordinary temptations and trials of life. He and other members of his family are buried in Perrin lot, No. 1, on the Taggart farm.

JOEL NELSON [4] PHELPS (Alexander Steele [3], Alex. [2], Capt. Bissell [1]), b. Sep. 8, 1845, Waitsfield; m. Feb. 6, 1879, W. Hartford, Alice Phinette, dau. Levi and Mary Ransom (Perry) Hazen, b. Aug. 25, 1854, Pomfret. Mr. Phelps rem. from Sharon to Roy. in 1876, and bought the Alonzo Bur- gess farm where Adrian Hatch had lived. He sold this and pur- chased the Lewis Skinner place, which he sold in 1910, and moved to Roy. village into the Jacob Collamer house. He res. twenty years in Sharon. He was deacon of the Cong'l church there, and was elected deacon of the S. Roy. Cong'l church in 1909. He was deeply interested in the establishment of a graded school at S. Royalton, and worked for its interests. Mrs. Phelps is open-handed and hearted. When interviewed for data, she was found feeding a tramp on the fat of the land.

Sep. 24, 1754, Pris- cilla Shepard, b. 1734; d. Nov. 10, 1827, Roy. According to family traditions Nathaniel came to Royalton in 1781. His first deed bears date of Feb. 6, 1783, when he bought M. 5 L. A., 140 acres of Nathan Morgan. Before 1800 he had deeded to Bestor and Isaac each 40 acres of this land, and to Willard, 30 acres. Isaac later had the larger part of the farm, and gave security for support of parents. The ages of the children are not all known.

Mar. 21, 1763, Pomfret, Conn .; d. May 13, 1835, Roy. Willard sold the 30 acres that he had of his father to Isaac, and in 1797 took from him M. 7 L. A., which he sold two years later to Amos Robinson, and may never have lived on it. On May 11, 1811, for $2,000 he purchased of Capt. Gilbert, then in Sharon, what has been known as the Pierce stand and farm of 85 acres, ex- cept the right to dam construction and mill privileges. He had already been living there. He deeded this back to Capt. Gil- bert in 1818, and secured three lots where the store and potash works of Flint had been, which he sold in 1822 to Amasa Dut- ton. He does not again seem to establish a home apart from his son Phineas.

Cem., where his parents and grandparents are buried. His connection with the mills, and his purchase of the Gilbert tavern in 1827 have been noticed. He used machinery for the weaving of fine woolen goods, and his output was of the best quality. He took a more active part in the affairs of the town than his forbears had done. He was selectman in 1835. He was very successful in business, and as early as 1821 he stood fourth in the size of his grand list. H. P. Allen for some years, and after the death of Mrs. Allen, they rem. to S. Roy. and bought the William Martin house, which they sold to John B. Durkee and erected a fine residence on a part of the Mrs. Hannah Wallace lot, after the old Benson house was burned. She left a legacy to the S. Roy. Cong'l Church. She was a woman of gentle manners and kindly heart, and was devotedly attached to her sister, who survived her.


viii. Ellen Augusta [9], b. Dec. 8, 1833; res. with her sisters, unm., until the death of Frances C. In 1909 she sold her home in S. Roy. to Mrs. Mary E. Clapp, and rem. to Roy. village with an old friend, Mrs. Robert Lyman. She has been much interested in the History of Royalton, and furnished the greater part of the family record of Nathaniel Pierce.


4. PHINEAS DANA [9] PIERCE, son of Phineas, b. Aug. 3, 1818, Roy .; d. Apr. 17, 1891, Roy .; m. Nov. 29, 1842, Eleanor D., dau. Ambrose and Dolly (Follansbee) Kibbee, b. Feb. 13, 1823, E. Randolph; d. Dec. 29, 1907, Portland, Conn. Phineas D. lived on the home place, and well sustained the high reputation of his father. He was one of the directors of the Roy. Nat. Bank, and was a trusted officer of the town, being selectman in 1869-70. His family was connected with the S. Roy. Cong'l church, and his wife was a faithful teacher in the S. S. She possessed a charming personality, which won her many friends, and her true-heartedness retained them. Her daughters were valuable acquisitions to S. Royalton society, not alone in manners, but in the best qualities of mind and heart.

1. JEDEDIAH PIERCE, parentage not known, b. Feb., 1739, Plainfield, Conn .; d. Dec. 31, 1826; m. Susannah Eaton, b. Aug. 24, 1744. Mr. Pierce settled on 19 Dutch, which he bought in September, 1787. Two years later he sold a part of it to his son Joseph, and in 1799 he sold the rest of it to John Root, and bought 100 acres in 53 T. P. He sold one-half of this to Joseph in 1801. He was listed until after 1821. The lists are lost between that date and 1858, so that it cannot be said whether he died here or not. It is a tradition in the family

He was active in edu- cational matters, and promoted the graded school system in Rochester; served as town representative and state senator.

Mar. 20, 1873, Roy .; both bur. Havens Cem .; m. (2) Apr. 25 or 27, 1874, Mrs. Hannah (Jewett) Ashley, dau. Jonathan and Abigail (Bar- low) Jewett of Pittsfield, and wid. of James Madison Ashley, b. 1820. Mr. Pierce was a farmer and carpenter and joiner ; lived in different parts of the town, in 30 Dutch a part of the time; spent his last days with his son Henry.
